RN Programs in Tampa, Florida

RN programs in Tampa, Florida are a great opportunity for those wishing to pursue a career in healthcare. There are many different programs to choose from, so applicants can choose those which best fit.

The first step in pursuing an RN degree in Tampa is to decide what type of program to enter. One is eligible to work as a registered nurse with an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree. so RN programs are available for both of these education levels.

After graduating from an RN program, one must become licensed. In order to do so, he or she must pass the NCLEX licensure exam.

ADN vs. BSN Programs

An associate’s degree can be completed in as little as two years of full-time study. This is beneficial for those who wish to pursue a career as a registered nurse but do not want to spend an extended amount of time earning a degree. Earning an ADN may also be less costly than a BSN.

A bachelor’s degree in nursing can be completed in about four years of full-time study. Graduates of these programs may start out making about the same as associate’s degree RN’s, but they are often more eligible for promotion and may have a higher earning potential as a result. BSN-educated nurses are also closer to earning a master’s or doctoral level degree if they wish to do so.

Online vs. Traditional Programs

RN programs in Tampa are available in both online and on-site formats. though there will be a clinical component. Online programs are beneficial because of the increased flexibility they provide. Best LPN to BSN Programs in Arizona

At present, there are some 45,080 registered nurses (RNs ) employed in Arizona, and some 8,960 Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs ). The median annual salary for an RN is $71,200, and it is $50,100 for an LPN. Most of the nursing workforce are employed in acute care settings, with the highest paying employers being found in the Flagstaff and Phoenix areas. Here, employers will also almost always require their staff members to have a BSN degree as a minimum. This is because they will be expected to work independently, help to assess the health of patients, and make autonomous decisions. As a result, if you currently hold an LPN degree, you may be interested in looking for an LPN to BSN degree program.

The BSN degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing is by far the most comprehensive of all the degrees. Some 40% of the entire registered nursing workforce have this degree. Additionally, there are currently extensive pushes to ensure that a bachelor s degree becomes a mandatory requirement in order to become an RN. This rule has not yet been implemented, however, as you can also be an RN with an associate s degree. It is for this reason that most bridge programs in the country, including in Arizona, are LPN to RN programs, where the student achieves an associate s degree. From thereon, they can choose to take part in another bridge program, which is the RN to BSN degree pathway. If students are committed to completing both programs, they should be able to do to this within three years. However, all too often, students stop after they have received their RN license, choosing to reenter the workforce from there. Since there is a likelihood that all RNs will have to hold a BSN as a minimum very soon, this may not be the best choice. It is also for this reason that more and more schools are now offering direct LPN to BSN programs. Unfortunately, there are only three schools in the state of Arizona that currently meet this specific demand.

Do always make sure that you look into different schools and colleges that offer LPN to BSN programs in order to find the one that best suits your personal needs. Your needs include your interests in terms of certain specializations, but you also need to consider issues such as affordability and whether or not you are able to get to the school, particularly if it is not a program delivered online. School reputation, time spent before completing the degree and the type of school are all things that you should look into.

    Grand Canyon University

At Grand Canyon University. students can take part in an LPN to RN degree program and then transfer their credits over to an RN to BSN degree program. As such, if they follow the full track, they are effectively taking part in an LPN to BSN program.

Top 100 – Nursing Schools in the US

view all nursing and health schools

With over 700 bachelor nursing degree programs offered in the United States, finding and selecting the right program can be a daunting task. It’s important that prospective nursing students do their due diligence to deterine which programs are a good match for their needs and career ambitions. When selecting a nursing school there are several factors you should consider.

However, before you can decide which nursing school is going to be serve your career objective, you have to know what your career objectives are. Do you want to start as a licensed practice nurse (LPN)? If so, you can get started with a diploma or associate degree from an accredited program. However, if you want to be launch your career as a registered nursing (RN) you’ll want to earn either an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or preferrably a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), which will allow you further your education down the road.

Some of the general factors to consider when selecting a nursing program, once you’ve determined which degree path to pursue, include the folowing:

    • Nursing school specialties. Certain schools offer specific degrees and specialties. If your goal is to become a registered nurse, then you’ll want to research accredited schools that provide associate and bachelor degree programs that will prepare you to pass the NCLEX exam. If you want to become a nurse practitioner, then you’ll want to find schools that offer specific programs in the nursing specialty you’re interested in.
    • Accreditation. Earning your nursing degree at an accredited program will ensure you receive an education the meets industry standards. There are general nursing education accrediting organizations as well as associations that offer nursing accreditation for specialized education programs. Nursing school accrediting organizations include The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), which accredits all levels of nursing education, The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), which accredits only bachelor’s and master’s level nursing degrees, The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA), which accredits nurse anesthesia programs, and The American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation (ACNM), which, as its name suggests, accredits midwifery education programs.
    • NCLEX® examination pass-rates. At the end of the day, if you want to become a licensed registered nurse (RN), you have to pass the NCLEX examination. When selecting a nursing program, you’ll want to find out what percentage of a school’s students typically pass this exam. Ask the school for the past 5 to 10 years of NCLEX exam pass rates of their students. A school with a high pass rate is a good indicator that they prepare their students well.
    • Tuition. The cost of tuition for attending a nursing program can vary dramatically from school to school. Financial aid and assistance also varies between schools. Attending a more expensive nursing programs doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to get a better education or higher paying job. The average rate of tuition per semester for full-time instate students is roughly $860 to $1,020.
    • Clinical rotations. DOes the program you’re considering provide a substantion amount o clinical rotation time? Do the the clinical rotation provide hands-on experience? Are the clinical placements varied? If not, you may want to consider a different program. The best place to find out about the quality of a program’s clinical rotations is from previous students.
    • Size of school. Size doesn’t necessarily need to be a determinant in your decision making process but it is something to consider. Do you prefer smaller schools where you receive more personal attention, or the intellectual stimulationof a larger institution, such as a four-year college or university. There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s just a matter of personal preference.
    • Class size. When researching prospective programs, you’ll want to find out about the student-to-faculty ratio. The student-to-faculty ration is a good indicator of how much personalized attention you can expect to receive in the classroom and in clinical instruction. While it doesn’t really matter how large the classes are for your prerequisite courses, when it comes to your core nursing courses and clinical rotations, smaller class sizes are better.
    • Location of school. Location is a factor to consider when selecting any college or university to attend. If location is a factor for you, you’ll want to limit your searh the region where you want to study. Earning your nursing degree in area where you want to work once you grauate can also be advantageous. You can start your job search while you’re still finishing your degree and the school you attend may have established relationships with employers in the area.

The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program: Learning to Empower

If you’re serious about taking your social work education to the next level and making a difference in the lives of others, there’s simply no better place than Boston University to start building that future. The School of Social Work offers a dynamic, hands-on MSW program, nestled in the heart of a culturally and educationally rich city. The urban backdrop dovetails with our primary aim: to educate outstanding social workers in an intellectually rigorous environment so they can integrate and apply clinical and macro practice methods in diverse communities. Our multimethod curriculum not only prepares students for social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, but reflects our urban mission, embodying the School’s emphasis on the empowerment of oppressed groups, and social and economic justice in city settings.

The Master of Social Work offers a variety of program options, including several dual degree and specialization programs. Our students are immersed in both classroom and field education in full- and part-time programs on the Charles River Campus in Boston and three off-campus part-time, weekend programs, in northeast Massachusetts in Bedford. and in southeastern Massachusetts in Fall River and on Cape Cod. We also offer a part-time national Online MSW Program with an option to major in clinical or macro social work practice. The Online MSW Program allows individuals to earn an MSW degree while continuing to live and work in their own communities.

Accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. all of our programs include foundation and advanced-level courses and field education. Students begin with clinical and macro practice methods, human behavior in social environment, social welfare policy, and research, and a foundation field practicum and field education integrative seminar. In the advanced curriculum, students choose to specialize in either clinical practice or macro practice. They acquire in-depth knowledge and practice skills by taking advanced methods courses in clinical or macro practice, racial justice and cultural oppression, social work ethics, electives, and an advanced field practicum.

    Opportunities Abound

No matter which program you pursue, you will have an opportunity to develop excellent practice skills at all system levels in a range of social justice settings in Boston and throughout the United States. After the basic foundation courses, students choose electives to acquire special knowledge and skills related to working with vulnerable populations, including: children and adults who have experienced serious trauma, those in the child welfare system, adolescents transitioning to adulthood, family caregivers, older adults and their families, and immigrants and refugees.

Students also learn practice skills for those experiencing substance abuse and serious physical and mental health problems. Specialized practice skills include family systems and cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic methods, as well as macro practice skills relevant to communities and organizations, including human service management.

Those skills, along with a master’s degree from Boston University’s School of Social Work, has translated to many productive and meaningful careers. Recent employment surveys tell us that our graduates are primarily employed in the fields of health, child welfare, and family services, and a number of our clinical MSW graduates maintain private practices.

    Full-Time Study

The full-time program includes two years of study on the Charles River Campus in Boston. The foundation year typically comprises 27 semester credits in coursework and 6 in field education. The advanced-year program includes 24 semester credits in coursework and 8 in the field. To view sample full-time program plans, please visit Educational Program Plans .

