Homework Help for 4th Grade Math Students

In 4th grade, students learn new math skills in areas like number operations, measurement and geometry. Read on for homework help with 4th grade math concepts!

Help with 4th Grade Math

Factors

Factors are the numbers you can multiply together to get a product. For instance, one and two are factors of two because 1 x 2 = 2. The number 12 has one, two, three, four, six and 12 as its factors, since 1 x 12 = 12, 2 x 6 = 12 and 3 x 4 = 12.

Multiples

You can think of multiples as the opposite, or inverse. of factors. A number’s multiples are all of the numbers that are divisible by it. To find a number’s multiples, just multiply it by each whole number, starting with one. For example, the first few multiples of three are three, six, nine and 12, since 1 x 3 = 3, 2 x 3 = 6, 3 x 3 = 9 and 4 x 3 = 12.

Metric Measurement

The metric system of measurement is another key 4th grade math concept. The basic units for measuring length are meters (m). For smaller items, you can use centimeters (cm), which are equal to 1/100 of a meter. Kilometers, which are used to measure longer distances, are equal to 1,000 meters.

The main unit for measuring mass is the gram (g), but kilograms (kg) are used for heavier items. One kilogram is equal to 1,000 grams.

You can use these equivalencies to convert between different units of measure. For instance, since one kilometer equals 1,000 meters, four kilometers equals 4,000 meters. Likewise, 3,000 grams equals three kilograms, since 1,000 grams equals one kilogram.

Classifying Shapes

In 4th grade geometry, you’ll classify shapes based on two important characteristics: right angles and parallel lines. Right angles are angles formed by two perpendicular lines, and they measure 90 degrees. Two lines are parallel if they are the same distance apart at every point.

You’ll classify a 4-sided shape as a trapezoid if it has two parallel sides and no right angles. If a shape has two sets of parallel sides and four right angles, then it’s a rectangle. A 4-sided shape with two sets of parallel sides and no right angles is a parallelogram. and a triangle that includes a right angle is a right triangle.

Symmetry

You’ll also learn about lines of symmetry in 4th grade math. These lines divide a shape into two identical parts. Some shapes, like squares, have many lines of symmetry. Others, like trapezoids, only have one line of symmetry. Parallelograms are an example of a shape with no lines of symmetry.

Sites That Answer Math Questions Online

Posted February 15, 2013 in Reference Material Updated October 2, 2015

Mathematics is often one of the most challenging subjects for a student to master. To keep students on track, many teachers provide students with both instruction and guided practice in the classroom, as well as assignments that must be completed at home and turned in the next day.

However, when students go home to work on assignments, they no longer have access to the teacher for answers to questions or additional support. Fortunately, plenty of websites are available that allow students to ask a math question online. Here are several of the most popular websites.

TutorVista

TutorVista is aimed at students who are struggling in math class and need additional help or practice on homework problems. Student visitors to this site can connect with a live tutor immediately for help with math problems or assistance in understanding a difficult topic. Other beneficial aspects of the TutorVista site include:

  • Using live chat to communicate with the available math tutors
  • A virtual whiteboard space where students can draw, write and share ideas with the tutor
  • An easy navigation sidebar for students to use to select the lesson area where they need help

TutorVista charges by the hour. Students can get a discount by purchasing one-month or three-month unlimited tutoring packages.

Basic-Mathematics

Basic-Mathematics is aimed at elementary-level students with a main focus in algebra and geometry problems. Many games and puzzles await younger students who want additional help in a fun and engaging way. Users can explore various sections within the website such as:

  • A math test-preparation section that generates a sample test that can be taken and scored
  • A section on solving math word problems with walk-through solutions
  • A complete list of topics that can be selected to display definitions and graphics

On this site, students can pose any math question to a pool of experts. Basic-Mathematics.com does not charge a set price to answer questions. Instead, students can set the price of their question upon submission. A math expert will then answer the question within 10 minutes. If the student is satisfied with the answer, he or she must pay the price named when the question was submitted. If the student isn’t satisfied, he or she won’t be required to pay.

