GREAT SERVICE | SUPER LOW PRICED | RECOMMENED TO ALL

I Had to have a water service line replaced, because mine was broken and leaking water into my basement. I had 6 other plumbing contractors come out and look at it and there estimates ranged between 2350 and 4300. So i kept on with my search and came across mr. plumber check up on them they don’t single bad comment anywhere.

The plumbers from mr. plumber came out gave me a quote of 1225 and I agreed right there on the spot signed the contract they were to come out monday by 10 am they did not make it there until 11. I was not mad or did not say one word to them about it but them manager.

Editorial review from Citysearch

Please don’t use this plumber, Justin Macnealy, he has a record and has been in jail for fraud and passing bad checks (in 2012). Google his name, you will find out. He is totally undependable. His wife is on here is giving an excellent review for the business under the name of Nancy Darst, her real name is Jamie Macnealy. You have to write your checks to Jamie stating she is the “”owner”” of the business. He never tells you she is his wife. She is supposedly on disability, so she is ripping off the government if she owns a business. These people need to be reported.

Remove Kool Aid from Carpet

COIT’s Guide on How to Remove Kool Aid Stains from Carpet

With the hustle and bustle of daily life, we put our carpets through quite a bit these days. So what do you do when you encounter a tough to handle stain like Kool-Aid? Wondering how to get red stains out of carpet? Act quickly. Kool-Aid has the ability to stain your carpet; however, if you act fast, the stain doesn’t have to be permanent.

With COIT’s guide to removing Kool-Aid stains from carpet, you’ll have a few do-it-yourself methods to help you keep your carpet in tip top shape.

26 How to remove Kool-Aid stains from carpet

How to Remove Kool Aid Stains from Carpet – Method # 1

  1. Upon discovering the Kool-Aid stain, it’s important to act as quickly as possible before the stain sets into the carpet fibers. Use a few clean paper towels to soak up any Kool-Aid. Do your best to blot the Kool-Aid stain (instead of scrubbing).
  2. Take 1 cup of warm water and mix it with ½ teaspoon of mild liquid dishwashing detergent (dishwasher and laundry detergent may be a bit too strong, as they often leave residue on your carpet and contain fragrances).
  3. Apply this cleaning solution directly onto the Kool-Aid stain using a clean white cloth (using a white cloth will help you see how much of the Kool-Aid is being absorbed from the carpet). Start from the outside of the stain and work your way in, being careful not to spread the stain onto other areas of the carpet.
  4. If you can still see the Kool-Aid stain, mix 2 cups of water with 1 cup of white vinegar.
  5. Using this white vinegar solution and a clean white cloth, repeat steps 1 through 3.
  6. After applying the white vinegar to remove red Kool-Aid from carpet, if the stain is still visible, mix 1 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of ammonia.
  7. Apply this ammonia solution directly onto the remaining stain and blot from the outside in. There is a chance the ammonia may lighten the carpet slightly, so be sure to test the ammonia on a smaller area of carpet before applying a large amount.
  8. Once the Kool-Aid stain is no longer visible, apply cold water directly to the stain to rinse the carpet.
  9. Blot up any remaining moisture.

How to Remove Kool Aid Stains from Carpet – Method # 2

Another way to remove red kool-aid from carpet involves using a few different solutions. If you can purchase Scrubbing Bubbles from the store, this cleaning solution may help lighten and eventually remove the stain with a bit of pressure.

Upon discovering the Kool-Aid stain, apply a bit of club soda directly to the stain (enough to cover it completely). Blot with a clean towel until the stain lifts off the carpet. If any of the stain remains, try adding a bit of undiluted lemon juice to the area and blotting. Rinse with cold water to remove any remaining residue.

So the next time you need to know how to get red stains out of carpet (like Kool-Aid) try the above-mentioned techniques. If the stain is stubborn and refuses to disappear, give us a call at COIT Carpet Cleaning to get some professional assistance that will revive your carpet. Don’t forget to checkout our coupons!

Remember to always do a spot removal test on a portion of carpet or upholstery that is normally not visible. These are suggested treatments only and COIT can’t be held accountable for any damage sustained by use of the treatments in this spot removal guide.

Carpet Water Damage

This section of the carpetbuyershandbook.com examines flood damaged carpet, water intrusion, flood classification, carpet warranty, sanitary flooding, unsanitary flooding, black water, home owners insurance, carpet cushion (carpet padding), padding, flooding types, and carpeting restoration.

Carpet Water Damage

Water intrusion affecting carpet and other floor coverings is among the most difficult situations faced by a homeowner or building manager. There is no standard procedure for dealing with every flooding situation. Each crisis must be evaluated on a case by case basis. Every flooding situation will have its own distinguishing problems. There are a number of standard questions that must be addressed in evaluating the proper protocol for returning the carpet to its pre-flood status. The primary question that must be addressed is the type of flooding that has occurred, sanitary, unsanitary, or black water.

Sanitary Flooding

The carpet must be treated with a disinfectant following extraction of excess water. Most homeowners insist that the carpet should be replaced in all flooding situations but this is usually not necessary in the case of sanitary flooding. A few simple guidelines may be followed to insure the carpet can be returned to pre-flood conditions.

  1. Traffic on the wet carpet should be kept to a minimum until the carpet is completely dry. The latex that holds the primary and secondary backings together is weakened when wet. Excessive traffic on the carpet may cause delamination. The latex should regain most of its strength after drying.
  2. Action should be taken immediately to shut-off and control the source of the water. It may be necessary to punch small holes in the drywall to release any standing water that has accumulated within the walls. It is impractical to begin restoration efforts prior to identification and elimination of the water source.
  3. Quickly remove any furnishings that may stain or damage the carpet.
  4. Immediately contact a professional restoration technician to perform the work.
  5. Extraction of excess water should begin immediately and the carpet should be completely dry within 12 hours following intervention. Failure to follow these recommendations may allow for the development of several types of bacteria and fungi that may negatively affect human health. To reduce the possibility of this occurrence, the application of a disinfectant to the face fiber is recommended. Many of these treatments will destroy stain resist treatments.
  6. To expedite drying, the carpet should be removed from the tack strip and the carpet padding (carpet cushion) always should be discarded. Carpet should be elevated and fans should be utilized to speed drying time. In circumstances where high humidity may delay drying time, dehumidifiers should be secured to assist in drying out the environment.

Unsanitary Flooding

If the water can be identified as unsanitary, there are few safe options. Anytime the water intrusion is a result of water with some degree of contamination, the water source can be classified as unsanitary. Examples of unsanitary water intrusion include dishwasher overflows, toilet overflows with urine present, punctured water beds, or other water sources that may contain biopollutant contamination. It is recommended the carpet be discarded due to bacterial concerns. If the decision is made to restore the carpet, disinfectants must be used to protect human health. In situations associated with unsanitary water intrusion, the primary concern should be protecting public health. The classification of unsanitary water versus black water contamination is dependent upon time. Unsanitary water that is left untreated for significant periods can change from unsanitary to black.

In dealing with unsanitary water sources, you must always assume there is a significant threat to human health. Rubber gloves, boots, goggles, and other protective clothing should be used. Anyone with cuts or open sores should avoid contact with the flood waters.

Black Water

Black water can be described as any water that contains raw sewage. Sea water and any water that comes in contact with the ground may also be classified as black water. Black water is considered highly unsanitary. This type of flooding can produce serious health effects. When black water is involved in flooding situations the facility must be evacuated to protect public health. All floor covering materials must be discarded and other surfaces should be carefully evaluated. It is recommended that all porous surfaces are removed and discarded. The facility should be evacuated by inhabitants until the environment can be returned to pre-flood conditions. Worker safety precautions similar to those utilized in dealing with unsanitary water should be used for black water.

Carpet Warranty

Regardless of the flooding type, all carpet manufacturers typically void any existing warranty (see carpet warranty) that may have been in effect at the time of the flood. While many insurance companies insist that carpet performance is unaffected by flood damage, this is not always the case. The lamination strength of the synthetic latex is usually weakened by excessive moisture and may affect long term carpet performance.

Guidelines for Response to Clean Water Damage within 24-48 Hours to Prevent Mold Growth*

  • For non-valuable items, discard books and papers.
  • Photocopy valuable/important items, discard originals.
  • Freeze (in frost-free freezer or meat locker) or freeze-dry.