    Part-Time Study

The School offers several extended, part-time programs. one on-campus and three off-campus, as well as an online program that accepts students three times a year. Students earn 65 credits, including participating in field internship(s). Part-time students take two to three courses per semester and fulfill degree requirements in three years (plus summers) or four years (without summers). Options are:

New Jersey Nursing Schools – Accredited Degree Programs for Student RNs and LPNs

Boost Your Career Potential with a Nursing Degree

When it comes to narrowing down your nursing school options in New Jersey, consider this: on the list below you’ll find well over 3 dozen schools, all accredited by either the CCNE or the NLNAC, and representative of just about any type of nursing degree you could imagine. PLUS you can pick and choose from urban or rural campus.

Tip: If you’re interested in a 2-year Associates degree or a Practical Nurse program you can generally follow this guideline–narrow down the list to community colleges and possibly the “county” colleges and hospital programs. Interested in a good old-fashioned diploma program then stick to the few hospital-based schools on the list; baccalaureate degrees, 4-year colleges; advanced degrees, graduate and post-grad nursing degrees, narrow down the list to the universities.

Opportunities for Nurse Grads in NJ

Over half of all working RNs work in the state’s hospitals, while the rest are scattered throughout various other patient care and non-patient care facilities. Good job opportunities are usually available in major hospitals, but don’t overlook regional community hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, and public and community health centers in smaller cities and towns.

Students are often attracted to the busy hospitals—it may be where they did clinical rotations, the hospital may offer sign-on bonuses, tuition reimbursement benefits, even loan repayment incentives. The state can boast 2-Level I Trauma Centers and a handful of Level II, both of which make nursing more exciting. Nurses get the opportunity to gain access to a diverse patient load and experience a spectrum of nursing specialties before settling on any one.

Which Schools Offer Certified Nursing Assistant Programs Online?

Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) work under the supervision of registered nurses and help medical patients perform such daily living activities as dressing, eating and bathing. Certified nursing assistant programs include a classroom component and clinical experience, and there are no programs offered entirely online. This article highlights types of schools that offer CNA programs. Schools offering Nursing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

    CNA Program Overview

While there are no CNA programs offered entirely through online study, a few schools offer some recorded lectures online or through distance learning for students who miss class. In rare cases, a school may offer a portion of its CNA program online. Online study isn’t possible because students must complete hands-on clinical experience to be eligible to take the certification exam.

CNA programs may award certificates or diplomas upon completion. Most require just a few weeks to complete. The curriculum generally includes courses in medical terminology, basic nursing skills, personal care skills and patient rights. Students practice their skills through supervised clinical experience in real healthcare facilities. All states require that graduates must pass a competency exam.

    Community College CNA Programs

CNA programs at community colleges include complete classroom, lab and clinical coursework. Students learn valuable communication and interpersonal skills, along with emergency procedures and evaluation of vital signs. The length of each program varies in accordance with state requirements, but can take between six to 12 weeks to complete. Here are some community colleges that offer CNA programs:

Popular Types of LPN Certifications – Practical Nursing Online #practical #nursing #online #programs

As was mentioned in our recent article on salary, one of the quickest ways to increase your earning potential as a practical nurse is by earning specialized LPN certifications. However, choosing to become a certified specialist will benefit you in a number of other ways as well.

In addition to increasing your LPN salary. holding a certificate also:

    • Makes you more marketable to prospective employers
    • Allows you to work in the healthcare niche you enjoy most
    • Gives you greater mobility within the medical community

    Popular LPN Certifications

There are over 20 different types of certificates available to Licensed Practical Nurses, with the most-popular programs being sponsored by the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service (NAPNES) and the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses (NFLPN). A brief overview of all types of LPN certification programs follows.

    Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Governed by the American Heart Association (AHA), ACLS certification programs train practical nurses how to respond in cases of cardiac arrest and other heart-related emergencies. Individuals who hold this certification will usually have a Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate as well since both deal with the process of resuscitating a patient.

    Basic Life Support (BLS)

Also offered by the AHA, BLS certification programs teach LPNs to recognize when a patient is in a life-threatening situation, and how to begin the process of resuscitating and stabilizing said patient. Included in this popular course is training in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator).

    Case Management (CCM)

Practical nursing professionals who are interested in becoming professional case managers must earn a CCM certificate through a program recognized by the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC). These programs teach the fundamentals of social work required to work at any number of different healthcare facilities.

    Certified Clinical Research Associates (CRA)

For those who are interested in working in clinical research (e.g. testing new pharmaceuticals on patients at a hospital), holding a CRA certification is usually required. ACRP-approved training teaches the LPN in the use of various devices, as well as the theory and procedures required to perform successful research.

    Certified Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC)

Another certificate offered by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) is the CRC. Holding this credential allows the LPN to hold the title of Certified Clinical Research Coordinator, which means he or she will be responsible for formulating and executing clinical tests and tracking their results.

    Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP)

Working as an LPN in a correctional facility usually requires earning a CCHP certificate through a program approved by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). Training involves learning proper procedures and techniques for providing healthcare in a correctional setting.

    Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN)

    Forensic Science Degrees #forensic #nursing #programs #in #florida

    Forensic Science Degrees

Forensic science is the discipline in which professionals use scientific means to analyze physical crime evidence. This evidence is then presented in court in order to help determine the innocence or guilt of a specific suspect. In order to determine the relevance of any evidence forensic scientists use a number of scientific and mathematical techniques. Forensic scientists must also possess a high level of reasoning skills in order to put many different elements together to come up with one single conclusive idea that will stand as successful evidence in the court of law. There are a variety of locations in which forensic scientists can find work at local, state, and government level. These locations include laboratories, law enforcement agencies, and autopsy examination centers.

    Forensic Science Associate Degrees

Individuals can earn their associate degree in forensic science in just two years by completing on average 60 credit hours. Students will be required to complete both general and major-specific education requirements. Major-specific courses include Microbiology, Photography in the Forensic Sciences, Forensic Psychology, Basic Accident Investigation, and Physical Identifiers. Upon completing their program some graduates will be eligible for entry-level positions within the industry but most will go on to continue their education in a bachelor s program. In order to be admitted to an associate degree program applicants will have to have a high school diploma or GED. Some colleges will also require that their applicant participate in a test to determine what level of general education courses the individual will be placed in. Tuition for this level of program averages between $6,300 and $17,400.

    Forensic Science Bachelor s Degrees

Students participating in a bachelor s degree program can finish their studies in four years with an average of 120 semester credit hours of work. Programs are available specifically in forensic science, as well as forensic biology or chemistry, or criminal justice with a forensic science emphasis. Either of these programs would be appropriate for someone looking to make their career in forensic science, depending on what their specific career interest is. The first half of the program will typically be dedicated to general education courses while the second half will focus on courses specific to forensic science. Key core courses include Criminal Procedure and Evidence, Fingerprint Analysis, Crime Scene Investigation, Crime Victim Studies, Constitutional Issues in Criminal Procedures, and Theories of Crime Causation. Many programs will also offer internships for students who are interested in applying what they have learned to real-world scenarios before they graduate. After students have graduated they will be eligible to go on to hold entry-level positions within the field of forensic science, such as that of forensic science technician, forensic pathologist, or crime scene investigator. Applicants for this degree level must have a high school diploma or GED. Competitive programs will require that applicants have at least a 2.5 high school GPA. Applicants who have college experience will need to submit their college transcripts for review. Students can expect to pay an average annual tuition set between $8,520 and $21,000.

    Forensic Science Master s Degrees

By seeking a master s degree in forensic science individuals can prepare for advanced positions within the forensic science industry. Graduates can find work in crime labs, the police department, governmental agencies like the Drug Enforcement Administration, medical examiner s offices, hospital labs, and pharmaceutical companies. Work in education, such as that of a high school teacher, is also available to master s degree holders, but additional training or certification may be needed. Students can complete their master s program is two years, which typically consists of 32 to 40 credit hours. Common course subjects include drug analysis, toxicology, biological evidence, criminalistics, DNA analysis, blood splatter patterns, and trace evidence. Individuals who are interested in earning their master s degree must have a bachelor s degree in a science-related field. Many programs will require that applicants have an undergraduate average GPA of at least 3.0. Other application requirements typically include GRE tests scores, a writing sample, and letters of recommendation from professional or educational references. Total cost of education for this level of program averages around $20,000.

    Forensic Science Doctoral Degrees

Earning a PhD is an option for forensic science professionals who wish to seek promotion to advanced leadership positions, teach at the college level, or go into research. A doctorate degree in forensic science can typically be completed through four to five years of study. The first half of the program focuses on core coursework requirements, while the last half focuses on dissertation research. Core coursework requirements include Forensic Instrumental Analysis, Controlled Substance Analysis, Pattern and Physical Evidence Concepts, Law and Forensic Sciences, Advanced Forensics, Forensic Laboratory Management, and Research Design in Forensic Science. Many programs will require that students maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA throughout the entirety of their studies. Admission requirements include an undergraduate degree in a similar field of study with a GPA of at least 3.0. Official GRE scores, a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and a professional resume are also usually required. The tuition for a doctorate degree will vary on school of attendance as well as program structure and length. A year of graduate study at a college or university for an individual who is a non-resident of that school s home state can cost up to $20,000 a year or more. It should also be noted that PhD programs in forensic science are virtually always offered in a face-to-face format as opposed to an online one.

The Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) is the preeminent main body for forensic science educational programs. FEPAC conducts reviews on post-secondary programs at the bachelor s and master s level to ensure that all students involved are receiving an education that will aid in the success of their post-college careers. To ensure such quality of education is taking place the organization takes different elements into consideration such as faculty, classroom structure, testing procedures, and grading procedures. Once the program has successfully met all minimum standards FEPAC will award accreditation. All programs currently accredited by the FEPAC can be found directly on their website.

Although certification is not a legal requirement it can aid individuals in gaining promotions and pay advancements within the industry, as it shows an advanced level of knowledge and dedication to a particular specialty. There are several different organizations related to the field of forensic science through in which professionals can seek certification, including The International Association for Identification (IAI), The American Board of Criminalistics (ABC), and The American Board of Forensic Document Examiners (ABFDE). The requirements to become certified vary by organization but the key things to consider are level of education, length of work experience, and professional references.

    Career Specialties

The field of forensic science is fairly broad and thus there are many different areas in which professionals can specialize. For instance, one may choose a career in forensic anthropology, where they will specialize in identifying and analyzing human remains. Criminalists are the main professionals who work at crime scenes collecting and sorting evidence. Forensic pathologists spend most of their time in the lab, using various methods to examine evidence like DNA and fingerprints. Pathologists might specialize even further in studying certain types of evidence, like ballistics. Forensic professionals who deal with cyber crime and look at evidence left on computers might be called forensic computer examiners. These are just a few of the specializations that are available in the field of forensic science.

Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in the Workplace

Although downward trends in fatal and non-fatal injuries at work in many industrialised countries reinforce the perception that ‘tough jobs’ are declining, health and wellbeing in the workplace remains an issue thanks to a range of factors, including decreased job security, potentially worsening working conditions and reduced opportunities to combine work with other private and social responsibilities. From 1990 to 2008, the rate of self-reported work-related illness – due to stress and related conditions in particular – doubled, jumping from 820 per 100,000 employed in 1990 to 1,620 in 2008.

The issue of workforce health and wellbeing is perhaps even more critical in the current climate given the perceived lingering effects of the economic crisis on the mental health of the working population. At the same time, there is increased evidence in the UK and other industrialised countries that problems related to modifiable health behaviour are becoming much more prevalent.

According to the Health and Social Care Information Centre (2014) the proportion of adults having a normal body mass index (BMI) decreased between 1993 and 2001 (from 41 to 32 per cent for men and 49.5 to 41 per cent for women), whereas the proportion of adults classified as obese increased from 13 to 24 per cent for men and 16 to 25 per cent for women over the same period. These factors result in costs to the economy and society at large. The economic costs of obesity to the NHS, for instance, rose from £479.3m in 1998 to £42bn in 2007 – an eightfold increase in less than a decade (National Obesity Observatory, 2010).

Improving health and wellbeing can therefore have real societal, economic and personal benefits above and beyond their value to business alone. Clearly, addressing wellbeing more effectively at work – with company programmes promoting health and wellness – may lead overall to increased life satisfaction, reduced healthcare utilisation and, potentially, a lower benefits bill.

The health insurer VitalityHealth commissioned RAND Europe, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, to conduct an employer and employee survey for the Britain’s Healthiest Company competition. The competition seeks to give employers an assessment of the health of their workforce and of their current health-promotion interventions. To that end, RAND Europe collected a large-scale dataset which we use in this work to understand the relation between a broad set of health and lifestyle risk factors and workplace productivity.

Building on existing quantitative and qualitative evidence, our research team sought to:

    1. Report on the prevalence of modifiable and other health risks among the large-scale study population including smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and nutrition, as well as mental health conditions.
    2. Identify determinants of workplace productivity loss due to sickness absence or presenteeism—that is, being at work but not functioning at a normal level due to sickness or medical conditions—with special focus on a set of health risks.
    3. Identify recommendations to help businesses improve the effectiveness of their current health and wellbeing interventions.

Wherever necessary, we make the assumptions, limitations and potential caveats of our analytical approach explicit in our report.

In order to address the research objectives formulated above, our research incorporates three strands:

    1. We review the available literature in order to collect currently available evidence about the relation between various personal health risks, organisational factors and workplace productivity;
    2. We use general descriptive statistics to highlight the prevalence of health risk factors among the employees in companies participating in the 2014 Britain’s Healthiest Company competition;
    3. We use multivariate regression approaches to investigate the determinants of workplace productivity loss. These analytical methods enable us to look at associations between the outcome of interest (productivity loss) and its determinants, such as personal health risk factors, work environment and other organisational characteristics.

Our findings suggest that lack of sleep, financial concerns and giving unpaid care to family members or relatives are negatively associated with productivity. Mental health problems are also found to cause significant productivity loss, especially in the form of presenteeism. In line with existing research we also found that employees with musculoskeletal and other (chronic) health conditions report higher rates of absenteeism and presenteeism than workers without such conditions.

