The experimenter asks all of you, one at a time, to choose which of the three lines on the right card matches the length of the line on the left card. The task is repeated several times with different cards. On some occasions the other “subjects” unanimously choose the wrong line. It is clear to you that they are wrong, but they have all given the same answer.

To Asch’s surprise, 37 of the 50 subjects conformed themselves to the ‘obviously erroneous’ answers given by the other group members at least once, and 14 of them conformed on more than 6 of the ‘staged’ trials. When faced with a unanimous wrong answer by the other group members, the mean subject conformed on 4 of the ‘staged’ trials.

Why did most subjects conform so readily? When they were interviewed after the experiment, most of them said that they did not really believe their conforming answers, but had gone along with the group for fear of being ridiculed or thought “peculiar.” A few of them said that they really did believe the group’s answers were correct.

He found that the subjects conformed to a group of 3 or 4 as readily as they did to a larger group.

However, the subjects conformed much less if they had an “ally” In some of his experiments, Asch instructed one of the confederates to give correct answers. In the presence of this nonconformist, the real subjects conformed only one fourth as much as they did in the original experiment. There were several reasons: First, the real subject observed that the majority did not ridicule the dissenter for his answers. Second, the dissenter’s answers made the subject more certain that the majority was wrong. Third, the real subject now experienced social pressure from the dissenter as well as from the majority. Many of the real subjects later reported that they wanted to be like their nonconformist partner (the similarity principle again). Apparently, it is difficult to be a minority of one but not so difficult to be part of a minority of two.

50 Common Interview Questions And Answers

Review these typical interview questions and think about how you would answer them. Read the questions listed; you will also find some strategy suggestions with it.

The most often asked question in interviews. You need to have a short statement prepared in your mind. Be careful that it does not sound rehearsed. Limit it to work-related items unless instructed otherwise. Talk about things you have done and jobs you have held that relate to the position you are interviewing for. Start with the item farthest back and work up to the present.

Stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Never refer to a major problem with

management and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers or the organization. If you do, you will be the one looking bad. Keep smiling and talk about leaving for a positive reason such as an opportunity, a chance to do something special or other forward-looking reasons.

Speak about specifics that relate to the position you are applying for. If you do not have specific experience, get as close as you can.

You should always answer yes and briefly explain why. A good explanation is that you have set goals, and you have met some and are on track to achieve the others.

Be prepared with a quote or two from co-workers. Either a specific statement or a

paraphrase will work. Jill Clark, a co-worker at Smith Company, always said I was the

Be honest but do not spend a lot of time in this area. Keep the focus on this job and what you can do for this organization. Anything else is a distraction.

This may take some thought and certainly, should be based on the research you have done on the organization. Sincerity is extremely important here and will easily be sensed. Relate it to your long-term career goals.

Be aware of the policy on relatives working for the organization. This can affect your answer even though they asked about friends not relatives. Be careful to mention a friend only if they are well thought of.

A loaded question. A nasty little game that you will probably lose if you answer first. So, do not answer it. Instead, say something like, That’s a tough question. Can you tell me the range for this position? In most cases, the interviewer, taken off guard, will tell you. If not, say that it can depend on the details of the job. Then give a wide range.

You are, of course, a team player. Be sure to have examples ready. Specifics that show you often perform for the good of the team rather than for yourself are good evidence of your team attitude. Do not brag, just say it in a matter-of-fact tone. This is a key point.

Specifics here are not good. Something like this should work: I’d like it to be a long time. Or- as long as we both feel I’m doing a good job.

This is serious. Do not make light of it or in any way seem like you like to fire people. At the same time, you will do it when it is the right thing to do. When it comes to the organization versus the individual who has created a harmful situation, you will protect the organization.

Remember firing is not the same as layoff or reduction in force.

The interviewer is not looking for a long or flowery dissertation here. Do you have strong feelings that the job gets done? Yes. That’s the type of answer that works best here. Short and positive, showing a benefit to the organization.

Answer yes if you would. But since you need to work, this is the type of work you prefer. Do not say yes if you do not mean it.

If you have not, say no. If you have, be honest, brief and avoid saying negative things about the people or organization involved.

You should be anxious for this question. It gives you a chance to highlight your best points as they relate to the position being discussed. Give a little advance thought to this relationship.

Point out how your assets meet what the organization needs. Do not mention any other

candidates to make a comparison.

Have a good one ready. Be sure and use a suggestion that was accepted and was then

considered successful. One related to the type of work applied for is a real plus.

This is a trap question. Think real hard but fail to come up with anything that irritates you.

A short statement that you seem to get along with folks is great.

Numerous answers are good, just stay positive. A few good examples:

Stay away from a specific job. You cannot win. If you say the job you are contending for is it, you strain credibility. If you say another job is it, you plant the suspicion that you will be dissatisfied with this position if hired. The best is to stay genetic and say something like: A job where I love the work, like the people, can contribute and can’t wait to get to work.

Give several reasons and include skills, experience and interest.

Do not be trivial. It would take disloyalty to the organization, violence or lawbreaking to get you to object. Minor objections will label you as a whiner.

Money is always important, but the work is the most important. There is no better answer.

Loyalty, Energy, Positive attitude, Leadership, Team player, Expertise, Initiative, Patience, Hard work, Creativity, Problem solver

Biggest trap of all. This is a test to see if you will speak ill of your boss. If you fall for it and tell about a problem with a former boss, you may well below the interview right there. Stay positive and develop a poor memory about any trouble with a supervisor.

Don’t get trivial or negative. Safe areas are few but can include:

Not enough of a challenge. You were laid off in a reduction Company did not win a contract, which would have given you more responsibility.

You may say that you thrive under certain types of pressure. Give an example that relates to the type of position applied for.

Probably this one. Do not give fuel to the suspicion that you may want another job more than this one.

I had a very positive experience with a therapist during my youth. My father suffered from post- trammatic stress syndrome from the war and from being discharged from the army. He was unable to cope with civilian life. As a result, our entire family struggled–especially my mom. It wasn’t until we received ongoing couseling from a caring and qualified psychologist, when I was about 10 years old, that things started to get better. Without that help, I don’t think we would have made it. I owe a lot to this professional. More importantly, I’ve seen the powerful effect therapy and psychological interventions can have on individuals, families and society as a whole. I decided to specialize my studies in Child Psychology simply because I hate to see kids struggle. Additionally, I feel that helping our kids to lead healthing and productive childhoods is the first step to eliminating mental health issues in adulthood.

