Disaster recovery options for smaller companies

New technologies are giving small companies enterprise-like DR capabilities

The growing number of natural disasters and the rise in data loss has increased the significance of having an effective disaster recovery (DR) strategy. Thankfully new capabilities are helping smaller companies keep pace. Here’s a look at the prominent trends shaping disaster recovery today:

* Cloud Services: As the adoption of cloud services increases, enterprises are realizing the cloud can become part of their disaster recovery plan. Instead of buying dedicated resources in case of a disaster, cloud computing allows companies to pay for long-term data storage on a pay-per-use basis, and to only pay for servers if they have a need to run them for an actual disaster or test.

Cloud-based disaster recovery gives businesses the potential for a lower cost, faster and more flexible recovery solution for backing up data. Cloud based DR solutions can provide small- to medium-sized businesses with enterprise level DR capability at a reasonable cost. At minimum, smaller companies can store critical data sets in the cloud so that in the event of a disaster it has the ability to recover critical business systems quickly. Prior to cloud based solutions most DR strategies for these organizations were either cost prohibitive or largely adhoc. With the advances in cloud solutions, smaller organizations can implement DR strategies which provide enterprise class protection.

* Virtualization: Server virtualization has become a key component of the disaster recovery plan for many businesses because it enables greater flexibility with computing resources and reduces downtime. Virtualization allows businesses the potential of creating an image of an entire data center that can be quickly activated when needed, giving companies a faster recovery time at a relatively low cost.

As more companies take to virtualization, disaster recovery as a process becomes easier to deploy, especially with fast and utilitarian replication software or regular cloud-based or physical backups. Server virtualization combined with a remote copy of critical data can ensure faster recovery times objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) that are aligned to business requirements. SMB sized organizations can leverage cloud based services for both data backup and servers to create a viable DR solution for critical business systems without huge expense.

* Mobile Connectivity: In terms of disaster recovery, the growing use of mobile devices in the workplace facilitates business continuity when disaster strikes because mobile devices enable people to work remotely and stay connected in the event of a disaster. This keeps business operations functioning and minimizes downtime.

However, as mobility trends gain further traction, it is important for a company to remember to back up employees’ mobile devices as well. When disaster strikes, it will likely be mobility that helps a business quickly get back to work. The advances in mobile technologies such as smartphones and tablets are growing at a phenomenal pace as is the use of these devices for collaboration and social networking. In a disaster situation users can leverage these devices to stay connected and productive.

* Social networking: Like mobile devices, social networking provides another avenue for people, internal or external to the organization, to stay in contact during or after a disaster. Social media can be leveraged as an alternate medium to provide effective, vital crisis management in a disaster, improving emergency communications and reducing the risk of dependency on more traditional methods such as email and cellular telecommunications.

* Managed disaster recovery: Organizations are realizing they cannot rely solely on in-house IT staff to deliver a repeatable recovery response in a crisis. As a result, there is a growing consensus that disaster recovery should be managed and delivered by third party providers or professionals who are entirely focused on disaster recovery. There has been an increasing focus on managed solutions, delivered on behalf of an organization, which provide highly available, automated DR systems with data replication for delivering proven recovery.

Most organizations have traditionally believed that having data backed up and stored offsite is sufficient to ensure data recovery and maintenance of business operations. Well executed backup and restore solutions do not guarantee a well-defined disaster recovery plan however. Disaster recovery solutions require alignment to business risk and regular testing neither of which have typically been priorities in backup solutions. In recent years, events such as the 9/11 attacks and the tsunami in Japan have caused many organizations to reassess their overall data protection strategies for data backup and recovery, disaster recovery and business continuity as well as long-term retention and security of their data.

* Switch from tape-based to electronic-based vaulting: Many organizations are redesigning their DR solutions to leverage more data replication and reduce the dependency on backups as the primary DR strategy for recovery. The higher latency associated with some of the traditional recovery solutions such as tape back-up has resulted in the adoption of more flexible and cost-effective technologies such as software replication. Many organizations have migrated from tape based DR solutions to disk based ones and from tape based vaulting to electronic based vaulting such as software replication, continuous data protection, backup to remote libraries, etc.

* Recovery point objectives. RPO should align to targets defined in the DR plan, particularly for business-critical applications and data stores. Zero data loss scenarios may some combination of the above mentioned data protection strategies. In a DR plan, the RPO and the RTO (recovery time objectives) need to be defined based on business need and criticality. The DR plan should also define what systems need to be in place (and where they should be located) to get the key business applications up and running again. Often, critical system and application RTOs are shorter than the typical 24-hour interval associated with daily backups, so other data protection technologies and strategies such as remote replication or mirroring, snapshots or point in time copies, or continuous data protection technologies may need to be implemented.