When looking at work-environment factors we find that workers who are subject to workplace bullying report significantly higher levels of absenteeism and presenteeism than those who are not. We also find that more than 45 per cent of those studied reported being subject to unrealistic time pressures, which we find to be another significant cause of productivity presenteeism. Other work-environment factors associated with relatively higher levels of presenteeism included strained relationships at work.

Health, wellbeing and productivity in the workplace: A Britain’s Healthiest Company summary report May 22, 2015

In this study we look at the empirical relationship between a range of health and work environment factors and productivity in the workplace.

Timeline of an Online PhD Degree

    Applying to Doctorate Programs

Once potential online education PhD programs are narrowed down to a short list of schools, it’s time to start the application process. Given that doctoral programs are designed for those who are serious about reaching the pinnacle of their profession, it’s no surprise that the application process can be lengthy and rigorous. Here are some of the requirements that students might encounter when applying for a PhD education program.

A record of all education should be sent via official transcripts to the schools of choice. Keep in mind that some schools require a minimum GPA on certain courses, but most will not require the GRE; instead, admission is dependent upon completion of a master’s degree in education or a related field, as well as other criteria such as work experience.

Students should obtain at least three letters of recommendation from those who are familiar with their work in education; supervisors, work colleagues and former professors are good sources. Some schools may simply ask for a list of references and will contact them directly.

The essay serves as both a writing sample and a vehicle for students to distinguish themselves among a competitive field. Ideally, the essay should be thought-provoking and honest, focusing on why the student is a good fit for the program and what they intend to contribute to the field upon completion of their degree.

Some schools will require an interview with candidates who make their final list. Students might be asked to travel to the school to meet with a committee; distance learners can likely interview via Skype or some other form of video chat.

Some programs will only admit those who have already begun work in the field; two years is usually required, though some students might be admitted with less experience. The resume should include both paid work history and volunteer experience, specifically in various areas of the educational system.

    Year 1

During the first year of study, students take foundational courses in their chosen concentration, as well as core courses that are typical of any doctoral student in education. Statistics and measurement; research methods; and reviews and analysis of literature and research are common subjects of study. Students also work closely with advisers to begin developing a dissertation topic.

    Year 2

The second year’s focus will be on the concentration area, with more targeted classes that will help students refine their dissertation research as they delve into it more deeply. Classes might include topics such as education law, leadership, curriculum development, and politics in education.

    Year 3

Most students go through a third year of study, during which they are entirely focused on completing a dissertation that reflects original ideas and research. Once the research and writing is complete, the dissertation must be presented and defended to a graduate committee; the dissertation represents the culmination of the program.

    Testing and Graduation Requirements

Completing a doctoral program in education is no small feat; in addition to coursework, students may also have to fulfill further requirements. Some of the most common ones for online PhD in education programs may include:

Between the completion of required courses and starting on the dissertation in earnest, some schools administer a comprehensive examination that proves a student has gained the knowledge and skills taught in the program. Passing this examination is required in order to advance to the dissertation process.

As the cornerstone of the entire doctoral degree pursuit, the dissertation is an in-depth research paper that takes at least a year to prepare, and sometimes longer. Upon completion, the dissertation will be presented to a committee whose members ask questions and probe the content of the dissertation; the student is expected to successfully defend any and all points brought up.

Some schools require students to apply for their degrees once they have completed all requirements. The committee then reviews the student’s dissertation and defense, academic performance, and related criteria before awarding the degree.

During the second year of the program students intern in a hospital environment. Students are required to obtain a minimum of 480 hours of clinical supervision with a certified child-life specialist (as required by the Certifying Committee of the Child Life Council). The program and the field placement’s clinical supervisors form a team to educate the students. Together, the team aims to facilitate students’ entrance into the profession of child life and to enhance the quality of psychosocial care and services delivered to children and families.

Each fieldwork experience is supported by a seminar that meets once a week. Seminars are designed to encourage students to become reflective professionals through self-evaluation and peer-evaluation activities.

Many of our graduates are currently working at Lucille Packard’s Children’s Hospital, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, Oakland and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, San Fransciso—three of the largest programs in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Director of UCSF Benioff, San Francisco is a graduate of the Mills College School of Education. Our alumnae/i also pursue jobs in child life in hospitals.

Top 5 San Francisco Marketing MBA Programs

Elmer Wheeler of the Tested Selling Institute famously advised would-be product-pushers to “sell the sizzle, not the steak .” Wheeler’s adage simply explains how marketing often has less do with leveraging a product’s marketplace position than it does about the subtle art of seduction. And what better way to become Don Juan or Juanita of the boardroom than to get yourself a Marketing MBA.