Carpet and backing – dry within 24-48 hours§

  • Remove water with water extraction vacuum.
  • Reduce ambient humidity levels with dehumidifier.
  • Accelerate drying process with fans.

Concrete or cinder block surfaces

  • Remove water with water extraction vacuum.
  • Accelerate drying process with dehumidifiers, fans, and/or heaters.

Hard surface, porous flooring§ (Linoleum, ceramic tile, vinyl)

  • Vacuum or damp wipe with water and mild detergent and allow to dry; scrub if necessary.
  • Check to make sure underflooring is dry; dry underflooring if necessary.

Non-porous, hard surfaces (Plastics, metals)

  • Vacuum or damp wipe with water and mild detergent and allow to dry; scrub if necessary.
  • Remove water with water extraction vacuum.
  • Accelerate drying process with dehumidifiers, fans, and/or heaters.
  • May be difficult to completely dry within 48 hours. If the piece is valuable, you may wish to consult a restoration/water damage professional who specializes in furniture.

Wallboard (Drywall and gypsum board)

  • May be dried in place if there is no obvious swelling and the seams are intact. If not, remove, discard, and replace.
  • Ventilate the wall cavity, if possible.
  • Follow laundering or cleaning instructions recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Remove moisture immediately and use dehumidifiers, gentle heat, and fans for drying. (Use caution when applying heat to hardwood floors.)
  • Treated or finished wood surfaces may be cleaned with mild detergent and clean water and allowed to dry.
  • Wet paneling should be pried away from wall for drying.

* If mold growth has occurred or materials have been wet for more than 48 hours, consult Table 2 guidelines. Even if materials are dried within 48 hours, mold growth may have occurred. Items may be tested by professionals if there is doubt. Note that mold growth will not always occur after 48 hours; this is only a guideline.

These guidelines are for damage caused by clean water. If you know or suspect that the water source is contaminated with sewage, or chemical or biological pollutants, then Personal Protective Equipment and containment are required by OSHA. An experienced professional should be consulted if you and/or your remediators do not have expertise remediating in contaminated water situations. Do not use fans before determining that the water is clean or sanitary.

† If a particular item(s) has high monetary or sentimental value, you may wish to consult a restoration/water damage specialist.

§ The subfloor under the carpet or other flooring material must also be cleaned and dried. See the appropriate section of this table for recommended actions depending on the composition of the subfloor.

Did you know?

Carpet water damage can be one of the frustrating occurrences for any homeowner. In most case, the insurance provider will choose to restore the flood damaged carpet, but the carpet manufacturer will void all carpet warranty following flood damage.

1) when is galvanized pipe used for gas lines. my supply line looks like galvanized but one of the branches looks like black iron. and how much pressure is in a natural gas line.

Re: gas pipe. black iron or galvinized

Some places it can be used anywhere, others require it outdoors, and still others do not allow it at all. So it just depends on where you are located.

Re: gas pipe. black iron or galvinized

Author: jimmy-o (CA)

There was a time when some jurisdictions did not allow galvanized because of the possibility of the zinc coating flaking off inside the pipe, and clogging orifices and valves. Most places do allow it now. Figure the drip legs take care of problems. Here it is required for pipe exposed to the weather, but prohibited undergroun. Some areas still allow black outside but require it to be painted.

In very rough terms, the pressure inside a residence is about 1/2 PSI.

Author: davefoc (CA)

The reason for Black Iron Pipe rather than Galv. is; Galvanized Pipe will flake and the flakes can plug your appliance burner. It is my understanding that Gas Piping Codes require the use of Black Iron Pipe.

I have never run down a definitive answer on this issue, but a few comments:

I have heard three different reasons why black pipe should be used instead of galvanized:
1. galvanized pipe produces flakes that jam gas orifices.
2. black pipe is cheaper
3. using different pipe for gas makes sure gas pipe won’t be used for water lines.

theory 1 is the most common, but according to quite a few internet sources it is false.

theory 2 is true but it is not significantly cheaper if one looks at the overall cost of the project.

theory 3 is from my dad and I have never heard it anyplace else.

As a practical observation using black pipe outside, especially near the ocean, seems like a really bad idea since it corrodes very quickly.

Apparently, codes vary from location to location on the issue, but I am not sure which of the various internet pontificaters on this issue are correct. Some codes seem to require galvanized pipe for gas and some seem to preclude it. The sign at Lowes yesterday said that galvanized pipe shouldn’t be used for gas lines.

So what exactly is the code situation with regard to iron pipe for gas and are there any valid technical reasons why not to use galvanized for gas?

Re: gas pipe. black iron or galvinized

Author: glennac (GA)

Not correct the IFGC in both the 2006 and 2012 Editions allow galvanized pipe to be used for natural gas.

In the commentary of the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC-2012) under Section 403.4.2 for steel and wrought-iron pipe it states:

Steel pipe must be Schedule 40 or heavier, must comply with one of the listed standards and can be black iron or galvanized. Contrary to popular belief, natural gas does not adversely react with the zinc coating on galvanized pipe .

Identical language is also used in the 2006 Edition in the Code and Commentary of the IFGC.

For Gas Pipe its better to use Black pipe but never use cut threaded pipe for piping connection as it is not safe. I have got this information from PCFSCT webiste that Cut threaded Pipes are now replaced with Rolled threading technology which is safe and Green as well as PCFSC give gurantee for no leakage no Rolled threaded Pipe nipples and good they are also good for enviorment.

Rolled threaded Pipe nipples is safe because of following reasons

-Perfect Mating Between Male Female Thread Increases the tightness between the threaded Pipe and fitting and hence no leakeage on Rolled threaded Pipe Nipple.

– 100% perfect thread teeth as Rolled thread is manufacture by rolling process so from the 1st Pipe Nipples till the manufacturing of last pipe nipples the profile of the pipe nipples and thread remains the same but if you see the cut thread they are manufacture by cut knife tool which det weak after sometime and hence not perfect threading.

– Excellent Rust-Resistance on Rolled Thread Pipe
Original hot-dip zinc coating of the galvanized pipe remains intact, and is not cut away as with lathe cut ones.

-The density of the rolled thread pipe is increased greatly and makes, at least, the “same thickness” as the original pipe itself, and forms an anti-oxidization layer of high metallic density against rusty.

– Pipe Material Not Cut Away Makes Thread Mechanical Connection Much Better

The mechanical properties of the pipe thread are greatly improved as no material is cut away and the weight per unit length of rolled thread pipe remains unchanged, and further more the metal density is increased.

It is also enviorment friendly becuase No metal waste scraps is from rolling thread, material saving; Production environment is clear and friendly;

INSTALLATION ON SITE IS More Safe;
Easy convenient for tightening;
50% – 70% saving of sealant and tapes;
A trial test of piping system 100% successful pass in 1st time;
No re-call work;
Over 50% efficiency up in installation;
Daily maintenance on thread connection of piping system zero

Sisters riding Verrückt with Caleb Schwab the day he died have reached a settlement

Two sisters injured on the Verrückt water slide the day an Olathe boy was killed have reached a settlement with the owners of Schlitterbahn water park.

Attorney Lynn Johnson, who represents the two women, said the amount of the settlement will not be disclosed.

“They feel good that it’s behind them and they feel good that there’s been an agreement to remove the Verrückt, to tear down the tower and remove all of the slide,” said Johnson.

Schlitterbahn announced in late November that after the investigation into Caleb’s death was complete that the slide would be demolished.

The sisters, who live in a small community near the Kansas-Nebraska state line, were in the raft with Caleb on Aug. 7. The women suffered serious facial injuries.

On the 168-foot, 17-story-drop Verrückt, riders would plunge down one slope, glide up and over another hump and then shoot down a final slope. It opened in 2014 amid publicity that attracted media from around the globe to Kansas City, Kan.

But an investigation by The Star in August described early warning signs about the ride. Even in the face of design and safety problems, Verrückt’s path to completion was all but assured, with almost no outside officials casting a critical eye on the project, The Star found.

Schlitterbahn’s tallest water slide is guided by energy, acceleration and the laws of physics.

Eric Adler, Kris Knowles and Neil Nakahodo The Kansas City Star

After Caleb’s death, several riders told The Star about difficulties while on the world’s tallest water slide. Several experienced their harnesses coming off and in two instances since mid-July, people said their raft went airborne.

One was reported about three weeks before Caleb’s death and the other on July 28.