Finally the cost of DR solutions needs to be carefully balanced against the business risk and cost of downtime. To address this challenge, many businesses are reviewing cloud-based backup and storage options for disaster recovery. With the need to protect data and maintain continuity of business operations remaining high for organizations worldwide, ISG expects these disaster recovery trends described above to accelerate over the next few years.

Futures Options Writing

Have you ever wondered who sells the futures options that most people buy? These people are known as the option writers/sellers. Their sole objective is to collect the premium paid by the option buyer. Option writing can also be used for hedging purposes and reducing risk. An option writer has the exact opposite to gain as the option buyer. The writer has unlimited risk and a limited profit potential, which is the premium of the option minus commissions. When writing naked futures options your risk is unlimited, without the use of stops. This is why we recommend exiting positions once a market trades through an area you perceived as strong support or resistance. So why would anyone want to write an option? Here are a few reasons:

  1. Most futures options expire worthless and out of the money. Therefore, the option writer is collecting the premium the option buyer paid.
  2. There are three ways to win as an option writer. A market can go in the direction you thought, it can trade sideways and in a channel, or it can even go slowly against you but not through your strike price. The advantage is time decay.
  3. The writer believes the futures contract will not reach a certain strike price by the expiration date of the option. This is known as naked option selling.
  4. To hedge against a futures position. For example: someone who goes long cocoa at 850 can write a 900 strike price call option with about one month of time until option expiration. This allows you to collect the premium of the call option if cocoa settles below 900, based on option expiration. It also allows you to make a profit on the actual futures contract between 851 and 900. This strategy also lowers your margin on the trade and should cocoa continue lower to 800, you at least collect some premium on the option you wrote. Risk lies if cocoa continues to decline because you only collect a certain amount of premium and the futures contract has unlimited risk the lower it goes.

Cannon Trading Company Inc. believes in writing options on futures. but advises against doing it without the advice and expertise of a knowledgeable broker or specialist. Be strict when choosing which futures options to write and don’t believe in writing options on futures as your only strategy. Using the same strategy every month on a single market is bound to burn you one month, because you end up writing options on futures when you shouldn’t. Cannon Trading Co. Inc. believes you should treat option writing just like futures trading. We believe you should stay with the major trend when writing futures options, with rare exceptions. Use market pullbacks to support or resistance as opportunities to enter with the trend, by writing futures options which best fit into your objectives.

Volatility is another important factor when determining which options on futures to write, it’s generally better to sell over valued futures options then under valued futures options. Remember not to get caught up with only volatility, because options on futures with high volatility could always get higher. The bottom line is, pick the general market direction to become successful over the long-term. We also believe in using stops based on futures settlements, not based on the value of the option. If a market settles above or below an area you believed it shouldn’t and the trend appears to have reversed based on the charts, it’s probably a good time to exit your positions. We can help you understand the risks and rewards involved, as well as how to react to certain situations, i.e. if/then trading scenarios. We can either assist your option writing style or recommend trades and strategies we believe are appropriate, using the above guidelines.

Part 2: Forex Trading Terminology

Forex Trading Terminology

Options trading terminologyThe Forex market comes with its very own set of terms and jargon. So, before you go any deeper into learning how to trade the Fx market, it’s important you understand some of the basic Forex terminology that you will encounter on your trading journey…

Cross rate The currency exchange rate between two currencies, both of which are not the official currencies of the country in which the exchange rate quote is given in. This phrase is also sometimes used to refer to currency quotes which do not involve the U.S. dollar, regardless of which country the quote is provided in.

For example, if an exchange rate between the British pound and the Japanese yen was quoted in an American newspaper, this would be considered a cross rate in this context, because neither the pound or the yen is the standard currency of the U.S. However, if the exchange rate between the pound and the U.S. dollar were quoted in that same newspaper, it would not be considered a cross rate because the quote involves the U.S. official currency.

Exchange Rate The value of one currency expressed in terms of another. For example, if EUR/USD is 1.3200, 1 Euro is worth US$1.3200.

Pip – The smallest increment of price movement a currency can make. Also called point or points. For example, 1 pip for the EUR/USD = 0.0001 and 1 pip for the USD/JPY = 0.01.

Leverage Leverage is the ability to gear your account into a position greater than your total account margin. For instance, if a trader has $1,000 of margin in his account and he opens a $100,000 position, he leverages his accOptions trading terminologyount by 100 times, or 100:1. If he opens a $200,000 position with $1,000 of margin in his account, his leverage is 200 times, or 200:1. Increasing your leverage magnifies both gains and losses.