For the past three years I’ve worked as a therapist at the St. Luke’s Catholic School for Children. While I’ve found the work fulfilling, recently I’ve had a strong desire to transition into a clincial setting where I’m assisting clientele with serious emotional, behavioral, and mental disorders. I’m finding that my knowledge and skill set are not where they need to be in order to be effective in this capacity of clinical psychology so I’ve been attending post-graduate courses in abnormal psychology at the University of Chicago in the evenings to become more versed in the treatments and therapies that are most effective for treating individuals with these conditions.

When I studied clinical psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology I focused my studies on early childhood behavioral development and cognition. For the last year I’ve worked as a school psychologist with a local district helping kids address negative emotional and behavioral issues affecting their ability to interact socially and progress academically. As a byproduct of my interaction with children, teachers, parents and other administors, I’ve found that I’m very effective at conducting family and group therapies–and that I thoroughly enjoy the work. That’s one of the reasons I’m so interested in your organization and position you have available.

The experimenter asks all of you, one at a time, to choose which of the three lines on the right card matches the length of the line on the left card. The task is repeated several times with different cards. On some occasions the other “subjects” unanimously choose the wrong line. It is clear to you that they are wrong, but they have all given the same answer.

To Asch’s surprise, 37 of the 50 subjects conformed themselves to the ‘obviously erroneous’ answers given by the other group members at least once, and 14 of them conformed on more than 6 of the ‘staged’ trials. When faced with a unanimous wrong answer by the other group members, the mean subject conformed on 4 of the ‘staged’ trials.

Why did most subjects conform so readily? When they were interviewed after the experiment, most of them said that they did not really believe their conforming answers, but had gone along with the group for fear of being ridiculed or thought “peculiar.” A few of them said that they really did believe the group’s answers were correct.

He found that the subjects conformed to a group of 3 or 4 as readily as they did to a larger group.

However, the subjects conformed much less if they had an “ally” In some of his experiments, Asch instructed one of the confederates to give correct answers. In the presence of this nonconformist, the real subjects conformed only one fourth as much as they did in the original experiment. There were several reasons: First, the real subject observed that the majority did not ridicule the dissenter for his answers. Second, the dissenter’s answers made the subject more certain that the majority was wrong. Third, the real subject now experienced social pressure from the dissenter as well as from the majority. Many of the real subjects later reported that they wanted to be like their nonconformist partner (the similarity principle again). Apparently, it is difficult to be a minority of one but not so difficult to be part of a minority of two.

Hands and feet get cold, because blood is directed away from the extremities to the large muscles in order to prepare for fighting or fleeing.

Hans Selye [3] first popularized the concept of stress in the 1950s. Selye theorized that all individuals respond to all types of threatening situations in the same manner, and he called this the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). Psychology answersHe claimed that, in addition to SNS arousal, other bodily systems such as the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland may be involved in a response to threat. For example, chemicals such as epinephrine (adrenaline) may serve to focus the body s attention just on immediate self-preservation by inhibiting such functions as digestion, reproduction, tissue repair, and immune responses. Ultimately, as the threat wanes, Selye suggested, body functions return to normal, allowing the body to focus on healing and growth again. But if the threat is prolonged and chronic, the SNS arousal never gets turned off, and health can be impaired. With a continuously suppressed immune system, for example, a person would be more vulnerable than usual to infection which is one explanation of why some individuals get sick so often. [4]

And, regardless of whether Selye was right or not, psychology, as well as medicine and popular culture, have accepted the concept of stress as an unpleasant fact of life.

Reducing Physiological Arousal

Physiological arousal can be uncomfortable and distracting in situations that might feel threatening but don t involve an actual threat. Fortunately, this sort of arousal can be reduced by practicing some form of relaxation. A basic relaxation technique such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) consciously helps muscles to relax, and, because muscle tension is one of the triggers of arousal, the PMR process, by decreasing muscle tension, essentially tells the body that the perceived danger is over and that systems can return to normal. More advanced forms of relaxation, such as autogenics and prayer, cause muscle relaxation through mental imagery.

Hence these forms of relaxation don t just help to turn off the physiological symptoms of arousal in the imagination they can actually change one s view of change, so to speak, so that a change isn t perceived as a threat in the first place. This is why the benefits of advanced relaxation techniques extend beyond their physiological benefits and can lead to enhanced performance, greater self-esteem, and serenity of mind.

Given what we know about the physiology of arousal due to perceived threats, and given what we know about relaxation techniques to diminish that arousal, what can be said about the concept of stress ?

Well, actually, not much.

A person could, for example, experience a job loss and respond to its perceived threat not with healthy problem-solving but with anger. This anger may be conscious or unconscious, but as long as it persists a state of physiological arousal will be maintained. In addition, perhaps this unfortunate person will experience a Major Depressive Episode or will develop an Anxiety Disorder.

In traditional terms it could be said that this person is under intense stress. In fact, because of Selye s influence, psychology and medicine have tended to regard stress as if it were some thing that could destroy our health and happiness even against our wills.

But it could just as well be said that the person in the example has simply failed to accept change in a healthy, adaptive manner.

So maybe stress isn t any thing at all. Maybe it s just a descriptive term that our culture uses to normalize unconscious anger, a fear of love, a lack of forgiveness, a desperate clinging to a vain identity, and an absence of a spiritual life. Maybe stress is just a convenient myth a fraud in its own right to shift responsibility for life away from ourselves and onto something so vague that everyone can love to hate it.

But those who accept the discipline of a relaxation technique are at least taking a positive step not to fighting stress, but toward living responsible lives.

Mindfulness in general means to be fully aware of what you are doing, while you are doing it. This means, for example, that while eating breakfast you would be mindful only of the various sensory experiences of eating the food; you wouldn t be thinking of that upcoming business meeting.

Mindfulness meditation is a term often used in the practice of psychology so that meditation can be taught without seeming to have any religious implications. Many meditation techniques, such as centering prayer, Zen Buddhism, and even Transcendental Meditation, are quite similar to the idea of mindfulness meditation, and yet there is nothing religious about any of them. They are all nothing more than psychological techniques to achieve some form of relaxed, focused mind.

Mindfulness can be relaxing because if you focus just on the one thing that occupies you in the moment you don t have to deal with the anxiety of future concerns. Mindfulness meditation draws on this realization and allows you to relax by focusing just on your body in its immediate surroundings: heartbeat, breathing, environmental sounds, etc. The idea is to notice these things without judging or interpreting them. Random thoughts, for example, are noticed as transitory things that simply come and go. If you don t focus on them, they soon go away as easily as they came, and so they don t bother you or cause SNS arousal. Accordingly, mindfulness meditation is a very passive process.

There is, however, a problem with mindfulness meditation: since it s a passive process, you cannot stay relaxed unless you do nothing but meditate.