The sisters’ attorney said they sent a letter to Schlitterbahn officials in the fall saying that they would not consider discussing a settlement unless the slide was removed and destroyed.

“We didn’t have mediation until there was an agreement to that,” Johnson said.

What happened that August day is personal for the two sisters and they continue to decline to speak publicly about it. The two were prepared, however, to testify if needed for the bill in the Kansas Legislature strengthening the law on amusement ride inspections, Johnson said. The bill passed easily — and was sent to the governor for his signature — and the sisters weren’t needed to testify.

“If they ever speak out, it would be in favor of even more safety-oriented policies and procedures for amusement parks, but especially water parks,” Johnson said.

Water hammer noise and the cures #jack #dish #plumbing, #water #hammer #noise #plumbing #pipes #

Water hammer

Water hammer refers to the banging noises which sometimes come from plumbing pipework, it’s normally one or a series of banging noises coming from the pipework usually when a tap or valve is turned off.

It is usually caused in high pressure (i.e. mains pressure) water systems either when a tap is turned off quickly, or by fast-acting valves on appliances, which suddenly stop the water moving through the pipes and sets up a shock wave through the water which causes the pipes to vibrate and shudder .

Water hammer will be made worse by having worn valves and pipework inadequately supported.

Not only is the noise annoying, but it can lead to damage to joints, so water hammer should be cured rather than tolerated.

Causes and cures of ‘water hammer’

There are four probable areas to look at for the cause of water hammer , and a number of possible cures – the appropriate cure will depend upon the actual cause and the installation. If the water hammer only started after some work was done on the plumbing system or a new appliance installed, start by looking at those areas; however, any change to a plumbing system may start water hammer in another area.

Probable sources of water hammer

  1. Inadequately secured pipework more likely to cause water hammer after new work has been done; if water hammer first occurs without new work having been done, check the other possible cures first.
  2. Ball and float valves.
  3. Washing machines and Dish washer.
  4. Worn stop valves.

Unsecured pipework

Mains plumbing pipework needs to be adequately clipped to the surface it runs along, so check along the pipework that it is tightly secured at no greater spacing than every 2 metres.

Don t forget the pipe runs under the floorboards and any boxed in pipework in fact, these are possibly more likely to have been left inadequately secured than visible pipes, so you may want to look at these first despite the additional work involved in lifting floorboards etc. Ensure that pipework is clipped, secured and supported at regular intervals using pipe clips of the appropriate size.

Ball /float valves

Water hammer can result from ripples inside open water tanks where the water level is controlled by a ball/float valve the ripples being caused by the inflow of water with the result that the valve float bobs up and down thus repeatedly opening and closing the valve. This repeated opening and closing of the valve sets up shock waves which reverberate along the pipework causing the water hammer ‘effect.

If the water tank is plastic, check that a metal reinforcing plate was fitted on the side of the tank when the float valve was installed (see illustration below) – this reduces the flexing of the tank.

Other than the above, ripples in the water will usually only cause problems if the ball/float valve is worn or if the valve has a low pressure valve nozzle fitted when the water supply is high pressure.

Ensure that the washers and diaphragms in ball/float valves are not worn and that the appropriate valve nozzle is fitted the latter shouldn’t be the problem if the water hammer started some time after the valve was fitted.

If checking and repairing the valves don t cure the problem, one solution may be to fit an equilibrium valve instead of the usual valve in the tank or cistern. An equilibrium valve uses the inlet water pressure to help close the valve, however they are not all that easy to purchase in the UK.

One way to dampen the movement of the float arm is to attach a small plastic yogurt pot to the float arm using a piece of fairly stiff stainless steel or galvanised wire. Suspend the carton from near the ball so that the top of it is just under the water level. The pot full of water should act as a damper to stop the arm bobbing about without interfering with the operation of the valve.

Fitting a Torbeck cistern valve (they are available as either bottom or side entry to suit most types of cisterns) is another possible cure, it will prevent ripples on the water surface so the valve will close cleanly.

Washing machines and Dish washer

The water supply to both of these machines will be controlled by electrically operated solenoid valves which stops the flow of water instantaneously, so possibly setting up the shock wave through the pipework to cause the water hammer however, in most cases the flexible hoses attaching the appliance to the water supply are flexible enough to absorb any shock in the pipework.

Stop valve

Stop valves (stopcocks) and taps can cause water hammer if they have loose gland packing and/or worn washer jumpers taps are actually unlikely to be a problem as they would be closed when the noise occurs.

However, stop valves will generally be open when the water hammer shock wave travels through the pipework and the shock wave could well rattle the valve handle and a loose jumper.

While it is possible to tighten the gland packing and replace a loose jumper, the easiest way to cure the problem is just a case of replacing stop valve.

When all else fails.

There are a number of Water Shock Arrestor on the market these are relatively simple devices which trap air within the water pipes so that the shock wave in the pipework is absorbed. The unit needs to be installed as close to the source of the problem as possible. Some arrestors include a valve where a tyre pump can be connected to add air as necessary. Water Shock Arrestors are not that common in the UK, you’ll probable need to go to a Plumbers Merchant rather than the local DIY store.

It is possible to make a home made Water Shock Arrestor:

  • Take a 30cm (12in)length of 22mm copper tube and cap one end.
  • Connect this vertically into the existing pipework using a compression a T-joint as close to the source of the water hammer as possible so that air is trapped in it.

This will act as a shock absorber in the pipework, however, overtime the air will be absorbed into the water so the system will periodically need to be drained down and capped pipe removed so it can be refilled with air.

RO Reject Water Disposal – Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Treatment – What is Reverse Osmosis? #does #zero #water #remove #fluoride

Using Evaporators for Reverse Osmosis Reject Water

What is Reverse Osmosis (RO)?

Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology has been used for years in various industries to separate dissolved solids from water by forcing the water through a semi-permeable membrane. RO is also commonly used to purify drinking water and desalinate seawater to yield potable water. The water and other molecules with lower molecular weight (specific weight of molecules allowed to pass through is dependent on the selected membrane) pass through the micropores in the membrane, yielding a purified water stream called the permeate. Larger molecules are retained by the membrane as well as a portion of the water that does not pass through the membrane. This concentrated stream is called the concentrate or RO reject.

Using Evaporators to Dewater Reverse Osmosis Reject Streams

In industrial settings, RO is often used to remove total dissolved salts (TDS) from industrial wastewater or treated industrial wastewater and yield permeate with relatively low TDS concentrations.

While RO is an effective method for handling wastewater, what to do with the concentrate or reject water (typically as much as 20-50% of the RO feed water volume) can be an issue. Specifically, the high salinity in RO reject / RO concentrate can make it prohibitive for discharge to a local sewer facility. Hauling the wastewater to a treatment facility can also be prohibitively expensive.

ENCON Mechanical Vapor Compression (MVC) Evaporators and ENCON Thermal Evaporators have proven to be effective technologies for dewatering RO reject / RO concentrate waste streams. In brief, evaporation is a time-tested methodology for reducing the water portion of water-based waste. The evaporator converts the water portion of water-based waste to water vapor, while leaving the higher boiling contaminants behind. This greatly minimizes the amount of waste that needs to be hauled off-site.

Evaporation technology has always been more “hands off” than other wastewater treatment methodologies resulting in a dramatically lower labor cost. Evaporation technology can handle a much wider range of waste streams compared to membranes and traditional physical / chemical treatment methodologies. Finally, evaporation does a much better job of concentrating waste streams compared to other methods, thereby yielding a lower disposal volume and cost.

At a typical operating cost $0.01 – $0.02 per gallon of distillate, the ENCON MVC Evaporator is also very energy efficient and yields a high quality distillate. More information on MVC Evaporators can be found here in our Mechanical Vapor Compression section. If lower volumes of RO reject / RO concentrate need to be handled, the ENCON Thermal Evaporator heated by natural gas or other available heat sources can evaporate water to atmosphere at a typical cost of $0.10 per gallon of evaporated water, or almost zero is waste oil is available. More information on Thermal Evaporators can be found here in our thermal evaporator system section.

TDS Concentrations of RO reject / RO Concentrate

Typical RO reject / RO concentrate TDS concentrations are often in the range of 30,000 – 50,000 mg/liter. The salts in solution can range from highly soluble sodium and potassium salts to less soluble or reverse soluble calcium and barium salts. Note: The term reverse soluble implies lower solubility as solution temperature increases. ENCON MVC Evaporators operate at typical temperatures of 225-230°F for high TDS applications like RO reject / RO concentrate. Similar or slightly higher (250°F maximum) operating temperatures can be expected with high TDS applications for ENCON thermal evaporators .