To calculate the leverage used, divide the total value of your open positions by the total margin balance in your account. For example, if you have $10,000 of margin in your account and you open one standard lot of USD/JPY (100,000 units of the base currency) for $100,000, your leverage ratio is 10:1 ($100,000 / $10,000). If you open one standard lot of EUR/USD for $150,000 (100,000 x EURUSD 1.5000) your leverage ratio is 15:1 ($150,000 / $10,000).

Margin The deposit required to open or maintain a position. Margin can be either free or used . Used margin is that amount which is being used to maintain an open position, whereas free margin is the amount available to open new positions. With a $1,000 margin balance in your account and a 1% margin requirement to open a position, you can buy or sell a position worth up to a notional $100,000. This allows a trader to leverage his account by up to 100 times or a leverage ratio of 100:1.

If a trader s account falls below the minimum amount required to maintain an open position, he will receive a margin call requiring him to either add more money into his or her account or to close the open position. Most brokers will automatically close a trade when the margin balance falls below the amount required to keep it open. The amount required to maintain an open position is dependent on the broker and could be 50% of the original margin required to open the trade.

Spread The difference between the sell quote and the buy quote or the bid and offer price. For example, if EUR/USD quotes read 1.3200/03, the spread is the difference between 1.3200 and 1.3203, or 3 pips. In order to break even on a trade, a position must move in the direction of the trade by an amount equal to the spread.

• The major Forex pairs and their nicknames:

Options trading terminology

• Understanding Forex currency pair quotes:

You will need to understand how to properly read a currency pair quote before you start trading them. So, let’s get started with this:

The exchange rate of two currencies is quoted in a pair, such as the EURUSD or the USDJPY. The reason for this is because in any foreign exchange transaction you are simultaneously buying one currency and selling another. If you were to buy the EURUSD and the euro strengthened against the dollar, you would then be in a profitable trade. Here’s an example of a Forex quote for the euro vs. the U.S. dollar:

Options trading terminology

The first currency in the pair that is located to the left of the slash mark is called the base currency, and the second currency of the pair that’s located to the right of the slash market is called the counter or quote currency.

If you buy the EUR/USD (or any other currency pair), the exchange rate tells you how much you need to pay in terms of the quote currency to buy one unit of the base currency. In other words, in the example above, you have to pay 1.32105 U.S. dollars to buy 1 euro.

If you sell the EUR/USD (or any other currency pair), the exchange rate tells you how much of the quote currency you receive for selling one unit of the base currency. In other words, in the example above, you will receive 1.32105 U.S. dollars if you sell 1 euro.

An easy way to think about it is like this: the BASE currency is the BASIS for the trade. So, if you buy the EURUSD you are buying euro’s (base currency) and selling dollars (quote currency), if you sell the EURUSD you are selling euro’s (base currency) and buying dollars (quote currency). So, whether you buy or sell a currency pair, it is always based upon the first currency in the pair; the base currency.

The basic point of Forex trading is to buy a currency pair if you think its base currency will appreciate (increase in value) relative to the quote currency. If you think the base currency will depreciate (lose value) relative to the quote currency you would sell the pair.

Options trading terminologyBid Price – The bid is the price at which the market (or your broker) will buy a specific currency pair from you. Thus, at the bid price, a trader can sell the base currency to their broker.

Ask Price – The ask price is the price at which the market (or your broker) will sell a specific currency pair to you. Thus, at the ask price you can buy the base currency from your broker.

Bid/Ask Spread – The spread of a currency pair varies between brokers and it is the difference between the bid and ask the price.

What this means is that the tax-free dividends and interest earned in the Coronation Tax-Free Investment are immediately put to work by being automatically re-invested. This results in your child s investment growing at an ever-increasing rate, year after year. Over the long term, this can make an enormous difference.

Treating Drug Addiction – What To Do If You Learn You Have

    #

    Addict In The Family

So, you have just found out that a family member or close friend is a heroin addict. It may come as quite a shock. It may also explain a lot of unusual observations over a long period.

This may happen by chance or when suspicious goings on are looked into. After following some initial clues, investigations by a parent or other loved-one may reveal the evidence. This might include the actual drugs or drug-using equipment such as a smoking bong, needle, syringe, tourniquet, sterile water containers or a burned spoon, foils or spent rubber caps. Alternatively, it may occur in the context of a crisis such as an overdose, serious legal charge or the discovery of medical problems such as thrombosis, HIV or hepatitis.

In yet another scenario, the drug user may just come out and say, ‘Look, I’m a junkie! Please take me as I am. I am sorry for all the trouble I have caused and I want to give it another try.’

Loved-ones often overlook the evidence of drug use. They may ascribe things to ‘a difficult time’, nerves, growing pains, work troubles, illness or other more palatable shortcomings.

