How to reinstall Windows 10

Your Windows 10 PC has run into problems and you have exhausted all the obvious troubleshooting angles. So what can you do to try to get things working properly again?

The next step in Windows 10, like earlier versions of Windows, is to investigate the System Restore tool. System Restore works in a similar way to File History, only it affects system and program files instead of your personal data.

Snapshots of these files, known as Restore Points, are taken at key moments during general use, and if you run into problems, you can try rolling back to a previous Restore Point to see if it fixes the problem.

System Restore

System Restore usually works best when your problem has been caused by a recent change to your computer, typically through installing or updating new hardware, software or Windows itself. The step-by-step guide below reveals how to access and use System Restore, either from within Windows or via your computer’s recovery menu.

If System Restore doesn’t do enough to fix the problem, then you can perform a more radical step: go back to the previous build of Windows 10.

When you perform a major update of Windows, or Windows 10 installs a major new version, it creates a backup of the previous build, just in case you run into any problems. This backup is stored in the ‘Windows.old’ folder it can take up a fair bit of space, and can be removed using Disk Cleanup.

But if you have the spare capacity, leave it in place in case you ever need to use it to fix a problem.

Rolling back your system in this way works in a similar fashion to System Restore: your data is unaffected, but any changes made since the new build was installed, like changes to settings or programs, newly installed apps and so on, will be undone.

If you need to use the rollback feature, and Windows is working well enough for you to access it normally, open Settings before selecting ‘Update security’ followed by ‘Go back to an earlier build’. If Windows won’t boot, use your recovery drive or select ‘Troubleshoot Advanced options’ to access the option.

You’ll see a message telling you Windows is getting things ready. You’ll then be asked to give a reason for why you’re rolling back Windows this helps highlight issues that may require an urgent fix.

You’ll then be given a brief summary of the changes being made (no specific details are available, unlike with System Restore, sadly), with a prompt to back up for safety’s sake (if File History is turned on, you’re probably covered).

Click Next, make a note of the warning about your logon password and then click Next again, sit back and wait while your PC is restored.

If all goes well, you should have a working version of Windows 10 again, with just a few maintenance tasks to perform (reinstalling programs, updating settings, and so on) before everything’s back to normal.

Beyond a rollback

Unfortunately, rolling back your PC to the previous version of Windows 10 won’t always cure all issues. You may find your device still doesn’t function as it should after you’ve refreshed it, or the procedure might not work.

If Windows comes across a problem, it’ll inform you of the fact, try to resolve it and then, if the fix fails, undo all the changes it’s made, leaving you back where you started.

If all else fails, fixing your PC will involve something more drastic: a complete wipe and reinstall of Windows 10 itself in what is now termed a ‘reset’ of your PC. The good news is that you can perform this action without losing your data or by wiping the drive entirely. However the end result is the same: you’ll lose all your settings and apps.

1. System Restore

If you can boot into Windows, access System Restore via the desktop. Type ‘System Protection’ into the search bar and click ‘Create a restore point’ followed by ‘System Restore. ‘ If Windows won’t start, you can use System Restore automatically.

Or, boot from your USB recovery disk, select ‘Troubleshoot’, ‘Advanced options’ and then ‘System Restore’.

2. Restore Points

By default, Windows recommends you use the most recent Restore Point; in fact, you may even find it’s the only Restore Point offered.

Make a note of the time and date it was taken, and click ‘Scan for affected programs’ to see which programs and hardware drivers will be affected by rolling back your PC to this point.

You’ll see the programs that will be removed if you choose it, and others that will be restored. This should help you decide whether to use it or not.

3. Send your PC back in time

To restore a recommended Restore Point, click ‘Next’ and follow the prompts to roll back your PC. If this doesn’t work, or you want to try an earlier Restore Point, select ‘Choose a different Restore Point’ and click ‘Next’.

Browse through the available points, noting what would be affected by choosing each one. After restoring, you can undo the process if it doesn’t have the desired effect.