Evaporator concentration endpoints tend to correspond closely with saturation concentrations of the various salts at the referenced temperatures. Many sodium and potassium salts such as sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and potassium nitrate, have saturation points in the range of 400,000 – 600,000 mg/liter at the referenced elevated temperatures. Based on simple arithmetic, concentrating the RO reject / RO concentrate wastewater from 30,000 mg/liter to 400,000 mg/liter corresponds to a volume reduction percentage of approximately 92.5%. Concentrating from 50,000 mg/liter to 600,000 mg/liter would yield a volume reduction percentage of approximately 91.6%.

Less soluble salts such as barium sulfate and magnesium carbonate present more of an issue due to the tendency to precipitate out and scale heat transfer surfaces. To minimize this issue, a type of anti-scale chemistry referred to as Threshold Scaling Inhibitors (TSI) are being used. TSI chemistry is added upstream of the evaporator and modifies the insoluble salt crystals creating a soft slurry that has less of a tendency to adhere to surfaces and cause scale. The resulting soft slurry also has a consistency that minimized the likelihood of erosion on heat exchanger or plumbing surfaces.

Acheiving Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)

When there is an interest or requirement to achieve zero liquid discharge (ZLD). evaporation can be used to concentrate the RO reject / RO concentrate, which can then by further dewatered with supplemental equipment. Please refer to the diagram below for a typical layout diagram for a ZLD solution that shows RO reject / RO concentrate (or other high TDS wastewater) being fed to the ENCON MVC Evaporator followed by dewatering of the MVC concentrate by a ENCON Thermal Evaporator and a centrifuge.

In the first stage of handling RO reject / RO concentrate, an MVC Evaporator is fed the RO reject / RO concentrate and it yields distilled water and concentrate. The concentrate goes to a concentrate storage tank, which separates into slurry and supernatant layers. The supernatant layer gets pumped to an ENCON Thermal Evaporator, which further concentrates the liquid while exhausting water vapor to atmosphere. The concentrated slurry from the thermal evaporator is pumped back into the concentrate storage tank. The slurry layer from the tank is pumped into a centrifuge.

How to Clean Up (and Forget the Nightmare) of Basement Flooding

Act fast to reduce repair costs. The longer your basement sits in water, the more it’s going to cost to clean up.

You can clean up some of the icky mess yourself to save money, but a pro is much nicer on your back (and your nose).

Just because you have home insurance doesn’t mean you’re covered. Best to check before a flood happens.

Rain, rain, go away. And sewage backups. And burst pipes. All y’all can GO. AWAY. Especially if they turn your wet bar into a soakingwet bar and your ping-pong table into an island.

Every homeowner with a basement imagines that horror. If it should happen to you, don’t retreat into a fetal position on your couch and hope for a miracle, no matter how much you want to. You can deal with the soggy disaster. Here’s how.

4 Things to Do Right Away

Don’t wait until you’ve reached the fifth stage of grief before addressing a flood. Fast action can minimize a rising, rank situation — and the money it’ll cost to repair.

1. The first thing to do is really a “don’t,” says Glenn Gallas, vice president of operations at Mr. Rooter Plumbing. Don’t ever, ever step into standing basement water. “You could be shocked or electrocuted,” he says. Who wants to venture into that murky mess, anyway? Turn the power off or call an electrician to be safe.

2. Then stop the flow of water. How you do that depends on what the source is:

Broken or malfunctioning pipes

Turn off your water’s shut-off valve. If you don’t know where that is, scope it out now — before the worst happens. Some valves are buried in the ground and require special tools to turn off.

Stop flushing toilets and running faucets. Your local sewage authority may offer pumping services or let you submit a reimbursement claim. If you have a septic system, though, it’s on you. Call the septic company to have your tank pumped ASAP.

Sorry, that’s bad news. You can’t turn off Mother Nature. The good news: Groundwater flooding might not stink as badly as sewage. Get references for a waterproofing pro or a structural engineer because you could have a foundation problem.

Groundwater was the culprit for Nancy Friedman and her husband when their St. Louis home flooded back in 2014. They knew they had a tiny wet spot in their basement, but “I didn’t think too much of it,” Nancy Friedman says. “Going downstairs is not an everyday occurrence for us,” she says, especially since they both travel a lot.

That tiny wet spot soon became a full-on flood in their basement, causing thousands of dollars in carpet damage – not to mention the cost to repair the structural issue that allowed water to seep in in the first place.

3. Find a plumber withahigh-capacity pump. This is not a job for a DIYer. It needs to get done fast. You need a professional-grade pump. “The longer that water sits, and the longer your drywall spends under water, the more long-term damage,” Gallas says. The more damage, the more it costs to clean up.

4. Make your smartphone earn its keep. Take photos and video. then back them up in the cloud, so you’ll have them for insurance purposes.

Spend Oh-So-Wisely on a Kitchen Remodel

DIY Some of the Cleanup to Save Money

Once the water is pumped out, the rest can be a DIY job. Just make sure to protect yourself with:

  • Gloves
  • Rubber boots
  • Eye protection
  • A mask (especially if you’re dealing with a sewage backup)
  • A nose plug if the smell is really bad

Then suck up the remaining muck with a wet-dry vac. You’ll also need an army’s worth of paper towels and plastic bags to dispose of the mess.

Unfortunately, you’ll have to say goodbye to all rugs, carpets, and upholstery, which will soak up floodwater contaminants and bacteria, regardless of the flood source. (Seriously sentimental items might be restorable by a professional, but don’t get your hopes too high.) That’s what happened to Friedman. “The first thing we had to do was pull up the carpet.”

Other restoration steps:

  • Open all windows and doors, and run large fans and dehumidifiers.
  • Scrub water-contaminated walls, floors, cabinetry, or hardware with a soapy solution. Ventilate again.
  • Make a bactericide by adding 1.5 cups of DIY Tip Bleach doesn’t kill mold and mildew. It kills the bacteria that they feed on, but doesn’t destroy the nasty fungi itself. Use soap to zap it. bleach and a few drops of liquid soap to a gallon of water. Spray on the walls; let air dry.

But Don’t Feel Like a Wimp if You Want to Hire a Pro

In fact, both Gallas and Friedman recommend hiring a restoration service, as long as the company you hire is trustworthy and affordable. A small flood might cost as little as $500 to pump out and dry, but a large flood can cost up to $10,000.

“There’s a lot of companies out there that put a guy in a truck and think a high-powered fan is good enough to dry a basement,” Gallas says. Improper technique, like not allowing the home to dry for long enough or failing to properly treat drywall, puts your home at risk for mold or mildew in addition to the flooding damage.

So just be sure to do your homework on who you hire.

Don’t Assume Insurance Will Cover Your Repairs

Friedman’s first call when her basement flooded was to her insurance company. “They told me, ‘You don’t have flood insurance,’” Friedman says. “I thought everybody had flood insurance!”

Standard home insurance often doesn’t cover all types of floods, especially groundwater.

“If I could do a speech on floods, it would be: Do you know this very moment, for sure, if you have flood insurance ?” Friedman says. “Call your insurance agent right now and ask.”

But the best scenario is no flood at all.

5 Things To Do So You’ll Never, Ever Flood Again

  1. Install a leak detector and high-water alarm. These small devices notify you before a small leak becomes a disaster, either via an audible alarm or a text message.
  2. Insulate your pipes. Thawing pipes are one of the leading causes of basement flooding.
  3. Maintain your backwater valve. It prevents sewage from seeping from the septic or sewer system to your home.
  4. Consider a sump pump. Every basement should have one of these flooding saviors. “I think sump pumps should be wedding gifts,” Friedman says.
  5. Flush and dump with caution. Dumping anything besides waste and toilet paper down your toilet or drains is a big no-no — from tampons to grease. These clog the system, causing backups.

3 Ways to Dry Wet Carpet #carpet #water #removal

#

How to Dry Wet Carpet

Spread towels over the area of wet carpet. You’ll then need to walk up and down the toweled area until the towels are completely saturated. Take those towels away and replace them with dry towels in the same area.

  • Keep doing this until the area of the carpet is dry.
  • You should still check underneath the carpet to make sure the carpet padding and the floor aren’t sopping wet, as well.