Algebra

This site offers nearly 2,000 active mathematics tutors who are available to answer questions. According to the website, tutors are able to answer more than half of all questions posed. Asking questions and receiving answers is free, which makes the experience all that more engaging. Students can even search through the database of recently answered questions before asking their own question.

Algebra.com covers various algebra and algebra-related topics such as:

No matter how well teachers present subject matter in the classroom, students sometimes need help completing their homework or comprehending a difficult topic. By accessing this website and posing questions to a qualified math expert or tutor, students can replicate the classroom environment and resolve any gaps in their understanding.

WebMath

WebMath is an interactive and educational site that allows students to select the area they need help from various subject and grade levels. Students can select different topics from an extensive drop-down menu or use the guided tabs at the top of the page to navigate to the appropriate topic.

The many features of this website include:

  • Easy navigation to desired concepts
  • Step-by-step solutions
  • Definitions provided for each selected concept

This website is great for any math student as it holds a variety of lessons and problems from addition and rounding to more complicated topics such as trigonometric expressions and derivatives.

Problems to be solved are entered into a resizable text box. Users can input special symbols and expressions. The “Show” button will display the problem in mathematical format and can then be edited.

Users can also select from a list of example problems to see problems that have already been entered by other visitors. Some of the examples include:

  • algebra concepts and expressions
  • points, lines and line segments
  • simplifying polynomials
  • factoring polynomials
  • linear equations
  • absolute value expressions and equations
  • radical expressions and equations
  • rational expressions and equations

A search feature helps users narrow the selections to find the desired equation.

The free account in Mathway will display the problem, answer and work. An upgraded account will allow users to see the step-by-step path to the solution.

Cymath

Cymath provides an easier and user-friendly way to get solutions to math problems from various grade levels. This website shows all of the answers in step-by-step formulas allowing students to click on the provided references if there is any confusion.

6 Homework Help Apps Students Will Love

As high school students get ready to head back to school, and college students pack up all their worldly belongings and return to campus to start a new semester, it’s an appropriate time to delve into the amazing world of smartphone and tablet apps .

Here are six free and inexpensive apps that will help make you a better student and save precious time in the process.

No, the iHomework app does not do your homework for you; if it did it would sell for a lot more than $1.99. Instead, it allows you to stay organized and on top of your assignments through a handy calendar function that allows you to enter class times, homework assignments and study sessions. The app also lets you set reminders so you never forget what assignments and reading you need to complete. For example, if you have a class on Tuesday and need to read two chapters of your textbook by Monday night, the app will send you a reminder on the day of your choosing so you can stay ahead of the game. ($1.99 for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)

No longer will you have to flip through a math textbook hoping to find the right formula. The iFormulas app is for students taking a math class and need help remembering which formula to plug into the equation. Essentially, the app lists and categorizes hundreds of math formulas and allows you to customize your options so you can add your favorite formulas for quick retrieval. (Free for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)

Similar to the iHomework app, the Studious app allows you to use your smartphone to quickly and easily keep track of all your assignments and upcoming tests. What differentiates the app is a feature called timetable exchange. Essentially, this allows you to sync your schedule so you can easily coordinate study sessions with fellow students and friends. ($1.99 for iPhone, iPad, Android)

The SparkNotes app is a great way to get free study guides directly on your mobile device. Popular study guides include literature, poetry, philosophy, Shakespeare and short stories. If you need some extra help trying to understand a particular character or story twist, SparkNotes is a beautiful thing. The app lets you download study guides so you can still access them when you are offline. It also includes an option to check-in and share your current location with friends so you can easily start a study group. (Free for iPhone, iPad, Android)

The PocketCAS is a free graphing calculator for Apple devices. For those familiar with Texas Instruments products, the features of the PocketCAS are comparable to the TI-89 model. The app has the following mathematical capabilities: 2-D plots, 3-D plots, calculus, linear algebra and scripting to name just a few. The interface is user-friendly and intuitive, and the app is often updated with new features, graphs and bug fixes. If you are looking for a solid graphing calculator this semester, give this app a try before you spend money on an expensive physical calculator. (Free for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)

The My Gradebook app is easy to use and customizable. Essentially, the app allows you to track your assignments so you never have to guess what your current grade might be.