The discovery of unequivocal proof of drug use may be devastating. Reactions vary from rejection and hostility to even further denial of the problem. With time, patience and understanding, most of these tensions can be overcome and previous harmonious relationships restored and even improved.

The majority of addicts by this stage have deceived people around them and some have committed robberies or other schemes to generate income for drugs. Few of them are proud of it, but some try to justify such behaviour. Society, they say, has placed them in the untenable position of being addicted to a drug which is illegal.

A small number of addicts first received narcotics in the context of medical or dental treatment. Finding the medical profession unable to treat their addiction, they may have moved to illicit drugs.

The commonest illicit narcotics in Sydney are heroin and black market methadone. In Western Australia and New Zealand ‘homebake’ is most commonly found. Raw opium is popular in India while brown impure heroin is found in Russia. In Poland, a codeine based mixture called ‘compot’ is the most frequently used opioid. For discussion and explanation of individual drug categories, see appendix at the end of this book.

It is important not to tell too many people about someone’s addiction. Number one, they may not understand, and secondly it may be none of their business. The stigma is very hard to lose with some people who have fixed ideas about addiction. One reason for this is the poor results from previous approaches to treatment with the experience of repeated relapses to drug or alcohol use. Modern enlightened therapy is more likely to result in an integrated patient much earlier than traditional approaches which often emphasise segregation for extended periods.

Doctors use numerous euphemisms for drug addiction. One common term for a heroin addict is an intravenous drug user IVDU although this term may also be applied to users of other injected drugs such as amphetamine and cocaine. Other terms used in medical classification are ‘nervous disorder’, ‘substance abuse’, ‘chemical dependency’, ‘morphinism’ and ‘compulsive self medication’. The legal terms ‘self administration’, ‘possession’, ‘narcotic trafficking’, ‘personal use’, and the like all have certain definitions in different jurisdictions.

The old term ‘nervous breakdown’ is not a single medical diagnosis, but is used by some to mean a temporary inability to function due to psychiatric illness. Such conditions include depression, obsessive compulsive disorders, schizophrenia, alcoholism and drug addiction. These may have their origins in disorders as varied as migraine, stroke or shingles.

Heroin addicts should always be frank with their own doctor about what drugs they are using. Drug addiction itself is a treatable condition and its complications may also require medical intervention. The physician should know the full drug history, social circumstances and previous interventions. An examination and pathology testing will reveal important information about suitability for treatment, work or travel. It will also help with the prognosis of infectious diseases.

All doctors are familiar with of the nature of narcotic use and its medical consequences. A small number may be unsympathetic and judgemental. Another group will simply be unfamiliar with drug addiction or its treatment since, until recently, this has not been covered in the medical course. Most doctors are open minded and willing to learn. They also have access to drug and alcohol specialist services and will be guided by their advice.

The answer to this question is simpler than it may appear. One should behave exactly as one would on learning of any other serious problem involving a loved one. Just as if the person had diabetes, angina or HIV, it is important not to panic. Try not to judge, even if you have been hurt. The addicted person probably also hurts for previous transgressions. Learn what you can about the condition. When seeking expert help, be aware that this is a field where there are a lot of self-styled ‘experts’. Trained addiction specialists are attached to most large hospitals and most psychiatrists are also familiar with this area.

It is often helpful for relatives or loved ones to attend such a specialist, counsellor or self help group together with the addicted person. This gives an important opportunity for associates to assess the nature and quality of the treatment being considered. They can ventilate any misgivings with the parties involved and ask questions. It should also give them confidence in treatment directions and how they can help to assist in these efforts.

There are self-help groups for family members. Nar-Anon and Al-Anon members’ lives have been affected by drugs and alcohol abuse of others. They use each other’s experiences to gain strength and resolve by example and faith. While these groups follow abstinence orientated philosophies, there are equally genuine groups supporting ‘harm minimisation’ philosophies ie. accepting continued use of drugs in a more controlled manner . Methadone support groups and ‘controlled drinking’ or smoking are further examples of this.

Help for family members is also to be had from the local doctor. There are also many pharmacists who are familiar with this field. Drug and alcohol counsellors may be found at some community care centres.

It is best for relatives and others who are close to the addict not to offer advice, however tempting it may be. In our effort to understand, it is best to offer support and sympathy, even when these do not come readily. If circumstances are such that this is not possible at the time, it is best to be frank about one’s feelings, but still to leave the way open for future reconciliation.

Do not worsen the situation by giving money which could be used for drugs. If possible, offer assistance with transport, bills or arrangements which are documented to be for treatment purposes, and always pay by non-negotiable cheque or credit card authority.

Do not be enticed into debates about whether abstinence is the best philosophy. Each type of treatment is ‘correct’ for the right person at the right time. Equally unrewarding are arguments about why someone originally used drugs or what made them relapse on this occasion.