Vacuum the wet carpet. Do not do this with a regular home vacuum. You need a vacuum that is made to soak up water. Most vacuum cleaner sold for home use are for dry cleaning only and are extremely dangerous if used on wet carpets. Do not use your household vacuum cleaner unless it is approved for wet vacuuming.

  • Vacuum the carpet with the wet vacuum cleaner until you get no more water. The wet vacuum cleaner removes water from the carpet itself, but it may not be able to remove it from the padding if the water has wicked through the carpet backing or soaked in under the edges.
  • Keep an eye on the fill tank and make sure you dump it before hitting overflow. Depending on the amount of water in the carpet, you may have to dump the tank several times.

Encourage the moisture to evaporate. You should use this along with the other two options, because it takes some time to achieve. Grab some ceiling fans, hairdryers, household fans, even a dehumidifier, if you have one.

  • Keep them pointed towards the moisture until the water begins to dry up.
  • Again, you’ll need to check underneath the carpet to make sure that the floor and carpet padding are not still sopping wet.

Method Two of Three:
Drying a Wall-to-Wall Carpet Edit

Move furniture off the wet carpet. You want to do this so that you can lift up the carpet and check the pad and the floor underneath. It’s important to remove the furniture as quickly as possible so that you can get started on the carpet.

  • Leaving the furniture on the wet carpeting can damage both the furniture and the flooring.

Remove as much of the water as possible. You probably won’t be able to take up the entire floor, but you are going to have to check beneath the carpet, so keep that in mind. There are several different ways that you can get rid of the water. [1]

  • Rent a vacuum capable of removing water. Do not use a regular house vacuum, because a regular house vacuum can’t handle vacuuming up water. Vacuum until you get no more water.
  • Alternately you could rent a hot water extraction unit. Check with a local carpet cleaning company to see if you can rent theirs. This helps suck the water from the carpet, although again you will have to check beneath the water.

Check amount of water beneath carpet. Getting rid of the water on top of the carpet is only the beginning. You’ll need to get rid of the water along the floor and in the padding beneath the carpet, otherwise the floor could buckle.

  • Walk across the carpet. If there’s a sopping/squelching sound when you do, then there’s definitely still water beneath the carpet.

Raise carpet off floor. Start in a corner. Using pliers and a pair of work gloves, start separating the carpet from the padding and the floor. You’re going to need to dry the floor beneath the carpet, otherwise it could cause floor buckling. Avoid cutting the carpet, because it will be incredibly difficult to put back together attractively.

  • You can also lift the carpet up pulling it off of the installation strips at one of the corners. You can also do this on a carpet’s side or edge if you have a short side that is easy to access and work with.
  • Fold the corner or side of the rug over so you can see the carpet pad.

Blow air between carpet and padding. You’re going to want to try to dry the pad without removing the carpet, especially if the pad seems to have only gotten a little damp and the subfloor seems dry.

  • A dehumidifier in a closed room will pull out water fast, and can be rented from rental companies.
  • Keep the corner or side of carpet that you have lifted raised and use a fan to blow air under the carpet unto the pad. Turn up the heat and open the windows to aid in the drying.
  • Attach a vacuum hose (for vacuuming up wet things) to the exhaust of a vacuum then put the hose under the carpet, placing the carpet back over the hose. The hot air will cause the carpet to float over the pad and speed up the drying process.

Call in the professionals. In the end, one of the best ways to deal with a wall-to-wall wet carpet is to call in someone who knows how to deal with it. It’s important to do this as soon as possible so the company can salvage as much of the carpet, floor, and padding as possible.

  • Make sure the service is guaranteed and look for a company that promises to dry the carpet, the pad and the floor if necessary.
  • Check with your homeowners or renters insurance. Depending on the cause of the wet carpet, it is possible your policy may cover the cost of the carpet cleaning.

Whether you have to remove the carpet or not, the carpet and pad may shrink and seams may separate from the excess water. A professional carpet company should be able to do any needed repairs.

If your carpet is wet with dirty water, remove it all as quickly as possible. Add more clean water to the wet carpet before vacuuming the dirty water out. Rent a carpet cleaner instead of just a vacuum and clean the carpet using carpet cleaner before vacuuming out excess water. Sucking out just the dirty water may cause the dirt to stay behind and stain the carpet.

Gas Hot Water Heater Troubleshooting – Problems and Solution #hot #water #heater #is #leaking #from #the #bottom

Gas Hot Water Heater Troubleshooting

Before you do any gas hot water heater troubleshooting and DIY repairs, one is important; leaking propane and natural gas can be dangerous. Natural gas, when it is leaking tends to rise up while propane as it is heavier than the surrounding air collects at the floor level.

If you smell a leaking gas near the gas water heater, shut off the pilot light, close the main gas valve and DO NOT activate any electrical power switch, not even light. Call plumber or gas utility immediately, from another room. This is a big problem where any spark is hazardous.

Before we show you how to do gas hot water heater troubleshooting, describe common problems and symptoms, we want you to become familiar with how gas water heater works and its main parts. To trouble shoot and do repairs is much easier after.

Gas Water Heaters, parts and how they work

Cold water from house plumbing enters the heater tank, through the dip tube and fills the tank from bottom up.

The control valve keeps the small pilot light on and once the temperature on the thermostat drops below the set temperature it ignites the burner.

Hot flue gases run though the flue pipe located in the middle of the tank and transfers the heat to the surrounding water, making it warmer and finally hot.

Hot flue gases are getting colder, because of the heat transfer and vent out either naturally or forced by power vent. Draft hood located on the top of the hot water tank provides sufficient air for proper and stable gas combustion.

Once you open hot water tap for shower or dishes, hot water is drawn from the top of the unit, through plumbing to the open hot water faucet.

TPR or temperature pressure relief valve prevents extreme pressure in the tank, helping the excessive air or water to get out.

For draining and tank flushing, there is a drain valve at the bottom of the tank.

Inside the water heater tank, sacrificial anode rod is used to prevent corrosion due to water heating process.

Now, it is much easier to do gas hot water heater troubleshooting. We will assume during this presentation that gas water heater was properly installed and was function correctly before your problem occurred.

Hot water heater problems and troubleshooting described below are related exclusively to the tank type. For water heaters troubleshooting, repairs with common problems, for both gas and electric units go back here .

Note: Basic gas and electrical knowledge are necessary for proper troubleshooting gas water heaters.

Common problems and solution

Problem #1: No hot water

Check do you still have gas in your house or to the water heater; the main gas valve might be closed. If you suddenly have no hot water, your water usage may be exceeded the tank capacity. If that is the case, wait for water heater to recover.

Another problem related to no hot water issue is that your pilot light has gone out. Relight your pilot flame according to the instructions printed on the unit. If it won’t relight, you need a new thermocouple.

Problem #2: Lack of oxygen

For the proper operation of gas water heaters, fresh air needs to be delivered for gas combustion. The air should enter the gas chamber from the base of the unit and enter the flue vent from below the draft hood.

If there is an insufficient air flow, problems can rise, like: pilot outage, yellow burner flame, sooting burner flame, smell of burnt gas in the room and possible presence of carbon monoxide CO.

Solution is in prevention; check and provide enough air flow; check the flue vent and base of the water heater for possible obstructions and do not cover it with the insulation blanket.

Problem #3: Sooting

If your gas water heater is running and the chamber and flue are sooted, but the burner is clean, check is there a lack of air. If all of these elements are sooted, check: a wrong orifice might be used, excessive gas pressure, loose gas burner or loose gas connection in the burner assembly.

If pilot flame or main burner flames are too large or too small, you might have dirt in orifice or gas supply tubing, or using incorrect orifice size. Follow manual for the right spec.

Problem #4: Condensation

When gas is burning, flue gas cools to the “dew point” resulting in condensation than can go back to the gas chamber.

What can cause flue gases to cool are cold air supply and cool flue pipe surface. It usually happens when a new heater is filled with cold water for the first time.

Condensation also happens if large amount of hot water is used in a short time and when the incoming water is very cold.

Another reason for condensation is the increased combustion efficiency, usually when above 87.5% of flue heat is transferred to surrounding water.

Symptoms when condensation occurs are water around the heater right after the gas water heater operation; water dripping, small black and red spots on the gas burner, top of the heater and vent piping (that is the reason for using PVC or more expensive stainless steel vent pipes).

When condensate falls onto the burner you can hear a sizzling or frying noise.