The explanation for this odd fact can be found in the traditional [5] Performance-Stress Relationship Curve, which looks like an inverted U . At zero arousal, you have zero performance which means that you re either sleeping or meditating. At maximum arousal, you also have zero performance here, you re incapacitated by panic. So, curiously enough, the only way to have any performance is to have some arousal.

This curve idea is really just common sense about physiological arousal, and it may not represent anything particularly scientific about what stress may or may not be.

This means that if you are performing any activity with a moderate to high level of arousal, such as driving a car, being in a state of mindfulness does not in itself reduce SNS stimulation. (Remember that mindfulness while sitting quietly can be relaxing because sitting quietly is not inherently threatening.) Therefore, although mindfulness can help to increase performance because it increases focus and awareness to have optimal performance you also need to use an active form of relaxation, such as progressive muscle relaxation, autogenics, or prayer, to keep SNS arousal from becoming excessive.

A Lesson from Aviation

A pilot in charge of flying an aircraft is called the pilot in command (PIC). All pilot training involves coping with equipment failures and other emergencies. Emergencies can happen no matter how well-prepared and competent the pilot may be.

When an emergency occurs, physiological changes resulting from the threat to life favor strong surges of energy in the large muscles, and they foster a narrow focus of attention on the blood rage necessary for survival.

In a crisis, however, a pilot needs precise hand and foot movements not gross physical strength and he or she needs clear thinking not the tunnel vision of rage. Consequently, the natural survival skills triggered by an emergency can actually contribute to a pilot losing control of the aircraft.

Therefore, in order to manage SNS arousal in an emergency, a pilot or any person needs a third option, a sort of unnatural option: not fleeing the problem, and not fighting the problem either, but taking command of it. In an emergency, a person should be pilot in command of his or her body as one essential step in coping with the overall problem.

    The experimenter asks all of you, one at a time, to choose which of the three lines on the right card matches the length of the line on the left card. The task is repeated several times with different cards. On some occasions the other “subjects” unanimously choose the wrong line. It is clear to you that they are wrong, but they have all given the same answer.

    To Asch’s surprise, 37 of the 50 subjects conformed themselves to the ‘obviously erroneous’ answers given by the other group members at least once, and 14 of them conformed on more than 6 of the ‘staged’ trials. When faced with a unanimous wrong answer by the other group members, the mean subject conformed on 4 of the ‘staged’ trials.

    Why did most subjects conform so readily? When they were interviewed after the experiment, most of them said that they did not really believe their conforming answers, but had gone along with the group for fear of being ridiculed or thought “peculiar.” A few of them said that they really did believe the group’s answers were correct.

    He found that the subjects conformed to a group of 3 or 4 as readily as they did to a larger group.

    However, the subjects conformed much less if they had an “ally” In some of his experiments, Asch instructed one of the confederates to give correct answers. In the presence of this nonconformist, the real subjects conformed only one fourth as much as they did in the original experiment. There were several reasons: First, the real subject observed that the majority did not ridicule the dissenter for his answers. Second, the dissenter’s answers made the subject more certain that the majority was wrong. Third, the real subject now experienced social pressure from the dissenter as well as from the majority. Many of the real subjects later reported that they wanted to be like their nonconformist partner (the similarity principle again). Apparently, it is difficult to be a minority of one but not so difficult to be part of a minority of two.

    50 Common Interview Questions And Answers

    Review these typical interview questions and think about how you would answer them. Read the questions listed; you will also find some strategy suggestions with it.

    The most often asked question in interviews. You need to have a short statement prepared in your mind. Be careful that it does not sound rehearsed. Limit it to work-related items unless instructed otherwise. Talk about things you have done and jobs you have held that relate to the position you are interviewing for. Start with the item farthest back and work up to the present.

    Stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Never refer to a major problem with

    management and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers or the organization. If you do, you will be the one looking bad. Keep smiling and talk about leaving for a positive reason such as an opportunity, a chance to do something special or other forward-looking reasons.

    Speak about specifics that relate to the position you are applying for. If you do not have specific experience, get as close as you can.

    You should always answer yes and briefly explain why. A good explanation is that you have set goals, and you have met some and are on track to achieve the others.

    Be prepared with a quote or two from co-workers. Either a specific statement or a

    paraphrase will work. Jill Clark, a co-worker at Smith Company, always said I was the

    hardest workers she had ever known. It is as powerful as Jill having said it at the interview herself.

    This question is one reason to do some research on the organization before the interview. Find out where they have been and where they are going. What are the current issues and who are the major players?

    Try to include improvement activities that relate to the job. A wide variety of activities can be mentioned as positive self-improvement. Have some good ones handy to mention.

    Be honest but do not spend a lot of time in this area. Keep the focus on this job and what you can do for this organization. Anything else is a distraction.

    This may take some thought and certainly, should be based on the research you have done on the organization. Sincerity is extremely important here and will easily be sensed. Relate it to your long-term career goals.

    Be aware of the policy on relatives working for the organization. This can affect your answer even though they asked about friends not relatives. Be careful to mention a friend only if they are well thought of.

    A loaded question. A nasty little game that you will probably lose if you answer first. So, do not answer it. Instead, say something like, That’s a tough question. Can you tell me the range for this position? In most cases, the interviewer, taken off guard, will tell you. If not, say that it can depend on the details of the job. Then give a wide range.

    You are, of course, a team player. Be sure to have examples ready. Specifics that show you often perform for the good of the team rather than for yourself are good evidence of your team attitude. Do not brag, just say it in a matter-of-fact tone. This is a key point.

    Specifics here are not good. Something like this should work: I’d like it to be a long time. Or- as long as we both feel I’m doing a good job.

    This is serious. Do not make light of it or in any way seem like you like to fire people. At the same time, you will do it when it is the right thing to do. When it comes to the organization versus the individual who has created a harmful situation, you will protect the organization.

    Remember firing is not the same as layoff or reduction in force.

    The interviewer is not looking for a long or flowery dissertation here. Do you have strong feelings that the job gets done? Yes. That’s the type of answer that works best here. Short and positive, showing a benefit to the organization.

    Answer yes if you would. But since you need to work, this is the type of work you prefer. Do not say yes if you do not mean it.

    If you have not, say no. If you have, be honest, brief and avoid saying negative things about the people or organization involved.

    You should be anxious for this question. It gives you a chance to highlight your best points as they relate to the position being discussed. Give a little advance thought to this relationship.

    Point out how your assets meet what the organization needs. Do not mention any other

    candidates to make a comparison.

    Have a good one ready. Be sure and use a suggestion that was accepted and was then

    considered successful. One related to the type of work applied for is a real plus.

    This is a trap question. Think real hard but fail to come up with anything that irritates you.

    A short statement that you seem to get along with folks is great.