How to Install an Apple TV

Gather your pieces. The Apple TV comes with the Apple TV itself, along with a power cord and a remote. You can only connect the Apple TV to an HDTV, and you’ll need an HDMI cable to do so. The HDMI cable doesn’t come with the Apple TV, but you can pick one up at an electronics store or online for cheap. When it comes to HDMI cables, there isn’t much practical difference between a $10 cable and an $80 cable. You will also need to be able to connect the Apple TV to your network, either via Wi-Fi or by using Ethernet cable.

    • The first generation Apple TVs could connect via component (five-prong) cables, but this is no longer possible with newer versions of the hardware. [1]
    • If you want to connect your Apple TV to your home theater system, you’ll need a optical digital audio (S/PDIF) cable.

Setup your Apple TV where it can reach the TV and an outlet. Make sure that none of the cords will be stretched tight by the connection. You should also make sure that the Apple TV has room to breathe around it, as it can get warm during operation.

    • If you’re using a wired connection to your network router, make sure that you’ll be able to reach it with the Ethernet cable.

Connect the Apple TV to the HDTV or home theater receiver via HDMI. You can find the HDMI ports on the back or side of your HDTV, or on the back of your home theater receiver. Your HDTV may have one or more HDMI ports. Some older HDTVs may not have HDMI ports.

    • Make note of the label for the HDMI port that you connect the Apple TV to. This will help you select the correct input when you turn on your TV.

Connect the power cable to the Apple TV and plug it into a socket. To be extra cautious, make sure it’s plugged into a surge protector to protect against power surges.

Connect the Ethernet cable (if applicable). If you’re connecting to your network via Ethernet, plug the cable into the back of the Apple TV and then into your router or network switch. If you’re connecting via Wi-Fi, you don’t need to worry about this.

Connect the Apple TV to your home theater (optional). Normally the Apple TV will send audio through the HDMI cable to the TV, but if you use an audio receiver you can connect the Apple TV to it with a optical digital audio (S/PDIF) cable. Connect the cable to the back of the Apple TV and then into the proper port on your receiver or TV.

    Part Two of Four:
    Setting Up Apple TV Edit

Turn on your TV to the correct input. Press the “Input” or “Source” button on your TV’s remote to select the HDMI port that you connected the Apple TV to. The Apple TV usually turns on automatically, so you should see the menu to select your language. If you don’t see anything, double-check your connections and then press the center button on your Apple TV remote.

Select your language. Use the remote to select your interface language. Use the center button on the remote to make your selection.

Connect to your network. If you are connected to the network via Ethernet, Apple TV will automatically detect the network and connect. If you are connecting via Wi-Fi, a list of available wireless networks will be displayed. Select the network that you would like to connect to. Enter your password if the network is secured.

Wait for the Apple TV to activate. It may take a few moments for Apple TV to perform its initial setup process. After the setup process is complete, you’ll be asked if you want to opt-in to the usage data collection program for Apple. [2]

Check for updates. Your Apple TV will work best when it’s updated to the latest version of the software. You can check for updates using the Settings menu.

    • Open the Settings app on the Apple TV Home screen.
    • Open the “General” option and then select “Update Software”. Your Apple TV will check for and install any available updates.

Browse your iTunes purchases. You can stream any of your purchased movies and TV shows after connecting your Apple TV to your iTunes account. Your most recent purchases will be displayed at the top of the Home screen. You can select the “Movies”, “TV Shows”, and “Music” libraries to see the iTunes storefronts and all of your purchased content.

Use the streaming apps. The Apple TV comes loaded with a variety of streaming apps that you can use to watch streaming video. Many of these apps, such as Netflix and Hulu+, require a separate paid subscription before you can start using them to stream video.

View your shared iTunes libraries. If you have Home Sharing enabled on all of your devices, you can access your different libraries by using the “Computers” option on the Home screen. Selecting this will display all of the computers on your network that have Home Sharing enabled in iTunes. Select the computer that you want to stream from, and then browse the library to choose video and music to stream.

