  • With not much in Mickey Rooney s estate, fight possible over remains

With not much in Mickey Rooney’s estate, fight possible over his remains

    Story highlights

    • Rooney’s lawyer doubts a deal can be reached out of court on where he’ll be buried
    • Rooney’s wife is the only person with authority to claim his body, her lawyer says
    • A hearing is set for Friday to decide who controls remains
    • Rooney left his estate to stepson Mark Rooney

Actor Mickey Rooney did not want to be buried in a cemetery plot he bought years ago, before splitting with his wife, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Rooney, who died of natural causes at age 93 on Sunday, also did not want his stepson Chris Aber to attend his funeral, attorney Michael Augustine said.

Rooney’s wishes are the basis for a looming court fight over who controls the legendary actor’s remains and makes funeral and burial decisions, Augustine said.

While Rooney disinherited his children, his wife and all but one of her children in a will he signed just weeks before his death, court papers suggest there is not much in his estate to fight over. His personal property is valued at just $18,000 despite an unmatched 90-year film career.

Augustine, who served as Rooney’s conservator, said in a court filing that he believed Rooney’s estranged wife, Jan Rooney, and her son, Christopher Aber, would attempt to remove Rooney’s body from Forest Lawn Memorial Park’s mortuary.

Remembering Hollywood star Mickey Rooney 02:18

A Los Angeles judge signed a handwritten order Tuesday preventing anyone from removing Rooney’s remains until he holds a hearing on Friday. Augustine, who is named as estate executor in the will, is asking for that authority.

Attorney Yevgeny Belous, who works with lawyer Mitchell Karasov to represent Jan Rooney, said she is the only person with authority to make the decisions.

Lawyers for both sides are “working toward the mutual goal of honoring Mickey,” perhaps with an agreement on funeral and burial arrangements, before Friday’s hearing, Belous said. “We want Mickey to have a proper ceremony,” he said. “We don’t want to drag this into a fight.”

Rooney already purchased burial plots in a cemetery in the Westlake Village area of Los Angeles County. In fact, Rooney’s mother was moved there years ago so the family would be together, Belous said.

Augustine said Rooney told him shortly before his death that he no longer wanted to be buried in the plot he purchased 15 years earlier. “Substantial intervening events” in the years since changed his wishes, but Rooney’s lack of cash prevented him from purchasing a new burial plot, he said.

Rooney expressed a desire to be interred at either a veteran’s cemetery or a Hollywood cemetery with other stars. Hollywood Forever, the final resting place for Rudolph Valentino, Cecil B. DeMille and a long list of long gone show biz A-listers, is one possibility, Augustine said.

Augustine said he doubts a deal can be made before the judge imposes a decision, since he is demanding that Aber be banned from the funeral because of Mickey Rooney’s severe dislike for the stepson who previously managed him.

Rooney won a $2.8 million judgment against Aber in a lawsuit that included accusations of elder abuse. Aber has yet to pay the judgment, Augustine said.

Jan Rooney signed an agreement waiving all claims to her husband’s estate after the couple separated in June 2012 after 34 years of marriage, according to a court filing. She will benefit from Rooney’s Social Security and other pensions totaling $8,400 a month, Augustine said.

While Rooney was the highest paid actor in Hollywood 70 years ago, his personal property totaled just $18,000, according to documents accompanying his will.

The will signed by Rooney on March 11, 2014, left the entire estate to stepson Mark Rooney, one of Jan Rooney’s sons, who was the actor’s caretaker the last two years of his life.

Rooney “intentionally omitted” and disinherited his eight surviving biological children and two other stepchildren from his last marriage, the will said.

Rooney had no negative feelings toward his surviving children, but they were all financially better off than he was, Augustine said. He believed what little he had to leave should go to Mark Rooney and his wife, because they had been taking good care of him in the final two years, Augustine said.

None of the others “ever changed one of Mickey’s Depends,” Augustine said.

A probate hearing is scheduled for May 12 to start the process of probating the actor’s will.

XFINITY Voice Introduces Free Phone Calls Over WiFi

“We continue to enhance our Xfinity Voice service by adding new features consumers have come to expect from smartphones and mobile technology,” said Cathy Avgiris, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Data and Communications Services. “These new tools enable customers to stay connected to their home phone service and take it with them virtually wherever they go.”

WiFi and 4G, 3G Enabled Outbound Calling
Using their home phone number and the new Voice 2go feature of the newly redesigned Xfinity Connect Mobile app (formerly the Xfinity Mobile app), customers can now make phone calls and send text messages for free and calls made within a WiFi network, such as in a customer’s home or on a public WiFi hotspot, are free. Alternatively, calls can be made using a customer’s 4G or 3G wireless data plan, which don’t use wireless minutes. As was announced recently, customers also can send and receive text messages domestically and internationally to more than 40 countries, including Canada, Brazil, China and, soon, Mexico.

    Advanced Call Forwarding
With the Xfinity Voice Advanced Call Forwarding feature, customers can automatically forward phone calls made to their home phone number to up to four additional phones or devices so they will never miss a call. A customer can set up the service to ring on the work phone in their office, their work-issued cell phone, personal cell phone or even a vacation rental’s phone. The service works with virtually any phone, including iPhones and Android-powered devices, and when calls are forwarded to the Xfinity Connect Mobile app, customers can even receive calls on iPads and iPod touches.