    Numerous answers are good, just stay positive. A few good examples:

    Your ability to prioritize, Your problem-solving skills, Your ability to work under pressure, Your ability to focus on projects, Your professional expertise, Your leadership skills, Yourpositive attitude.

    Stay away from a specific job. You cannot win. If you say the job you are contending for is it, you strain credibility. If you say another job is it, you plant the suspicion that you will be dissatisfied with this position if hired. The best is to stay genetic and say something like: A job where I love the work, like the people, can contribute and can’t wait to get to work.

    Give several reasons and include skills, experience and interest.

    Do not be trivial. It would take disloyalty to the organization, violence or lawbreaking to get you to object. Minor objections will label you as a whiner.

    Money is always important, but the work is the most important. There is no better answer.

    There are numerous good possibilities:

    Loyalty, Energy, Positive attitude, Leadership, Team player, Expertise, Initiative, Patience, Hard work, Creativity, Problem solver

    Biggest trap of all. This is a test to see if you will speak ill of your boss. If you fall for it and tell about a problem with a former boss, you may well below the interview right there. Stay positive and develop a poor memory about any trouble with a supervisor.

    Don’t get trivial or negative. Safe areas are few but can include:

    Not enough of a challenge. You were laid off in a reduction Company did not win a contract, which would have given you more responsibility.

    You may say that you thrive under certain types of pressure. Give an example that relates to the type of position applied for.

    Probably this one. Do not give fuel to the suspicion that you may want another job more than this one.

    This is a personal trait that only you can say, but good examples are:

    Challenge, Achievement, Recognition

    This is up to you. Be totally honest.

    Several ways are good measures:

    You set high standards for yourself and meet them. Your outcomes are a success.Your boss tell you that you are successful

    You should be clear on this with your family prior to the interview if you think there is a chance it may come up. Do not say yes just to get the job if the real answer is no. This can create a lot of problems later on in your career. Be honest at this point and save yourself future grief.

    This is a straight loyalty and dedication question. Do not worry about the deep ethical and philosophical implications. Just say yes.

    Try to avoid labels. Some of the more common labels, like progressive, salesman or

    consensus, can have several meanings or descriptions depending on which management

    expert you listen to. The situational style is safe, because it says you will manage according to the situation, instead of one size fits all.

    Here you have to come up with something or you strain credibility. Make it small, well intentioned mistake with a positive lesson learned. An example would be working too far ahead of colleagues on a project and thus throwing coordination off.

    Trick question. If you know about blind spots, they are no longer blind spots. Do not reveal any personal areas of concern here. Let them do their own discovery on your bad points. Do not hand it to them.

    Be careful to mention traits that are needed and that you have.

    Regardless of your qualifications, state that you are very well qualified for the position.

    First, if you have experience that the interviewer does not know about, bring that up: Then, point out (if true) that you are a hard working quick learner.

    Be generic and positive. Safe qualities are knowledgeable, a sense of humor, fair, loyal to subordinates and holder of high standards. All bosses think they have these traits.

    Pick a specific incident. Concentrate on your problem solving technique and not the dispute you settled.

    Be honest. If you are comfortable in different roles, point that out.

    Emphasize benefits to the organization. Things like, determination to get the job done and work hard but enjoy your work are good.

    Be sure that you refer to something that was beyond your control. Show acceptance and no negative feelings.

    Talk about having fun by accomplishing something for the organization.

    Always have some questions prepared. Questions prepared where you will be an asset to

    the organization are good. How soon will I be able to be productive? and What type of

    projects will I be able to assist on? are examples.

Revision at the same time needs to be an active process, test yourself to exercise what you’ve just learnt. It is easier said than done, but it will all be worth while when you get the grade you want at the end. An important issue with this particular subject is to also take into consideration information like experiments – these are the things that will get you the top marks. Once you know a resonable amount on a module, you can then attempt the examination papers. It’s vital to prtactice them over and over again. There are plenty of past exam papers to go through to test the material you have learnt. The format will also be exactly the same as the real examination paper, so having done them more than once, you’ll be familiar with what to expect and where. Also practicing the papers is an important aid to revision, knowing how to structure the correct answers is also imperative. The longer, essay based questions is where you can demonstrate your learning with theories, evidence and criticism. Also, if you consult the model answers, you’ll find the top answers have all of these things which are displayed in a well-structured format – this is what the examiner wants to see. So overall, to get the best marks: don’t leave it too late, revise well and practice well.

A possble option is to also consider approaching your teacher and getting perhaps a small get together where he/she can further develop on the points you can’t understand.     I had a very positive experience with a therapist during my youth. My father suffered from post- trammatic stress syndrome from the war and from being discharged from the army. He was unable to cope with civilian life. As a result, our entire family struggled–especially my mom. It wasn’t until we received ongoing couseling from a caring and qualified psychologist, when I was about 10 years old, that things started to get better. Without that help, I don’t think we would have made it. I owe a lot to this professional. More importantly, I’ve seen the powerful effect therapy and psychological interventions can have on individuals, families and society as a whole. I decided to specialize my studies in Child Psychology simply because I hate to see kids struggle. Additionally, I feel that helping our kids to lead healthing and productive childhoods is the first step to eliminating mental health issues in adulthood.

    For the past three years I’ve worked as a therapist at the St. Luke’s Catholic School for Children. While I’ve found the work fulfilling, recently I’ve had a strong desire to transition into a clincial setting where I’m assisting clientele with serious emotional, behavioral, and mental disorders. I’m finding that my knowledge and skill set are not where they need to be in order to be effective in this capacity of clinical psychology so I’ve been attending post-graduate courses in abnormal psychology at the University of Chicago in the evenings to become more versed in the treatments and therapies that are most effective for treating individuals with these conditions.

    To Asch’s surprise, 37 of the 50 subjects conformed themselves to the ‘obviously erroneous’ answers given by the other group members at least once, and 14 of them conformed on more than 6 of the ‘staged’ trials. When faced with a unanimous wrong answer by the other group members, the mean subject conformed on 4 of the ‘staged’ trials.

When they were interviewed after the experiment, most of them said that they did not really believe their conforming answers, but had gone along with the group for fear of being ridiculed or thought “peculiar.” A few of them said that they really did believe the group’s answers were correct.

    Hans Selye [3] first popularized the concept of stress in the 1950s. Selye theorized that all individuals respond to all types of threatening situations in the same manner, and he called this the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). Psychology answersHe claimed that, in addition to SNS arousal, other bodily systems such as the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland may be involved in a response to threat. For example, chemicals such as epinephrine (adrenaline) may serve to focus the body s attention just on immediate self-preservation by inhibiting such functions as digestion, reproduction, tissue repair, and immune responses. Ultimately, as the threat wanes, Selye suggested, body functions return to normal, allowing the body to focus on healing and growth again. But if the threat is prolonged and chronic, the SNS arousal never gets turned off, and health can be impaired. With a continuously suppressed immune system, for example, a person would be more vulnerable than usual to infection which is one explanation of why some individuals get sick so often. [4]

    And, regardless of whether Selye was right or not, psychology, as well as medicine and popular culture, have accepted the concept of stress as an unpleasant fact of life.