Solution is to raise the supply air temperature, stored water temperature or even tank size (make sense if the existing one is too old, and low performing).

Problem #5: Burner won’t stay lit

High ambient room temperature

Dirty or clogged air intake

Flame arrestor openings are blocked

Problem #6: Pilot light won’t light or stay lit.

Check is there a gas at all or is the gas pressure low, and if there is a problem with the gas supply, call the utility company.

If there is an air in gas line, bleed the air from the gas line (should be done by certified technician).

When attempting to light pilot, be sure that the pilot light button is fully depressed. Check is the pilot electrode sparking to pilot and is piezo igniter working properly.

There might be also a defective magnet in combination thermostat-gas valve, replace it if necessary.

If the pilot tube or orifice is clogged, clean it. If thermocouple connection is loose with gas valve or in pilot light assembly bracket, tighten it with your finger and 1/4 turn with the wrench, it might need just a simple adjustment.

Thermocouple has to be properly secured and in contact with the pilot flame. If it is broken, replace it. If you have a melted insulation on igniter wire or shorting of igniter wire replace it.

If pilot light goes out periodically, these might be the cause of the problem: condensation may be extinguishing the pilot light, insufficient combustion air supply, clogged or incorrect vent system or inconsistent gas supply and pressure.

Checking the vent system

Venting system is very important for the safe water heater operation and its efficiency. 90 degree elbow installed on the top of the tank draft hood, can reduce the vent efficiency by up to 50%. Recommendation is to install vent system that rises straight up. For horizontal vent pipes there are some different installation rules that has to be followed (use manufacturer’s manual for info).

Decompression is another reason why the pilot flame will fail. If air cannot enter as fast as it is being used, the air pressure drops below the outside pressure and it creates an effect called “capping”.

Solution for decompression is to make two air vents on the outside wall, one close to the ceiling and the other closed to the ground; if not and the room is on the balcony for example, provide venting opening on the door.

Note: when you do a gas hot water heater troubleshooting and repairs, make sure that gas supply is off and always refer to the user manual.

How to Repair Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring continues to grow in popularity, and for good reason. It s durable, sleek and tidy. Furthermore, it requires so much less maintenance than other types of flooring like carpet and wood.

Unfortunately, many people still remain quite uninformed as to its many nuances. Like any other type of flooring, it too comes with its own fair share of advantages and disadvantages. And it just happens that these pros and cons play a big role when it comes to repairing laminate flooring from water damage.

Nuances Of Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is technically resistant to water damage. If you spill some water on laminate flooring but promptly wipe it up, then the floor will suffer no damage. Unfortunately, the situation changes if and when flooding occurs. If and when laminate flooring becomes saturated with water, it becomes warped and damaged.

If the seams between laminate floor planks get saturated, they swell. When this occurs, your only option becomes to replace the planks with new ones. What of course makes laminate floor repair so difficult is that it s really difficult to find perfectly matching laminate. This is why replacement is usually the recommended option.

Symptoms Of Laminate Floor Damage

So how do you know if your laminate is floor is damaged? It s actually extraordinarily easy to detect. Just keep an eye open for some of the following types of symptoms:

  • Puffy/Swollen Plank Edges
  • Excessive Cupping
  • Excessive Crowning
  • Excessive Buckling
  • Excessive Cracking
  • Excessive Splitting

Unfortunately, the majority of these symptoms cannot be rectified. This means you must replace the flooring. The good news is that you don t have to replace all of it!

Positives Of Laminate Flooring

Here s the beautiful thing about laminate flooring it s composed of numerous pieces. If carpet gets really wet, then the entire carpet has to be replaced. With laminate flooring, you can just replace those boards and planks that were affected. It s common, in fact, to discover that only some planks were damaged. So why replace everything!?

Let The Repairs Begin

Before we go on any further, we want to point out that you should speak with a professional before you begin any DIY repairs. Most restoration specialists provide absolutely free inspections. These inspections can provide you with a lot of insightful information.

Regardless, here are some basic repair tips:

Stop The Leak

Before you even think of dealing with your floors, make certain you locate and stop the leak. This usually means immediately turning off your water supply. It might also mean replacing broken pipes and whatnot. Again, you ll want to speak to a professional, especially if you re dealing with a leak that s contained within your home s walls.

Identify Damaged Plans

The next step involves identifying damaged planks. Your main goal here is to figure out which planks are so screwed up that they must be replaced.

Pry, Pry, Pry

The next thing you need to do is use a circular saw, crowbar or whatnot to pry the damaged planks loose. Note that each plank is one whole unit. This means that all components (including the baseboard) need to be pulled out.

Replace The Planks

This is the make it or break it part. Replacing a plank is not easy, especially if you have older laminate floors that may be out of style. Before you replace the planks, however, make sure you completely clean the floor underneath.

Additional Tips

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind during the repair and replacement process:

  • Make sure you deal with each plank on a one-by-one basis. Avoid trying to remove multiple planks at once. They need to be removed one by one.
  • Obviously, ensure that the new planks and strips match the rest of your laminate flooring. Otherwise, your floor will look quite odd.
  • Consider hiring a professional to do the repair and/or replacement, especially if you are not sure of what to do.

Seeking Professional Assistance

No matter what you do, make sure you speak with a professional. It costs you nothing to get a free assessment. Plus, the professional might discover problems that didn t even occur to you. Remember that you can only fix what you identify! And those things you don t fix those things you fail to identify could wind up causing you far more problems down the road!

Removing a Light Water Stain From Drywall on the Ceiling #drywall #water #damage

#

Removing a Light Water Stain From Drywall on the Ceiling

A coat of paint fixes most minor water stains on drywall.

When water stains mar your ceiling, the water comes from above. Whether from the roof or a slow leak from a water pipe, the drip itself is more of a problem than the stain. If possible, examine the back of the drywall for mold and treat any you find with a bleach solution. Next, you should address the source of the water that caused the stain. After resolving those issues, removing the stain isn’t difficult once the drywall has had a chance to dry fully.

1

Mix a solution of equal parts chlorine bleach and water in a bucket. Put on rubber gloves, climb a stepladder and use a sponge to wash the stain thoroughly. The bleach may remove the stain, but even if it doesn’t, it will kill any mold.

2

Let the drywall dry, then brush on a coat of stain-blocking oil- or water-based primer. Cover an area slightly larger than the stain itself.

3

Paint the area with the ceiling color after the primer dries. If you haven’t painted the ceiling for a while, the repair may appear lighter than the rest of the ceiling. If so, it’s a good idea to either clean the entire ceiling with detergent and water or paint it.

Things You Will Need

  • Chlorine bleach
  • Bucket
  • Rubber gloves
  • Stepladder
  • Sponge
  • Stain-blocking primer
  • Detergent
  • Paint

Tip

  • A persistent leak can wear a hole through the back of the drywall before the damage appears on the front. If the area inside the stain feels spongy and waterlogged, cut out the damaged section with a utility knife and patch the area with new drywall. Repaint after taping and finishing the patch.

Warning

  • Discolored drywall is often your first indication of a leak that can cause damage that is more serious if you don’t fix it.

High Efficiency Gas Storage Water Heaters

What else should I look for when buying a high-efficiency gas storage water heater?

