Students in Arroyo Grande will march Tuesday in support of teachers in the Lucia Mar Unified School District.

Members of the Lucia Mar Unified Teachers Association are in an ongoing contract dispute with the school district. They are asking for a 10 percent salary increase, but the district says it has offered them a two percent increase.

Organizers of Tuesday’s march tell KSBY News that nearly 100 students, alumni, and parents are expected to take part. The march is set to start at the Arroyo Grande High School gym shortly after 4:00 Monday afternoon and end at the school district office where the Lucia Mar Unified School District Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 5:00 p.m.

The board will hold a public comment period before going into closed session to meet with labor negotiators.

The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on a proposal Tuesday that would expand the Bob Jones Trail.

The proposed 4.4 mile segment would expand the trail from the existing staging area of the Bob Jones Trail at Ontario Road to the Octagon Barn off South Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo. The expansion of the trail is part of a project aimed at connecting Avila Beach to San Luis Obispo.

The County Board of Supervisors will decide whether to approve the trail’s Final Environmental Impact Report.

The San Luis Obispo County Parks and Recreation Commission forwarded a recommendation on the project to the County Board of Supervisors in January.

KSBY Action News NBC 6

Emergency crews were called to a crash in the Santa Ynez Valley on Monday Evening.

It happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. at Highway 154 and Roblar Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, causing lanes in both directions of traffic to be shut down.

A helicopter was sent to the scene to transport at least one victim. Information on the extent of injuries was not immediately available.

The crash comes just two days after a head-on crash at the same intersection left seven people injured.

KSBY Action News NBC 6

New information tonight on last Friday’s deadly wrong-way crash on the Santa Maria River Bridge.

The California Highway Patrol has identified the people involved.

They say the driver of the wrong-way truck was 57-year-old William Dixon Jr. of Hastings, Nebraska.

Officers say he crashed head-on into a car driven by 71-year-old William Donald Cole of Nipomo.

Cole died, but his wife, Paulette, who was his passenger, was the sole survivor.

C.H.P. still does not know why Dixon drove the wrong way.

They told KSBY they don’t believe it’s suicide at this time.

C.H.P. is waiting on the results of a toxicology report to hopefully learn more.

Meanwhile, one Central Coast neighborhood is reeling after losing someone who several people told KSBY today, was a good man.

For Nipomo resident Torri Stewart, Friday started out like any other day.

For the last seven years, she lived right next door to William and Paulette Cole.

“I just kind of made a comment like, making your Costco trip?” said Steward. “And they shook their head. And that was the last time I saw them. Couldn’t ask for any better neighbors.”

Three days later, C.H.P. is still trying to re-trace the steps of everyone involved in the crash, to answer the question of why Dixon drove his pickup the wrong way down the 101 and into on-coming traffic.

“He’s not from the Santa Maria area,” said C.H.P. Sgt. Greg Klingenberg. “Certainly confusion could play a role in that. Combine that with some sort of medical condition or some sort of impairment related to alcohol or drugs, it’s all part of the equation. It’s all part of what we’re looking into at this point.”

Meanwhile, the feeling in Stewart’s Nipomo neighborhood can be summed up in one word.

“Devasted,” Stewart said. “(William) could fix anything. From a clock, to a car, he rebuilt his old truck in the garage. And so he was a super guy. His wife, I can’t say enough good about her. Or either one of them.”

C.H.P. still doesn’t know exactly where Dixon got on the freeway.

But they believe he used the Broadway exit.

It’s about a half mile away and closest to where the crash happened.

C.H.P. says it received lots of calls from people who say they saw the wrong way driver, in the days leading up to the crash.

But officers don’t know why he was in the area, or what led up to the crash.

If you have any information about the case, you’re asked to call Santa Maria C.H.P.