    Reducing Physiological Arousal

    Physiological arousal can be uncomfortable and distracting in situations that might feel threatening but don t involve an actual threat. Fortunately, this sort of arousal can be reduced by practicing some form of relaxation. A basic relaxation technique such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) consciously helps muscles to relax, and, because muscle tension is one of the triggers of arousal, the PMR process, by decreasing muscle tension, essentially tells the body that the perceived danger is over and that systems can return to normal. More advanced forms of relaxation, such as autogenics and prayer, cause muscle relaxation through mental imagery.

    Hence these forms of relaxation don t just help to turn off the physiological symptoms of arousal in the imagination they can actually change one s view of change, so to speak, so that a change isn t perceived as a threat in the first place. This is why the benefits of advanced relaxation techniques extend beyond their physiological benefits and can lead to enhanced performance, greater self-esteem, and serenity of mind.

    Given what we know about the physiology of arousal due to perceived threats, and given what we know about relaxation techniques to diminish that arousal, what can be said about the concept of stress ?

    Well, actually, not much.

    A person could, for example, experience a job loss and respond to its perceived threat not with healthy problem-solving but with anger. This anger may be conscious or unconscious, but as long as it persists a state of physiological arousal will be maintained. In addition, perhaps this unfortunate person will experience a Major Depressive Episode or will develop an Anxiety Disorder.

    In traditional terms it could be said that this person is under intense stress. In fact, because of Selye s influence, psychology and medicine have tended to regard stress as if it were some thing that could destroy our health and happiness even against our wills.

    But it could just as well be said that the person in the example has simply failed to accept change in a healthy, adaptive manner.

    So maybe stress isn t any thing at all. Maybe it s just a descriptive term that our culture uses to normalize unconscious anger, a fear of love, a lack of forgiveness, a desperate clinging to a vain identity, and an absence of a spiritual life. Maybe stress is just a convenient myth a fraud in its own right to shift responsibility for life away from ourselves and onto something so vague that everyone can love to hate it.

    But those who accept the discipline of a relaxation technique are at least taking a positive step not to fighting stress, but toward living responsible lives.

    Mindfulness in general means to be fully aware of what you are doing, while you are doing it. This means, for example, that while eating breakfast you would be mindful only of the various sensory experiences of eating the food; you wouldn t be thinking of that upcoming business meeting.

    Mindfulness meditation is a term often used in the practice of psychology so that meditation can be taught without seeming to have any religious implications. Many meditation techniques, such as centering prayer, Zen Buddhism, and even Transcendental Meditation, are quite similar to the idea of mindfulness meditation, and yet there is nothing religious about any of them. They are all nothing more than psychological techniques to achieve some form of relaxed, focused mind.

    Mindfulness can be relaxing because if you focus just on the one thing that occupies you in the moment you don t have to deal with the anxiety of future concerns. Mindfulness meditation draws on this realization and allows you to relax by focusing just on your body in its immediate surroundings: heartbeat, breathing, environmental sounds, etc. The idea is to notice these things without judging or interpreting them. Random thoughts, for example, are noticed as transitory things that simply come and go. If you don t focus on them, they soon go away as easily as they came, and so they don t bother you or cause SNS arousal. Accordingly, mindfulness meditation is a very passive process.

    There is, however, a problem with mindfulness meditation: since it s a passive process, you cannot stay relaxed unless you do nothing but meditate.

    The explanation for this odd fact can be found in the traditional [5] Performance-Stress Relationship Curve, which looks like an inverted U . At zero arousal, you have zero performance which means that you re either sleeping or meditating. At maximum arousal, you also have zero performance here, you re incapacitated by panic. So, curiously enough, the only way to have any performance is to have some arousal.

    This curve idea is really just common sense about physiological arousal, and it may not represent anything particularly scientific about what stress may or may not be.

    This means that if you are performing any activity with a moderate to high level of arousal, such as driving a car, being in a state of mindfulness does not in itself reduce SNS stimulation. (Remember that mindfulness while sitting quietly can be relaxing because sitting quietly is not inherently threatening.) Therefore, although mindfulness can help to increase performance because it increases focus and awareness to have optimal performance you also need to use an active form of relaxation, such as progressive muscle relaxation, autogenics, or prayer, to keep SNS arousal from becoming excessive.

    A Lesson from Aviation

    A pilot in charge of flying an aircraft is called the pilot in command (PIC). All pilot training involves coping with equipment failures and other emergencies. Emergencies can happen no matter how well-prepared and competent the pilot may be.

    When an emergency occurs, physiological changes resulting from the threat to life favor strong surges of energy in the large muscles, and they foster a narrow focus of attention on the blood rage necessary for survival.

    In a crisis, however, a pilot needs precise hand and foot movements not gross physical strength and he or she needs clear thinking not the tunnel vision of rage. Consequently, the natural survival skills triggered by an emergency can actually contribute to a pilot losing control of the aircraft.

    Therefore, in order to manage SNS arousal in an emergency, a pilot or any person needs a third option, a sort of unnatural option: not fleeing the problem, and not fighting the problem either, but taking command of it. In an emergency, a person should be pilot in command of his or her body as one essential step in coping with the overall problem.

    AP Psychology

    This course can help prepare students who wish to continue their social studies education after high school, as well as students who wish to perform exceptionally well on the SAT exam. The level of aptitude in this subject will assist students wishing to excel on the SAT and in college courses.

    While there is no official prerequisite for AP Psychology, it is highly advised that students take a basic psychology course before tackling an AP Psychology course. This will ensure that students are familiar with basic psychology terminology and that they don’t fall behind in class discussion. Students should also make sure that they are prepared for the course load associated with an Advanced Placement Psychology course. Most social studies classes include extensive readings of both textbooks and case studies. Students should be prepared to both read and analyze what they read in order to apply it to the class. They should also be somewhat familiar with general Psychology concepts and terminology before enrolling in an Advanced Placement Psychology class.

    According to the College Board’s website, this course introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Included is a consideration of the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. Major topics include the various perspectives from which psychologists view behavior and mental processes. They range from a study of the brain and child development to personality and psychological disorders. Students also learn about the ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and practice.