ENERGY STAR qualified gas storage water heaters are currently available from contractors and retailers. If need to replace your gas water heater soon, consider these suggestions:

  1. Plan ahead if you can. To make your life easier, plan ahead for your next water heater replacement and you will have time to research and select the best technology for your situation before it’s an emergency. Your installer may need time to order the proper model, and it may take longer to install than a standard water heater.
  2. Check product availability. Find out what certified models are available on the market by viewing the ENERGY STAR Product List. You will then need to visit manufacturer Web sites, call local installers, or visit your local retailer to determine who carries these units in your area, or call your plumber or contractor to see what products are available.
  3. Estimate the capacity you’ll need. The amount of hot water a model can deliver under standard test conditions is determined measured by two things: The capacity or volume (in gallons) and the first-hour rating. You can determine the capacity of your existing unit by looking at the nameplate or yellow Energy Guide sticker. If your current water heater meets your needs most of the time, you can probably replace it with one the same size. But also take a look at the first-hour rating of any new model you consider. The first-hour rating measures how much hot water the unit can deliver during a busy hour under standard test conditions. This means you can get better hot water performance without having to buy a larger capacity water heater.
  4. Contact a Contractor or Manufacturer. Ideally, you will find a local contractor who can assess your site, provide recommendations, install a system, and then perform periodic maintenance. When choosing a contractor you should:
    • Request cost estimates in writing.
    • Ask for references.
    • Check the company with your local Better Business Bureau.
    • See if the company will obtain a local permit if necessary and understands local residential building codes and other regulations.
  5. Search for rebates. You may be able to reduce your costs by taking advantage of rebates. Be sure to review the eligibility rules before you make your purchase.
    • Use the Special Deals Finder to determine whether there are rebates available for ENERGY STAR certified water heaters in your zip code.
  6. Consider other measures that may also save energy. If you are in the midst of new construction or home remolding project, you may have come across other proposed approaches to water heating. Under the right circumstances, these technologies can save significant amounts of energy.
    Point-of-Use (POU) Electric
    Hot Water Recirculating System

If your water heater is more than 10 years old, now is the best time to plan its replacement. A new ENERGY STAR certified gas storage water heater can save in energy costs over its lifetime AND now you can save even more with rebate incentives and a $300 federal tax credit for 2016. All those energy savings add up to big savings for the environment by helping prevent climate change. ENERGY STAR is the right choice, right now!

  • Water Softener Prices – Don – t Get Ripped Off! #kinetico #water #softener #complaints

    #

    What Do Water Softeners Cost?

Hard water is a problem in many areas. If you live in such an area, you may have probably noticed how hard water affects your faucets, stains your sink and your cutlery and wears off your washing machines faster. The solution is simple and fairly inexpensive: install a water softener.

There is a wide range of water softeners in terms of price and capacity, therefore it shouldn t be too hard to find the best one for you. Even if you can t afford one for the entire household, you can, at least, install one for the kitchen.

This article aims to offer you a a starting point in your research, by giving you several water softener prices by brand and model.

The cheapest among Whirlpool water softeners is the 33,000-Grain WHES33. It is NSF certified to reduce hard water symptoms and it features 6th Sense technology. It costs $397 and it is best for households of 1-5 people.

For households with 1-5+ people, the WHES44 is more suitable. It has all the features of the previously described model and it costs $497.

If your household has 1-6+ people, you may need to buy the 48,000-Grain WHES48 model, which is $847. This one has lifetime limited warranty on resin media and tanks.

    Krystal Pure Prices

The Krystal Pure range includes 3 models, the 36000 Grain, priced at $825, the 42000 Grain, priced at $1071, and the 50000 Grain, priced at $1265. All of them feature Duraex top line resin and are in fact four products in one: softener, monitor, iron and sediment.

The Kenmore range includes four models: High-Efficiency, Ultra High-Efficiency, Extra High-Efficiency and Hybrid. The prices vary between $80 and $700, depending on the model and shop. If you look at Sears, you may even buy refurbished ones, which would be in the lower price range.

Culligan is another expert manufacturer of water softeners. They have about five various models, but they don t show prices on their website. Nonetheless, if you want more details, you can make an appointment with one of their consultants. If you just want to make yourself an idea about the prices, you should know that the Culligan Gold Series costs about $2300-$2400. More on Culligan water softeners .

Kinetico and Ecowater are two other brands that made themselves a name and have an established reputation in the water treatments industry.

The Ecowater ERR 3500 water refining system with ERO 375 R/O costs $3400. If you go for the ERR 2500, it will cost you $700 less.

For the same range, the Kinetico K2040 Water Softener with dechlorinator and filter housing and 5MS 5 micron sediment filter will come up to a total of $3950. All the above mentioned prices include also the installation and the systems are comparable, therefore they can serve pretty much the same size of a household. More on Kinetico here .

When choosing your system, it s probably a good idea to look at the price for consumables as well. On long term, it matters.

Does Homeowner’s Insurance Cover my Pool?

Insurance Q A: “Does homeowner’s insurance cover my pool?”

Having a pool is a dream for many homeowners. After all, a pool can turn the backyard into a sanctuary during the scorching summer months.

However, there are some things you must consider regarding your pool when it comes to homeowners insurance. Specifically, how does a homeowner’s insurance policy respond to potential bodily injury claims and how much coverage, if any, is afforded to fix your pool in the event it’s damaged?

    Pool Liability Coverage

As a homeowner, it’s important to recognize the increased liability associated with having such an oasis on your property. You’d have live under a rock to not realize there are some inherent risks to owning a pool, especially when it comes to children…whether invited to swim in your pool or not!

Fortunately, a homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the additional liability resulting from the ownership of a pool.

Typically, when you fill out a homeowner’s insurance application with an agent or insurer, such information will be requested, and your policy will be adjusted accordingly.

    Pool Liability Exclusions

Liability coverage for a pool may be excluded by your homeowner’s insurance policy if you do not have certain “controls” in place to make your pool safe. Specifically, many insurers will require you to have your pool (or yard) fenced. Many insurers even require a fence be at least a certain height, maybe 4 or 5 feet, and not constructed of chain-links.

Additionally, some insurers may deny coverage if your pool has a diving board or a slide. Both of which can make your pool much more fun, but certainly increase the statistical odds that someone may be injured while on your property.

Be sure to get this clarified as soon as possible. You certainly don’t want to be in a position where you have a liability claim and NO COVERAGE.

Is Damage to the Pool Covered?

Whether or not physical damage to your pool is covered will depend on your insurer. Some insurers will cover damage to your pool under “Coverage B – other structures,” while other insurers may not cover physical damage to your pool at all.

Some insurers look at an in-ground pool, made of cement, similar to how they look at foundation damage to your home…it’s your responsibility to ensure cracks in the cement are repaired when observed.

When it comes to pool maintenance equipment, such as filters and pumps, coverage is normally afforded by a homeowner’s insurance policy under “Coverage B – other structures.” This type of equipment is viewed similarly to that of an air conditioner compressor on the outside of your home.

    Building a New Pool?

Many homeowners neglect to mention the addition of a pool while their current policy is active. But it is necessary to contact your insurance agent or insurer prior to having a pool built to ensure your new pool is adequately covered by your existing policy. Based on what we discussed above, you might have to find a new insurer.

Every insurance company has different underwriting guidelines, and your home may not qualify after the pool is installed.

Your insurance premium may be adjusted (higher) to compensate for the additional liability, or if you’re lucky, nothing may change at all.

Some questions you may be asked when shopping for insurance for your house with a pool:

    – Is the pool above or below ground?
    – Is your yard fenced in? This might be a requirement by ordinance in your town.
    – Is your pool fenced in? Some companies may require the yard and pool be fenced in.
    – Do you have a pool cover? There are hard plastic covers available for some pools now.
    – Is your pool drained in the winter months?
    – Do you have a diving board? Some companies allow for pools, but will not cover a diving board.
    – Do you want to raise your liability limits? The risk of bodily injury and drowning death both increase with a pool?

Water leak detection has become a plumbing service that is valued because it has the potential to save homeowners huge amounts of money and property damage. A water leak that goes undetected can result in dangerous mold growth, rotted wood and standing water that could attract bacteria and other organisms. Finding the leak and repairing it at the source will minimize the damage and the health risks.

Do you want to know what other people are saying about our range of services? Click here to find out!

Dangers of an Undetected Water Leak

The degree of danger that exists from an undetected water leak depends on how long the leak has gone undetected. Things may seem just fine on the surface, but if a pipe has split or even has a small leak and no one can see it, serious damage may result. If this type of leak occurs under a vanity, behind a wall or under a floor, it may result in mold growth, rotting wood, ruined carpets and drywall, and a long, expensive cleanup. Undetected leaks also lead to elevated water bills, which is another reason it’s important to catch them as soon as possible.

    Reasons to Call Right Away

Along with higher bills, you may notice excess moisture or condensation in the area of the leak; you might see small patches of mold, smell a musty odor or feel dampness on walls, floors or ceilings. If the leak is in a pipe that’s outside the house, you might notice the excess moisture on the ground when you walk on it.

    Benefits of Professional Service

Plumbers that specialize in leak detection use special diagnostic equipment and cameras and are trained to find even the most challenging water leaks. Professional, experienced service means your leak will be found and it will be fixed, and any other issues related to the leak will be addressed. The key is to call in a reputable company, then sit back, and allow them to do their jobs.