Although local draconian housing laws combined with an influx of indifferent techies have largely driven out the counter-cultural element that defined San Francisco, the Bay Area is still a hotspot for folks who “think different.” The natural splendor of the region, surrounded by glorious Pacific Coast beach, hiking trails at Point Reyes, and the dry flat Central Valley directly west, is also hard to top.

We took the liberty of surveying the top 5 San Francisco Marketing MBA programs for you:

UC Davis offers an MBA concentration in marketing that prepares graduates for careers in Brand Management and Direct Marketing; Product Development; Public Relations and Advertising; Market Research and Marketing Consulting. The concentration emphasizes the development of new products, “conducting market research, planning advertising and promotion programs, creating marketing strategies, providing superior customer service, understanding e-commerce, developing profitable pricing strategies and brand management.”

USF’s Marketing MBA teaches students how to “build competitive advantage in the global marketplace” and run a “successful customer-driven organization” through a comprehensive understanding of market segmentation, competitive analysis, pricing strategies, public relations, advertising and distribution channels. USF graduates have gone on to upper management positions in the fields of Market Research, Sales, Advertising, Brand Management, General Management and Management Consulting.

SFSU’s MBA Emphasis in Marketing teaches students how to harness a “blend of creativity and analysis” in order to give their target market the “right combination of product, price, place and promotion.” SFSU gives students an opportunity to explore a wide variety of marketing applications: advertising, branding, channel management, customer relationship management, data analytics, marketing research, pricing, public relations and sales. SFSU marketing graduates have gone on to work for Apple, Clif Bar, Clorox, HP, Kaiser Permanente and Samsung, among others.

SJSU’s Marketing Concentration was designed to “spark student innovation and provide multi-disciplinary opportunities through an academically challenging curriculum“ that focuses on “the business functions concerned with market definition and objectives, product or service development, customer segmentation and product positioning.” SJSU Marketing graduates go on to careers as market and survey researchers; product managers; product marketers; marketing analysts; sales representatives; retail managers; direct marketers; channel and distribution managers; marketing communications and web marketers.

SCU’s Leavey School of Business offers a Marketing degree that emphasizes “the latest in web and mobile marketing [and] quantitative methods for gathering precise, useful data” so your brand can “connect with customers and build brand recognition.” SCU offers student internships at large area companies like Google and Facebook, as well as a number of study abroad opportunities. SCU Marketing graduates go on to positions within the high-tech, financial services, retail, real estate consulting and nonprofit fields. Examples include: retail advertising, sales, new product development, market research, Internet marketing and supply chain management.

Facts About the Most Used and Abused Drugs from Alcohol to Ecstasy:

The path to drug addiction begins with that first act of taking drugs. Over time, a person may need more of the drug to get the same effect. Drug seeking becomes compulsive, in large part as a result of the effects of prolonged drug use on brain functioning and, thus, on behavior. Drug addiction makes drug use a compelling need, not a casual choice.

The drug addiction Newsletter is published periodically, and provides up-to-date information concerning advancements in the treatment of drug addiction, as well as drug addiction trends.

    What is Amphetamine Addiction?

Viewed in some circles as the less-threatening “little brother” of the dangerous and highly addictive crystal meth, amphetamine remains a significant threat to the adolescents and adults who use the drug in misguided attempts to fight off fatigue, enhance concentration, or gain a competitive edge in an athletic event.

Drug Addiction an Illness, Not a Crime

Whether addiction is an actual disease remains a hotly debated topic one which probably will continue. Websters defines ‘disease’ as follows: “Any departure from health presenting marked symptoms; malady, illness; disorder”. Drug addiction certainly meets that measure; show me a drug addict and Ill show you someone presenting symptoms of illness, malady and disorder.

    Clinical Psychology Option #clinical #psychology #graduate #programs #in #california

    Clinical Psychology Option

What opportunities are available to Clinical Psychologists?

The Clinical Psychology program is designed for persons who wish to develop skills and knowledge related to the organization and provision of psychological services. The emphasis, however, is not on a private-practice service model. Students who wish to enter an accredited doctoral program in community, counseling, or clinical psychology following the M.A. should select this option. For graduate students to be competitive for employment in clinical-service delivery positions as well as for highly competitive doctoral-level APA-approved internship positions, fieldwork in a variety of settings is an invaluable experience; this program offers numerous opportunities for such training. It should be noted that doctoral level graduate education is required for licensure as a psychologist in all 50 states. The 48-unit curriculum of the program and the associated fieldwork will enhance the opportunities available to our students for acceptance into highly competitive doctoral programs offering the final pathway to licensing. The program provides a high quality graduate alternative to potential doctoral-level students who are often unable to attend graduate programs for socioeconomic or geographic reasons. For those students looking for employment, our broad-based training program will lead to entry level supervised clinical-service delivery positions in Health Management Organizations (HMOs), private agencies and multidisciplinary treatment team centers where knowledge of psychological principles may be used to promote prevention and health maintenance programs.