    Among the different topics that AP Psychology will cover are:

    • History and Approaches to Psychology, where students will gain an appreciation for the different perspectives that have shaped the development of psychological thought.
    • Research Methods, where students will learn about the different means of obtaining scientific information and how to analyze that information.
    • Biological Bases of Behavior, where students will learn about the relationships between the physiological processes and animal (human) beavior.
    • Sensation and Perception, where student will learn how the body translates different sensations and stimuli into psychological processes within the mind.
    • States of Consciousness, where students will be taught about the difference between different amounts of brain activity and consciousness.
    • Learning, were students will come to understand how humans can learn through different sensory experiences and experiences.
    • Cogntion, where students will be taught how the brain is able to convert sensory information into different kinds of information.
    • Motivation and Emotion, where students will explore the biological and social factors that motivate typical and extreme human behavior.
    • Developmental Psychology, where students will learn how the brain develops over time, and how different experiences may affect the brain’s development.

    Students will also be able to use study notes, study guides, and other various study techniques in conjunction with Psychology textbooks and case studies.

    Students considering taking AP Psychology or any other Advanced Placement course should recognize that taking these classes requires a more serious commitment than other high school courses. Students that commit themselves to their coursework will see a substantial payoff in both their SAT exam scores as well as their college preparedness.

    Students that wish to get accepted into prestigious or highly-selective schools should seriously consider taking AP courses. They not only look outstanding on high school transcripts, but they can also give students an inside look at college courses before graduating from high school. Most importantly, they can assist students in earning college credit while still in high school, saving valuable time and money in the process. They will also help students develop the skills they need to succeed in the rigorous college atmosphere, and give students valuable knowledge that they can use both inside and outside of the classroom.     Devising Research Questions

    What is it that researchers do? They ask and answer questions. The first step toward answering a question is devising an appropriate test (the method). The second part is making the results of the test known this is the task of the research report and poster presentation. But before you can design a test or write a paper, you have to have something you wish research — you need to devise a research question.

    Types of Questions

    There are three basic types of questions that research projects can address:

    1. Descriptive .When a study is designed primarily to describe what is going on or what exists. Public opinion polls that seek only to describe the proportion of people who hold various opinions are primarily descriptive in nature. For instance, if we want to know what percent of the population would vote for a Democratic or a Republican in the next presidential election, we are simply interested in describing something.

    2. Relational .When a study is designed to look at the relationships between two or more variables. A public opinion poll that compares what proportion of males and females say they would vote for a Democratic or a Republican candidate in the next presidential election is essentially studying the relationship between gender and voting preference.

    3. Causal .When a study is designed to determine whether one or more variables (e.g. a program or treatment variable) causes or affects one or more outcome variables. If we did a public opinion poll to try to determine whether a recent political advertising campaign changed voter preferences, we would essentially be studying whether the campaign (cause) changed the proportion of voters who would vote Democratic or Republican (effect).

    The three question types can be viewed as cumulative. That is, a relational study assumes that you can first describe (by measuring or observing) each of the variables you are trying to relate. And, a causal study assumes that you can describe both the cause and effect variables and that you can show that they are related to each other. Causal studies are probably the most demanding of the three.

    A Process for Formulating Questions

    A good Research Question (RQ) is specific enough to be answered, broad enough to be discussed, and significant enough to be of interest to the field. This is not as difficult to create as it sounds! Below are some tips to help you formulate a RQ that is both personally meaningful and researchable.

    A successful RQ has two main parts, a topic and something asked about that topic. The topic comes from your interests as a researcher/thinker (with consideration eventually given to the current interests of your field). The “what about the topic” also comes from your interests but is formulated using the “wh-question words”: who, what, why, when, where, how, how much/often/many. Often, those two steps don t result in a good RQ remember, that a successful RQ is one that is answerable and researchable. So, after determining the topic and some idea of “what about” the topic, do the following: define the nouns and verbs that the reader can t be assumed to know and operationalize the adjectives, adverbs, qualities, or relationships (“qualities” are pieces of language that describe something). Operationalizing a term means to define it so that it can be measured; this often means matching behaviors to ideas/concepts. Now, after this, you should be able to put together a Research Question that is both interesting and researchable. You may still need to narrow it down, but you ve got a solid place to begin.

    Topic: eating disorders

    What about the topic: What causes eating disorders?

    * Define– eating disorders (anorexia nervosa/anorexia bulimia, DSM classification)
    * Operationalize causes. (can I say “causes”? Is it a cause-and-effect relationship? Maybe “influences” is better)

    Research Question: What factors influence eating disorders?

    Can RQ be narrowed? (pretty broad topic, maybe narrow to a specific point such as the beginning of an eating disorder or treatment?)

    Revised Research Question: What factors influence the beginning or development of eating disorders?

    Experimenting with the wh-questions:

    • Why do eating disorders occur?
    • How many kinds of eating disorders are there?
    • Who gets eating disorders?
    • Where do eating orders occur most often (geographical distribution/epidemiological study)?
    • What treatments are available for eating disorders?
    • When do eating disorder start?

    Note. “Binary” questions — those beginning with “do” — are not often good research questions because they only require a “yes/no” answer: “Do men get eating disorders?”. Once you’ve answered that question — which is “yes” and you’ll discover that within 3 minutes of beginning a literature search — what are you going to do? You may have such a question in your head because you don’t know the answer, but once the basic question is answered, you’ll need to form more questions, ex: “How are eating disorders different for men?”. True existence questions only work for a topic that has truly never been researched before or when the existence of a thing is predicted but not proven (for example, the Higgs-Bosun particle in physics).

    4. What is Philip Zimbardo s prison study, and what did it demonstrate?

    The prison study showed how people are influenced by roles. Zimbardo assigned one group of college student volunteers to play the role of prison guards in a simulated prison environment. He provided these students with uniforms, clubs, and whistles and told them to enforce a set of rules in the prison. He assigned another group of students to play the role of prisoners. Zimbardo found that as time went on, some of the guard students became increasingly harsh and domineering, while the prisoner students also internalized their role: some broke down and others rebelled or became passively resigned to the situation.

    Why are children stubborn? Why do some people become addicted to alcohol or gambling? How do you help an abused child? All of these are difficult and challenging questions that the many psychology schools of thought are trying to answer.

    So, then what is psychology? There are many misconceptions created by television and movies today, but the basic answer is that psychology is both an applied and academic science that studies the human mind and behavior. No matter what area of psychology you refer to, research in psychology seeks to understand and explain thought, emotion, and behavior. Psychology is applied to individuals via mental health treatment, performance enhancement, self-help, ergonomics, and many other areas affecting health and daily life.