    Personal Phone Numbers
Xfinity Voice also now offers up to four Personal Phone Numbers, which can be assigned to family members, and are separate from the primary account holder’s phone number. Personal Phone Numbers work within the Xfinity Connect Mobile app so users can make calls and text for free when on a WiFi network, either in the home or on the go. This feature can help families cut costs because children can use an iPod touch, for example, to communicate, eliminating the need to subscribe to an additional monthly cellular plan.

These features will be coming soon to new Xfinity Voice customers. The service also will be made available to existing customers on a rolling market-by-market basis. Voice 2go is accessible through the Xfinity Connect Mobile app, which can be downloaded for free on the iTunes Store or Android Market as well as online through Xfinity Connect.

Xfinity Voice is an innovative and reliable IP-enabled service that delivers all of the functions of traditional phone service plus enhanced features like text messaging, readable voicemail, and universal caller ID, which displays calls on your TV, PC, tablet, smartphone or cordless phone. Motorcycle Helmet Law, ex-Protestor
    2011 Darwin Award Winner
    Confirmed True by Darwin

(July 2011, New York) Protesting motorcycle helmet laws, an Onondaga, NY man was participating in a bare-noggin protest ride when he was killed via flipping over the handlebars. The motorcycle accident injured the noggin of Mr. Contos, 55, fatally damaging a brain that was unable to determine the physics of the situation. Moreover, hed do it again if he could, according to his elder brother. He would have wanted it that way.

Certain laws have physics on their side, obviously, and the laws say one’s body cannot walk away from a high-speed physical impact. Laws not subject to repeal. Unprotected–you squash like a bug. Protected–you eat squash for dinner.

Since properly padded and protected men can walk away from a 90-mph crash, protection is prudent when you increase above a critical threshhold.

Prudent, but sould protection be mandatory? Robert Frost says, “I hold it to be the inalienable right of anybody to go to hell in his own way.”

Police said Phil “hit his brakes, fishtailed and went out of control, flipping him over the handlebars.” What we, the Darwin Awards committee, would like to know–and news reports don’t explain–is just how he went over the handlebars?

    What is VOIP? #voip, #voice #over #ip, #voice #over #internet #protocol

    #

    What is VOIP?

Imagine being able to use your computer to make phone calls with the help of special software and a microphone and bypassing your phone company and their charges. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Imagine no more. Making calls with your computer is here. In fact, it’s been here for many years. But not that many people know much about it, and even fewer have used it.

Making calls with your computer is called Voice over I.P. for “Voice over Internet Protocol”. Or simply “VoIP” (pronounced “voyp”). It is also referred to as broadband phone, Internet phone service and digital voice.

You Know VoIP by Other Names

There’s a good chance you know about VoIP, but just don’t know that you do. That’s because a lot of VoIP services out there go by their product names and don’t make a lot of noise about it. (That’s not a big deal and they’re not trying to hide it. It just makes marketing the service easier.)

For example, if you’ve heard of Skype. you’ve heard of one of the best-known Web-based VoIP services in use. And it’s highly popular, with more than 663 million users. Skype itself claims that at some point in March of 2012, more than 35 million people were skyping at the same time.

Skype not only lets you talk, it lets you see the person you called. However, in that case both you (the caller) and your friend (the recipient) have to be using Skype. That’s not the case for all VoIP services.

Vonage is another VoIP service that, in their words,
“lets you make U.S. and international calls using your high-speed Internet connection (VoIP) and helps you save money every month with great calling plans.”

They offer calling plans for the U.S. and Canada, as well as plans for calling certain countries. (Remember, they still aren’t a telephone company.) Their prices would likely be better than what your regular phone company could offer you. As we know, phone companies charge users for their account and, according the plan customers choose, they charge for “minutes” how long your calls last.

    How Popular Is It?

Forbes magazine reported that according to an IBISWorld study, in 2012 about 30 million Americans used Internet telephone services. The VoIP industry was expected to earn $15.4 billion in revenue the next year. And those were statistics for those who pay for the service, and didn’t include customers who make free VoIP telephone calls.

For businesses that make a lot of calls to customers and would-be customers, VoIP has grown in popularity, especially in sales-oriented jobs. In a lot of instances it’s been integrated mostly for business purposes to replace conventional phone calls, all primarily to save costs.

    Is VoIP for You?

If you’re bothered by costs for telephone usage, look into a VoIP service. Or if you like the idea of simply making free telephone calls, give it a try.

VoIP could quite likely help you save money if you’ve struggled with high phone bills and long-distance calls (to other countries, especially). You pay for your subscription to a VoIP service that you sign up for on the Web through your Internet Service Provider. If it works for you, you could dump your regular phone service.

    Take Note About Hardware.

In some cases, as with Vonage, you’ll have to add a piece of hardware to use the service an adapter that helps link your phone and computer together. With other services, there are special phones you can hook right up to your computer or your router.

With Skype, you don’t need any special phone equipment; but you’ll need to have a high-speed connection, a built-in microphone, and download their software. and so will anyone you want to talk to face to face.