What can I expect from the Clinical Psychology program?

The field of Clinical Psychology differs from many other areas of graduate study in that the predominant training model for clinical psychologists involves the “scientist-practitioner” approach. In line with this model, the Clinical Psychology program trains graduate students in:

    (a) conducting research in the scientific study of behavioral principles as they apply to psychological and physical health and pathology,

    (b) applying psychological theory and methods in the area of human services.

This option has a 48-unit curriculum designed as the master’s level component (two years) of graduate training. Clinical graduate students receive extensive training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological disorders as well as in quantitative research methods. Classroom instruction and seminars are supplemented by field work training beginning in the first semester of graduate study and continuing, pending student interest, into the second year as well.

All students must satisfactorily complete a culminating experience that will encapsulate the student’s academic, clinical, or research work for the program. For some students, this will involve undertaking an original research project leading to a thesis proposal and defense. For other students, this may involve additional clinical experiences and successfully passing the Comprehensive Examination. Specific academic, formatting, and oral defense requirements for a thesis are found in the Department of Psychology Graduate Handbook (.pdf)

What are the admission qualifications for the Clinical Psychology degree?

Admission to classified graduate status in this option requires an undergraduate major in psychology. Applicants who do not have a major in psychology are required to complete core undergraduate courses prior to acceptance to classified status; they should study the Graduate Handbook and consult with their graduate advisor about these requirements. A 3.0 grade point average is required, except on approval by the admission committee of the Clinical Psychology program.

Enrollment is limited; it is not possible to admit all of the qualified students who apply. GRE scores above the 50th percentile are highly desirable. A personal statement, transcripts, letters of recommendation and personal interviews are also required. Information for prospective applicants may be obtained from the Psychology Graduate Office. Early application, careful study of the Department of Psychology Graduate Handbook and of the University Catalog (.pdf), and consultation with the graduate advisor are strongly recommended.

Prerequisites required by the Clinical Psychology program include completing at least 18 units in undergraduate psychology courses, including the following specific courses:

    • Introductory Psychology
    • Abnormal Psychology

Doctor of Nursing Practice Programs in Texas

As of 2011, Texas has six Doctor of Nursing Practice programs, producing very highly educated nurse practitioners and leaders. It took a lot of hard work and vision to get the state’s nursing profession to this point. It, in fact, reflects a series of very recent events. In 2004, the AACN released the results of their DNP Task Force, announcing that all advanced practice nursing programs should be moved to the doctorate level by 2015. The following year, Texas put together its own DNP Roadmap Task Force, under the banner of the Texas Organization of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education and the Nursing Education Policy Coalition.

Their whitepaper, released in 2006, largely echoes the AACN. An exceptionally well trained nursing workforce would produce better outcomes and use resources more efficiently, the task force contended. Texas truly needed highly educated nursing professionals, they explained; hours for medical residents had decreased, and nurses needed to fill in. The task force also felt that DNP programs could help with the shortage of nursing faculty and, in an indirect way, ease the shortage of nurses. (Since educators need a doctorate degree to move up to the highest teaching positions; master’s trained educators often head back to the private sector where they find positions that pay them better.)

This was not all. The task force further noted that there was a demand for the DNP in Texas, and if the state didn’t set up programs, DNP candidates would go elsewhere for their education, and possibly end up working elsewhere, too. All in all, it was a convincing argument. The message was heeded. Texas now has public as well as private institutions offering the DNP, and they cater to the needs of different nursing professionals. Nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners alike can continue their education at the doctoral level.

DNP Program Specializations and What Career Opportunities May Present?

A DNP student has a range of choices. The AACN has been adamant about doctoral level education for advanced practice nurses, but there are other tracks available as well. A candidate can often find multiple degree tracks within the same school. Texas Christian University, for instance, has both an advanced practice nursing track and a nurse administration track. Texas Tech has advanced practice nursing and nurse leadership.

What can a student expect to learn in a doctoral program? The DNP is a practice-oriented degree as opposed to a research one, but this does not mean it includes only clinical coursework. All programs include courses on healthcare systems, both human and technological, and in some programs, these are the main emphasis. There is generally a final project that involves translational research. Candidates can also expect to complete 1,000 post-baccalaureate clinical hours (approximately 500 if entering post-master’s).

There are a number of possible careers for DNP-trained nurses. The Texas DNP Task Force notes the following: Quality Improvement Director, Vice President of Patient Care, and Clinical Information Technology Specialist. Although DNP programs do not have pedagogy as a main focus, many graduates do become nurse educators. According to statistics published on the site of the University of Texas-Houston, 78% of the students in Texas’ first DNP graduating class were practicing while another 22% were in academia.