    Psychology Schools of Thought and History

    While people have always been fascinated by human behavior, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that psychology began to be considered an actual science. Wilhelm Wundt established the first psychology lab in Germany. He believed in an area of psychology called structuralism—believing that certain structures in the mind caused behavior. Over the course of psychology’s history, different schools of thought have competed for prominence. Here are the major psychology schools of thought:

    Structuralism. This area in pyschology holds the belief that there is a connection between sensation and emotion and behavior.

    Functionalism. This area in psychology suggests the idea that the human brain is much like a computer, designed to carry out specific functions.

    Psychoanalysis. This psychology school of thought was created by Sigmund Freud, and believes in the rigorous probing of an individual s personal problems, motives, goals and attitudes as a way to heal the mind.

    Behaviorism. Proponents of this area of psychology essentially hold that all human behavior is learned from one s surrounding context and environment.

    Humanism. This much more recent psychology school of thought came as a reaction to behaviorism and Psychoanalysis, and emphasizes the importance of values, intentions, and meaning in the individual. The concept of the self is a central focus for most humanistic psychologists.

    Cognitivism. This area in psychology believes that psychology should be concerned with a person s internal representations of the world and with the internal or functional organization of the mind.

    As psychology moved away from its philosophical roots, psychologists began to employ more and more scientific methods to study human behavior; this opened up many more psychology careers. Today, researchers employ a variety of scientific methods, including experiments, correlational studies, longitudinal studies, and others to test, explain, and predict behavior.

    Areas of Psychology

    Students of psychology soon realize that the subject covers a huge range of material, and may never provide a definitive answer to the question, What is psychology? The diverse topics students might study as they explore the various areas in psychology include social behavior, personality, research methods, therapeutic techniques, and much more. Because it’s such a broad and diverse field, a number of different subfields and specialty areas have emerged. The following are some of the major areas of research and application within psychology, and provide some of the many rewarding and satisfying psychology careers:

    Abnormal Psychology is the study of abnormal behavior. This specialty area of psychology is focused on research and treatment of a variety of mental disorders and is linked to psychotherapy and clinical psychology.

    Biological Psychology studies how biological processes influence the mind and behavior. This area of psychology is closely linked to neuroscience and utilizes tools such as MRI and PET scans to look at brain injury or brain abnormalities.

    Clinical Psychology is focused on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders.

    Cognitive Psychology is the study of human thought processes and cognitions. Cognitive psychologists study topics such as attention, memory, perception, decision-making, problem solving, and language acquisition.

    Comparative Psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the study of animal behavior.

    Developmental Psychology is the area of psychology that looks at human growth and development over the lifespan.

    Forensic Psychology is an applied field focused on using psychological research and principles in the legal and criminal justice system.

    Industrial-Organizational Psychology is the area of psychology that uses psychological research to enhance work performance, select employee, improve product design, and enhance usability.

    Personality Psychology looks at the various elements that make up individual personalities.

    School Psychology is the area of psychology that works within the educational system to help children with emotional, social, and academic issues.

    Social Psychology is a psychology school of thought that uses scientific methods to study social influence, social perception, and social interaction. Social psychology studies diverse subjects including group behavior, social perception, leadership, nonverbal behavior, conformity, aggression, and prejudice.

    As an athlete, preparing physically is only half of what it takes to get ready for a big game. Just as important as sharpening their physical skills and making sure they re in top shape, is ensuring a player s state of mind and mentality are in the right place. Luckily, the boys have someone with the hockey program able to provide just that for them.

    Carina Thompson is a performance enhancement consultant who works with the sports psychology aspect of training at FSU. After receiving her bachelor s degree in psychology at Fordham University, she came to FSU and is currently pursuing her master s degree in sports psychology. She has been working with the hockey team as their personal performance enhancement consultant this season and will continue to provide services for them through the end of the season.

    I got involved with the team after apprenticing last season, she said. I felt a connection with the team and I knew I could provide the best services for the team so I applied to work with them. After writing an essay explaining why she felt she was the best candidate for the team, her supervisor agreed she was the perfect fit for the team and granted her the position.

    So what exactly is sports psychology? According to Carina, it s the performance enhancement in the sense of training the mental aspects of a sport for athletes. As the team s consultant, she does a variety of things under the sports psychology scope. Sports psychology focuses on topics such as attention, arousal, confidence, leadership, and motivation. The most recent topic the team has been working on is decision making. She also provides individual consultations for the boys if needed. You can cover a variety of things to make sure they are tracking the right stimuli in rink, she said. I make sure they re able to use distractions to their advantage, and help them how to turn what would normally be a debilitating situation into a facilitative situation.

    In addition, she also tries to maintain a supportive and positive presence for the team. I travel with the team and go to every practice because I believe being there for them and being part of a supportive system is vital to the team s confidence and performance, she said. I always like to show them that I m available even when they don t express a desire for a consultation. Carina is a firm believer in maintaining a positive attitude and environment, no matter how the team is doing.

    Prior to this season, Carina sat down with Head Coach, Nat Boiangin, and created a plan for the entire season on what she wanted to focus and work on with the team. We worked on a lot of decision making this semester, she noted. Not only is it vital to the team s success, but it s important in many facets of life, such as academics.

    Not only has the entire team benefitted from her services, Carina has also had nothing but a positive encounter working with the boys. This has been an amazing experience because I feel like I have been able to establish incredible relationships with the athletes, she said. I ve really come to respect them and understand them as people. They are not just athletes, they are students and each of them has their own back story that makes them the unique and remarkable people they are. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to get to know each of them and help them achieve optimal performance.

    Psychology Spotlights

    At the 2017 Inspired Discoveries Symposium on May 5, (an undergraduate symposium of research and creative works) the psychology student representation reflected almost half of the presentations at the event. Santokh Singh’s (pictured far left) talk, “Narcissistic Behaviors and Social Media Usage,” won this year’s research prize. According to the Inspired Discoveries website, “Judges were greatly impressed with the research itself and his poise in presenting the results and agreed that his original research was worthy of publication in a scholarly journal.”

    What Is Industrial/Organizational Psychology?

    The workplace can be a frustrating place for many employees and CEOs alike. In order to keep a place of employment running like a fine tuned machine, it often takes the efforts of many individuals.

    In many ways, this is where industrial and organizational psychology comes in. This branch of psychology is the study of the workplace environment, organizations, and their employees. Technically, industrial and organizational psychology – sometimes referred to as I/O psychology or work psychology – actually focuses on two separate areas that are closely related. Some professionals might liken it to yin and yang – one can’t exist without the other.

    The industrial side of industrial and organizational psychology generally focuses on the individuals and his relationship to the workplace. This might cover such things as job analysis, employee safety, employee training, job performance measurement, and employee hiring systems.