New Research Finds That 65% of Companies Are Using Cloud-Based Storage for Remote Location Disaster Recovery

    Burlington, Massachusetts July 09, 2014

Survey Highlights the Need to Tame the Increasing Complexity of Data Protection, Cost of Downtime

Woburn, MA July 9, 2014 Today Acronis , the global leader in new generation data protection announced sponsoring new research from IDC that identifies complexity and data growth as key data protection challenges for small-and medium-sized businesses. The findings show that more and more organizations are dealing with simultaneously needing to back up physical, virtual and cloud environments, reveal varying levels of cloud backup adoption across different geographies, and bring to light the cost of downtime for SMBs.

The findings are based on a worldwide, cross-industry survey of small and medium businesses ( 1,000 employees) concerning their evolving data protection and disaster recovery needs. Respondents were from eight countries, including: France, Germany, Russia, the UK, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and the US.

    Global findings include:

    • International adoption in the cloud lags behind the US: While 93 percent of US SMBs back up some portion of their data to the cloud, this figure is just 65 percent globally. This includes 57 percent of SMBs in Asia Pacific and 63 percent in Western Europe. Of the organizations not backing up to the cloud, companies in Western Europe and Asia Pacific were far more likely to cite security as a concern than US companies. Specifically, 33 percent of respondents from the US cited security as the reason they are not backing up to the cloud, while 59 percent of Western European companies and 45 percent of Asia Pacific countries noted the same concerns.
    • Downtime is a killer: Nearly 80 percent of companies estimate downtime costs them at least $20,000 per hour or more, and more than 20 percent estimate it costs them at least $100,000.
    • More organizations are facing backup complexity with heterogeneous environments: Almost 37 percent of organizations have to simultaneously back up virtual, physical and cloud-based servers. Of those that are managing virtual infrastructures, 54 percent have to manage two or more different hypervisors. Within these figures, the US (77.8%), UK (74.2%) and Singaporean (78.1%) IT infrastructures are far more complex than those of Germany (38.7%), France (48.3%) and Japan (45.5%).
    • Need to meet strict RTOs: 87 percent of companies retain their most recent cloud-based backup on-premises as well.

The findings released today are clear – it s a different world for IT managers today, and data backup for a small or medium-sized business is more complex than ever, said Eric Burgener, Research Director, Storage at IDC. Data sizes and types continue to evolve, as does the number of servers and operating systems each company uses. This leads to a host of new challenges IT managers face to make sure they can back up and protect their data and restore operations quickly.

Data is more plentiful, complex, and valuable than ever before, said Serguei Beloussov. CEO at Acronis. That s why we pioneered the Acronis AnyData Engine, so organizations of all sizes can easily protect their data and ensure their systems can be restored smoothly, quickly and completely. With downtime costing hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars for some companies, every IT manager should make sure they have a plan in place to restore operations and avoid data loss.

Survey respondents were all IT personnel with responsibility for purchase decisions and overall management, on the team that had responsibility for these areas, or that influenced purchase decisions in these areas.

    Free bookcase skills

Buy a bookcase, then have your Sim begin to study. Interrupt the action so that the book is placed on the ground. Sell the bookcase. The book can now do everything the bookcase could have done for free.

Increasing chance to have baby boys

Have a pregnant female Sim eat apples to increase the chance of having a boy.

Increasing chance to have baby girls

Have a pregnant female Sim eat watermelons to increase the chance of having a girl.

    Increasing chance for multiple babies

To increase the chance of having twins or triplets, have one or both parents have the lifetime reward of Fertility Treatment.

Set one of your female Sim’s traits to Kleptomaniac. Go to the graveyard, and have the Sim steal male remains. On the second day after putting the male remains in your home, a ghost will appear at 11:00 p.m. and disappear at 4:00 a.m. It will appear every other day. Socialize with the ghost every night it appears. When you become best friends with the ghost, it will begin appearing every night. Get the “Fertility” reward. Confess your attraction to the ghost. Ask to snuggle on the bed, and kiss him. Try for a baby every night until you start throwing up. You will now have a ghost baby that you can control.

    Ghosts in your house

Go to the graveyard, click on all the tombstones, and take all possible tombstones. Return to your house, and place them somewhere in your backyard. You now have a 70% chance of a ghost or two, or even a whole party of ghosts visiting your house each night. To improve your chances, write in the epitaph “Here Lies [Sim’s name], The One Who Returns”.

People watching you will become your friends if you keep playing. The higher your guitar skill, the faster they will become friends with you.

Instead of using a cheat code to toggle “aging on” and “aging off” like in The Sims 2. you can de-activate the age in “Game Options” under “Options”. When you uncheck the box next to “Aging”, your Sims will no longer become older. You can also slow aging down in this menu by setting the “Lifetime” bar. It can be set from 25 days to 960 days.

    Quickly advance age

Use the following trick to change your Sim’s age (toddler, child, teen, etc.) quickly. Buy a birthday cake from the grocery store, and place it somewhere on your lot. Click the cake, and select “Have Birthday”. Then, choose the Sim to be aged. This is a good method to get past the baby stage.

Go to Pleasant Rest Graveyard. Near the gate is a bush called “Death Flower Bush”. Harvest the flower from it, and keep it in your Sim’s inventory. If you die, that Sim will give the flower to the Grim Reaper and be resurrected. Although the flower will not reappear there again, if your Sim has Level 7 Gardening, they can plant the “Unknown Special Seeds” found in the graveyard and some other places that have a chance to grow as a Death Flower. Note: Having the Green Thumb trait to revive the plant may help.

    Changing your name

To easily change your name, go to the map, and find City Hall. It should give you an option to change your name during the day between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

To get new clothes, you first have to buy a dresser from “Buy Options”. Once there, click “Plan Outfit”. You can put a total of three different clothes for each type (formal, every day, athletic, etc.).

Learning all guitar songs from books

Have your Sim reach Guitar skill level 5. Have a level 5 book in their inventory, click the guitar, then select “New Song” to learn it. After reaching Guitar skill level 6, do the same thing with a level 6 book. Repeat the process until the Sim reaches Guitar skill level 10, and they will know all songs that were taught.

    Creating brilliant paintings or masterpieces

Create a stylized still life after it is unlocked. Choose “Genius”, and make it in the largest possible frame. You will now have a much better chance of getting a brilliant painting or masterpiece.

    Building a basement

Put down staircases on a new lot to lower the terrain. Go to the bottom of the first one, and miss out one tile, then put down another staircase. Repeat this again to have three staircases. Delete the staircases. Use the “Level Terrain” tool to level the terrain from the lowest tile. Set it as big or small as desired. Using the “Straight Line Wall” tool, build walls around this hole so there are walls pressed up against hills. Build the room above so it covers the entire basement. Cover around the house with the “Foundation” tool; all the slopes should be covered up. Place one tile in the top floor, then create a staircase leading down to the basement. Make two or more foundation blocks at the front of the house, and place a staircase leading up them.

    Duck Time moodlet

Buy the Ducksworth of Bathington, and place it in your bathtub. When a Sim takes a bath, they will get the Duck Time moodlet which results in a +15 boost for four hours.

    Getting rid of dirty dishes

Drag an empty plate into a Sim’s inventory, then drag it to sell. You will not get any money, but if your Sim does not have a dish washer, it is a quick and efficient way to get rid of dirty dishes.

There is a glitch in Create-A-Sim mode that allows to you to make very strange faces. Go to the face designing area. Select a face part such as the eyes, and max out all the sliders one way or the other. Then, go to a different face part, and select one of the predesigned parts. Return to the eyes. The sliders will have reset to the middle, but the eyes will still look the same. This works for all of the face adjusting tabs. You can then continue to max out the size of the eyes and repeat. You can make eyes the size of dinner plates, very long cheekbones, huge noses, and more.

Have a Sim call for pizza. When the pizza delivery man arrives, do not accept the pizza. The delivery man will eventually leave the pizza on the front porch, and it will never get stale. You can stack as many pizzas there as you want. If your Sims get hungry, just tell them to get a pizza from the front porch.

    EA game references

When you have the video game system and your Sims play it, zoom in on the TV to see that the games they are playing are various Electronic Arts titles.

Have a Sim reach the top painting level to have the ability to create masterpieces. One of the paintings that can be created is that of a creature from Spore .

How to Build a PC for Beginners – Step by Step Installation Guide

It’s true: building a PC is a very straightforward process these days and literally a matter of slotting in a few components here and there, plugging in some cables, and maybe tightening a few screws. Then you boot up your machine, configure the settings that come up on-screen, and install your operation system. Boom – now you’re ready to load up your favorite game and kill some aliens or whatever takes your fancy.

The saying “if you can build Lego, you can build a computer” is actually pretty spot on when you think about it.

When some people think of building a computer, they imagine some crazy-technical magical procedure that only the tech elite could even fathom. Truth is it’s a breeze, and especially in 2016. Hardware companies WANT it to be dead easy for you so you don’t have to come running to their support team or return their products 😉

Some first-time builders may do just fine figuring it out on their own (and referring to product manuals), but if you want a little more guidance t his beginner-friendly, simple step by step installation guide on how to build a PC is here to help.

If you have all the parts for your new gaming computer ready to go, set some time aside (couple hours roughly unless you’re building a Frankenstein of a build) and get started with the steps below.

    Safety First, Soldier

Before getting started I would recommend having a read of the Safety Precautions To Building A Gaming Computer article. It covers important information about building your PC safety and correctly so that you don’t damage yourself or your expensive hardware.

Your PC components come in an anti-static bag, but do not remove them from their bags until you need to.

The case and components should provide all the bits and pieces that you need for an installation, but you may also require a screwdriver as well. Anti-static wrist bands are useful, but not necessary if you ground yourself properly before handling your parts, and make sure you’re not working on carpet.

    Prepare Your Case

The first step in building your PC is preparing the computer case. To build your PC use an area that has enough room, ample lighting, and with at least two nearby mains power outlets.

Unpack the computer case and follow the instructions that came with it to remove the outer casing or the side cover panel, depending on the case style. Then lay the case on its side on a flat surface so you have easy access to the inside of the case to install your components.

    Installing the Power Supply

You now need to fit the power supply into the case, which is very simple to do. It fits into the large hole at the back end of the case which is usually at the top. Make sure that the power socket and fan outlet face outwards. Secure the PSU with the screws that came with it.

    Installing Everything Else

Once you have prepared the case and installed the PSU you’re ready for the next step in this quick-start guide on how to build a PC – installing the motherboard and then every other component after that:

First Boot Up And BIOS Setup

Before attempting the first boot up for your computer, you should check over your new build. Make sure all your components are installed properly. Your monitor, PC case, and speakers should all by connected to a power source in the wall. Switch these on, and then press the On button which should be located at the front of your PC case.

The power light on the front of your PC should light up, you should also hear the whim of the CPU fan and any PSU fans, and also the hard drive spinning.

A few seconds later you should see some text being displayed on the monitor, and then eventually display something like “unable to load operating system”. If this happens then the first boot up was a success and you can continue to the next step which is configuring your BIOS .

    Install the Operating System

Once you have configured the BIOS for the first time, you can continue to install your operating system. Most of you will be installing Windows 10 and all you need to do is follow the basic steps on-screen after putting in the Windows disk (or USB drive).

That’s basically all you need to know on how to build a PC. Once you have installed the operating system, you are all done and ready to play. As you see, building your own custom PC is easy as pie. Enjoy your new machine.