Trying to figure out where a water leak originated is an exercise in futility for most homeowners. The longer you search, the more damage is being done, so it’s wise to call for professional assistance as soon as you notice a problem. Call Gene Johnson Plumbing Heating at (206) 792-7495 in the Seattle, WA area and we will send a plumber to get the situation under control.

    What Is Water Damage Restoration?

The first thing to know is what water damage restoration is. Water damage restoration is attempting to bring back your house or your properties to its original state before water damage. It includes removing of abnormal water from structures to restore materials to a normal condition. It prevents moisture damage, mold and soil contamination, odors, and loss of indoor air quality.

When damage has already set in, water damage restoration is done with steps like cleaning, refinishing, removal and replacement. Although water damage can be mostly caused by natural flooding, most abnormal water comes from within the building such as from overflowed toilets, sewer backups, or river floods.

Our mission is to decontaminate and dry materials efficiently. With the exception of easily movable items like furniture and contents, the aim is usually to dry them on-site rather than remove them. In some cases, water damage restoration can even save saturated books and documents, hardwood floors, and soaked walls and ceilings.

    Orlando Water Damage Restoration Services

Our 6 Step Proven Water Damage Restoration System

Water damage can occur at any time. It is crucial that the appropriate procedure is followed when restoring a home or business. Water is very intrusive, and can get into spaces most people wouldn t think to check. This is why taking time in the assessment stage of the restoration process is a key step we go through at Dan Dan The Carpet Man, that others fall short on.

    1. Damage Assessment:

We need to know what we are dealing with! Our technicians will arrive on site promptly after your call, and using special moisture detecting units, will assess how much damage has already been done as well as the central source of the water. Additionally, we will determine if the area is safe, and whether or not a power shut off is needed. Depending on where the extent of the water damage, we may need to come equipped with special equipment for the job. so be sure to give us an accurate description of what we are dealing with during your initial phone call with us.

    2. Water Extraction:

Water extraction is the most important part of restoring your home or business back to normal. Using our portable or truck mounted equipment; we will quickly be able to remove large amounts of water from the area. Heavy duty submersible pumps will be used where needed to continuously pump out high level water from your home or business.

    3. Drying:

After the initial water is pumped out, it is important to dry the area properly to prevent microbial growth and rot. Our commercial grade equipment will dry the affected area until the moisture levels are back to normal and all structure elements are sufficiently dry ( wall interiors, sub-floor, etc).

    4. Dehumidifying:

Our industry grade, low-grain, dehumidifiers will help reduce the overall humidity, producing dry air that will pull moisture from the structure elements and minimize secondary damages. If your property is not properly dehumidified, you may run the risk of having mold developed in your home or business. We use commercial grade equipment to ensure that no mold follows the water removal.

    5. Normalizing:

Normalizing is the result from proper drying procedure that considers outside humidly levels, inside (unaffected area) humidity levels, and the humidity levels in the affected areas, as well as the humidity levels of the air at the dehumidifying equipment. This technique is achieved with proper monitoring of all interior water intrusion scenarios.

    6. Monitoring:

the job from start to finish using Psychrometric procedure, we chart the progression of the drying and document it so it is established that we did the job correctly without doing more or less than what was needed. This protects the customer from paying too much for unneeded service and yet ensures enough drying took place.

Choose Dan Dan for Your Water Damage Restoration Job

It is important that you work with a professional water damage restoration company to ensure that the job is done the best way possible. WATER DAMAGE CHECKLIST

Water damage has now surpassed fire as Canada s leading cause of personal property claims. Examples of water damage include flooding, sewer backup, broken pipes, leaky plumbing, and more. To help avoid water damage in your home, take a few simple precautions to decrease the chances of it happening to you.

    INSIDE YOUR HOME

    • Buy or increase your sewer backup coverage as needed
    • Install a sewer backup prevention valve on the main line of your home
    • Install water monitors that alert you if a leak occurs and shut off the main water supply if moisture is detected
    • Inspect all plumbing for signs of cracks or leaks, and replace older plumbing
    • Inspect older appliances, particularly washing machine and dishwasher hoses, and replace them with steel braided hoses.
    • On appliances and/or plumbing fixtures, replace old and worn rubber hoses with flexible steel-braided hoses
    • Avoid pouring fats, oils and grease down household drains
    • Check water supply lines regularly for leaks and loose connections
    • Check caulk and grout around bathtubs and showers and retouch as necessary
    • Reduce home water use during heavy rainfall and rapid thaw to reduce pressure on sewage systems and potential for water back-up.

Talk to your insurance broker to review your policy and learn what coverage exists in regards to water damage

    OUTSIDE YOUR HOME

    • Before the winter, drain all pipes and garden hoses
    • Keep storm sewer grates clear of leaves and debris
    • Disconnect downspouts draining directly into the sewer system and redirect them at least 6 feet away from your home s foundation; test downspouts to ensure proper drainage from the roof
    • Ensure your lot is graded to aid drainage away from your home
    • Make considerations for reverse-sloped driveways
    • Ensure there is at least 200 mm (8 in) clearance between finished ground level and the bottom of the downspout; otherwise consider installing window wells
    • Ensure waste water lines are not blocked by tree roots
    • Ensure you roof doesn t have loose or curled shingles
    • If you have a septic system, have it pumped and serviced regularly

    FOUNDATIONS AND BASEMENTS

Your home s foundation and basement are areas where significant, and often expensive, damage can occur. The origin of leaks is often traced to the foundation. Minor cracks in the foundation are not normally cause for concern; however, major cracks can represent substantial movement and can allow water to seep into your basement. Filling in foundation cracks and stopping them from spreading helps to prevent water damage and serious structural issues. To diminish risks of water damage in your basement:

    • Find and seal any cracks in foundation walls and basement floor
    • Avoid storing items directly on the basement floor (store items in plastic storage containers on raised shelving)
    • Be sure to keep floor drains unobstructed
    • Always check your basement for leaks after heavy rainfall or a rapid thaw

    SUMP PUMPS AND BACKWATER VALVES

A sump pump is a common and effective basement water collection system. Sump pumps collect water from the weeping tiles around basements and send it outside, away from your home. The sump pump is activated by a float switch that turns on when the water in the sump rises past a certain level.

To ensure your sump pump is in good working order, check the float to ensure it s clean and moving freely by slowly pouring water into the sump tank. Watch for the float to rise and start the pump. Once the pump starts, the water level will quickly lower and the float will shut off the pump.

Backwater valves installed on the main water line of a home are an effective way of preventing sewer back-up. Many municipalities amended their building codes to ensure that backwater valves are installed in all newly constructed homes.

How does club soda remove red wine stains?

Chemist Pete Wishnok of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology explains.

The Internet is full of Web sites discussing whether club soda can defeat red wine stains. Some experiments show that club soda does not work very well, whereas others indicate that it is pretty good at removing red wine, so the evidence still seems to be mixed. There’s no particularly good chemical reason why club soda should remove stains: it’s essentially just water with carbon dioxide dissolved in it, along with some salts. (It is weakly acidic, so it might decolorize stains that can act as acid-base indicators.) Almost everyone, though, seems to have a story.

In my experience, club soda does work sometimes. For instance, it’s worked dozens of times for wine spills on our living room carpet (which probably says more about our lifestyle than it does about club soda). But it didn’t work at all on the tablecloth during Christmas dinner, even though the laundromat did the trick the next day.

The most common theory suggests that the secret ingredient is the bubbles, and there may be something to that. What’s probably more important, however, is a combination of how fast you can run and the nature of the fabric involved. For example, our carpet is a synthetic that absorbs stains slowly so–if you get there quickly with lots of paper towels–the club soda simply acts as a carrier to help blot everything up. Water would probably work as well, but club soda is more fun. In the case of the tablecloth, the club soda might have diluted the red wine out and helped keep it from setting, so that the laundry detergent could finish the job later. But the club soda itself did not do much for the stain other than spread it around.

My conclusion is that if club soda works, plain water probably works as well. Either way, the stain is gone. If it doesn’t work, then a commercial stain-removal product might save the day. In addition, a particular commercial stain-remover might work better with a given set of fabrics, so it’s a good idea to keep a couple of very different ones under the sink.

Overall, the answer to why club soda works when it works is probably similar to the age-old question of whether hot water freezes faster than cold water. First a nice, controlled experiment is necessary to show that it¿s true, and then a lot more work is required to figure out why. All in all, it¿s probably just as much fun to let go of it scientifically and happily compare your theories with those of your friends over a glass of red wine.