    The organizational side of industrial and organizational psychology, on the other hand, focuses on the organization and workplace as a whole. Increasing productivity and maximizing the performance of n organization as a whole is often covered under this area of industrial and organizational psychology. For example, professionals concerned with this aspect of I/O psychology will often look at how an organization might affect a worker’s individual behavior. This might include studies on interpersonal relationships in the workplace, as well as workplace environments and organizational policies.

    Both sides of industrial and organizational psychology became prominent during two different points in history. Industrial psychology, for example, came about during the first World War. Theories and techniques of this type of psychology were applied in order to assign soldiers to jobs and duty stations that suited them best.

    The foundations of organizational psychology were largely influenced by what was known as the Hawthorne studies, which were performed in a Western Electric plant in Hawthorne, Illinois, during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Western Electric officials performed a number of experiments in which they raised and lowered the levels of light to see if the workers in the plant would become more or less productive. Researchers concluded that during the experiments, workers’ productivity increased whether the light levels were raised or lowered. After World War II, psychologist Harry Landsberger studied these findings and concluded that the levels of light had nothing to do with increased productivity. They became more productive because the presence of the researchers at the time of the experiments made the workers feel as though someone was interested in their work.

    What Are the Education Requirements to Become an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist?

    As with any other psychology career, an industrial and organizational psychology career requires several years of schooling. Many aspiring industrial and organizational psychologists start their careers by earning bachelor’s degrees in general psychology. A handful of colleges and universities in the country, however, do offer four year bachelor degree programs in industrial and organizational psychology.

    Psychologist Educational Track

    Because there are very limited job opportunities for industrial and organizational psychologists holding only bachelor’s degrees, though, the majority of these professionals will also go on to earn advanced degrees. Those with master’s degrees in this area will often be able to start their industrial and organizational psychology careers in entry level positions. Those with Ph.D.’s, however, will usually be considered for even more employment opportunities in this field, and they will have an edge over the competition.

    What Do Industrial/Organizational Psychologists Do?

    Some of the main responsibilities of an industrial and organizational psychologist are to study the results of existing research or conduct original research. In order to conduct original research, an I/O psychologist might use a number of different methods. He might observe employees in action or conduct surveys, for instance. An I/O psychologist might also study workplace policies and other similar documents.

    By looking closely at the results of research done on workplaces and organizations, an industrial and organizational psychologist might be able to solve any number of problems. For instance, he might be able to:

      • increase productivity in the workplace.
      • develop screening procedures for new applicants.
      • increase the quality of a workplace.
      • counsel unhappy employees on personal and work related matters.
      • help rewrite company policies so that they benefit everyone involved.

    While working, industrial and organizational psychologists will typically work closely with a number of different people. This might include business owners, CEOs, supervisors, and employees.

    Where Do Industrial/Organizational Psychologists Work?

    An industrial and organizational psychologist might work in several different areas and all different types of organizations. They might work in blue collar organizations, like factories, plants, and construction sites. They might also work in white collar organizations, such as office buildings.

    Many industrial and organizational psychologists work directly for companies in human resources departments. Others, however, might work as independent consultants, coming onto the scene only when they are needed.

    What Is the Salary for an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist?

    According to the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. an I/O psychologist’s salary is often determined by the level of education completed. Professionals with master’s degrees, for instance, can expect starting salaries around $38,750. Those with PhD’s, though can expect starting salaries of around $55,000.

    The amount of money that an industrial and organizational psychologist makes is also influenced by experience as well and the types of companies that he works for. Those with more experience and those working with larger organizations and companies, for instance, will typically be able to command higher salaries. In general, the median salary for these professionals is estimated to be around $80,000.

    What opportunities are available to Clinical Psychologists?

    The Clinical Psychology program is designed for persons who wish to develop skills and knowledge related to the organization and provision of psychological services. The emphasis, however, is not on a private-practice service model. Students who wish to enter an accredited doctoral program in community, counseling, or clinical psychology following the M.A. should select this option. For graduate students to be competitive for employment in clinical-service delivery positions as well as for highly competitive doctoral-level APA-approved internship positions, fieldwork in a variety of settings is an invaluable experience; this program offers numerous opportunities for such training. It should be noted that doctoral level graduate education is required for licensure as a psychologist in all 50 states. The 48-unit curriculum of the program and the associated fieldwork will enhance the opportunities available to our students for acceptance into highly competitive doctoral programs offering the final pathway to licensing. The program provides a high quality graduate alternative to potential doctoral-level students who are often unable to attend graduate programs for socioeconomic or geographic reasons. For those students looking for employment, our broad-based training program will lead to entry level supervised clinical-service delivery positions in Health Management Organizations (HMOs), private agencies and multidisciplinary treatment team centers where knowledge of psychological principles may be used to promote prevention and health maintenance programs.

    What can I expect from the Clinical Psychology program?

    Objectives:

    The field of Clinical Psychology differs from many other areas of graduate study in that the predominant training model for clinical psychologists involves the “scientist-practitioner” approach. In line with this model, the Clinical Psychology program trains graduate students in:

    (a) conducting research in the scientific study of behavioral principles as they apply to psychological and physical health and pathology,

    (b) applying psychological theory and methods in the area of human services.

    This option has a 48-unit curriculum designed as the master’s level component (two years) of graduate training. Clinical graduate students receive extensive training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological disorders as well as in quantitative research methods. Classroom instruction and seminars are supplemented by field work training beginning in the first semester of graduate study and continuing, pending student interest, into the second year as well.

    All students must satisfactorily complete a culminating experience that will encapsulate the student’s academic, clinical, or research work for the program. For some students, this will involve undertaking an original research project leading to a thesis proposal and defense. For other students, this may involve additional clinical experiences and successfully passing the Comprehensive Examination. Specific academic, formatting, and oral defense requirements for a thesis are found in the Department of Psychology Graduate Handbook (.pdf)

    What are the admission qualifications for the Clinical Psychology degree?

    Admission to classified graduate status in this option requires an undergraduate major in psychology. Applicants who do not have a major in psychology are required to complete core undergraduate courses prior to acceptance to classified status; they should study the Graduate Handbook and consult with their graduate advisor about these requirements. A 3.0 grade point average is required, except on approval by the admission committee of the Clinical Psychology program.

    Enrollment is limited; it is not possible to admit all of the qualified students who apply. GRE scores above the 50th percentile are highly desirable. A personal statement, transcripts, letters of recommendation and personal interviews are also required. Information for prospective applicants may be obtained from the Psychology Graduate Office. Early application, careful study of the Department of Psychology Graduate Handbook and of the University Catalog (.pdf), and consultation with the graduate advisor are strongly recommended.

    Prerequisites

    Prerequisites required by the Clinical Psychology program include completing at least 18 units in undergraduate psychology courses, including the following specific courses:
