The only accounts where savings rates are improving

11 May 2016 • 10:59am

A s savings rates continue to tumble only one type of account has emerged as enjoying an increase in rates: the regular savings accounts, often made available alongside current accounts.

The average variable regular saver paid 1.64pc in December, according to Moneyfacts, a data firm. Now it pays a slightly higher rate of 1.68pc. This is still below the 1.72pc rate available 12 months ago.

R egular savers allow customers to put away a limited amount each month – usually between £25 and £300. Both variable and fixed regular savers offer a better return than the top easy access – RCI Bank offers 1.45pc.

Top regular savings deals pay up to 6pc

First Direct and M S Bank both pay 6pc, although customers must hold a current account * to be eligible.

Customers have to be in a position where they can pay in regularly and not make withdrawals. Otherwise they will lose out Charlotte Nelson, Moneyfacts

F irst Direct allows savers to deposit between £25 and £300 per month for 12 months. Customers who pay in the maximum could earn £117 interest in a year.

The maximum monthly payment into the M S Bank account is £250 for the first 12 months which would yield £96. For more regular saving options, see our guide.

First Direct’s regular saver offers a better return than the popular high interest current accounts currently available as it allows customers to pay in more.

TSB’s Classic Plus account * pays 5pc but only on balances up to £2,000. This would deliver £100 at the end of the year.

However, First Direct’s account comes with restrictions – as do many regular savings accounts.

Customers are typically limited as to how much they can pay in and are not usually allowed to make withdrawals during the 12 month term. If they do, they can lose the high interest rate. Customers face 30 minutes of questioning to open an accoun t, as Telegraph Money has reported.

A season of cuts

The rate increase on regular savings accounts may be slight, but it’s the only area of rising rates in the market.

The following table shows the pattern of rate cuts applying to different types of accounts in recent months.

F ixed rate bonds have been hit hard – 564 cuts have been made since last July.

Isa rates have also fallen. Just last week, Halifax cut the rate on its market-leading Help to Buy Isa from 4pc to 2.5pc – the biggest cut we have seen recently.

Charlotte Nelson, financial expert at Moneyfacts, suggested the reason regular savings accounts have not suffered the same fate as the rest of the market is because they are do not make up a large part of the savings market.

She said: “It looks good for a bank or building society to offer an account that pays 6pc – but there aren’t very many on the market. There also aren’t that many people who would be able to fulfill the criteria.

“Banks know this so can therefore offer top rates. They know customers have to be in a position where they can pay in regularly and not make withdrawals. Otherwise they will lose out.”

Ms Nelson suggested there are some regular savers that are more flexible and it is worth shopping around.

For example, the Nottingham pays 3.1pc and is easy access. Customers can pay in between £10 and £250 a month.
