Survey Questions 101: Do You Make any of These 7 Question Writing Mistakes? #answers #for #homework

#questions and answer

#

Survey Questions 101: Do You Make any of These 7 Question Writing Mistakes?

Details, details, details. Creating surveys that yield actionable insights is about details. And writing effective questions is the first step.

We see common mistakes that keep survey questions from being effective all the time.

Here are the 7 most common:

Survey Question Mistake #1: Failing to Avoid Leading Words / Questions

Subtle wording differences can produce great differences in results. “Could,” “should,” and “might” all sound about the same, but may produce a 20% difference in agreement to a question.

In additions, strong words such as “force” and “prohibit” represent control or action and can bias your results.

The government should force you to pay higher taxes.

No one likes to be forced, and no one likes higher taxes. This agreement scale question makes it sound doubly bad to raise taxes.

Wording alternatives can be developed. How about simple statements such as: The government should increase taxes, or the government needs to increase taxes.

How would you rate the career of legendary outfielder Joe Dimaggio?

This question tells you Joe Dimaggio is a legendary outfielder. This type of wording can bias respondents.

How about replacing the word “legendary” with “baseball” as in: How would you rate the career of baseball outfielder Joe Dimaggio?

Survey Question Mistake #2: Failing to Give Mutually Exclusive Choices

Multiple choice response options should be mutually exclusive so that respondents can make clear choices. Don’t create ambiguity for respondents.

Review your survey and identify ways respondents could get stuck with either too many or no correct answers.

What is your age?

What answer would you select if you were 10, 20, or 30? Questions like this will frustrate a respondent and invalidate your results.

What type of vehicle do you own?

This question has the same problem. What if the respondent owns a truck, hybrid, convertible, cross-over, motorcycle, or no vehicle at all?

Survey Question Mistake #3: Not Asking Direct Questions

Questions that are vague and do not communicate your intent can limit the usefulness of your results. Make sure respondents know what you’re asking.

What suggestions do you have for improving Tom’s Tomato Juice?

This question may be intended to obtain suggestions about improving taste, but respondents will offer suggestions about texture, the type of can or bottle, about mixing juices, or even suggestions relating to using tomato juice as a mixer or in recipes.

What do you like to do for fun?

Finding out that respondents like to play Scrabble isn’t what the researcher is looking for, but it may be the response received. It is unclear that the researcher is asking about movies vs. other forms of paid entertainment. A respondent could take this question in many directions.

Survey Question Mistake #4: Forgetting to Add a “Prefer Not to Answer” Option

Sometimes respondents may not want or be able to provide the information requested.

Questions about income, occupation, finances, family life, personal hygiene, and personal, political, or religious beliefs can be too intrusive and be rejected by the respondent.

Privacy is an important issue to most people. Incentives and assurances of confidentiality can make it easier to obtain private information.

While current research does not support that PNA (Prefer Not to Answer) options increase data quality or response rates, many respondents appreciate this non-disclosure option.

Furthermore, different cultural groups may respond differently. One recent study found that while U.S. respondents skip sensitive questions, Asian respondents often discontinue the survey entirely.

What is your race?

What is your age?

Did you vote in the last election?

What are your religious beliefs?

What are your political beliefs?

What is your annual household income?

These questions should be asked only when absolutely necessary. In addition, they should always include an option to not answer. (e.g. “Prefer Not to Answer”).

Survey Question Mistake #5: Failing to Cover All Possible Answer Choices

Do you have all of the options covered? If you are unsure, conduct a pretest using “Other (please specify)” as an option.

If more than 10% of respondents (in a pretest or otherwise) select “other,” you are probably missing an answer. Review the “Other” text your test respondents have provided and add the most frequently mentioned new options to the list.

You indicated that you eat at Joe s fast food once every 3 months. Why don t you eat at Joe s more often?

There isn t a location near my house

I don t like the taste of the food

Never heard of it

This question doesn’t include other options, such as healthiness of the food, price/value or some “other” reason. Over 10% of respondents would probably have a problem answering this question.

Survey Question Mistake #6: Not Using Unbalanced Scales Carefully

Unbalanced scales may be appropriate for some situations and promote bias in others.

For instance, a hospital might use an Excellent Very Good Good Fair scale where “Fair” is the lowest customer satisfaction point because they believe “Fair” is absolutely unacceptable and requires correction.

The key is to correctly interpret the scale. If “Fair” is the lowest point on a scale, then a result slightly better than fair is probably not a good one.

Additionally, scale points should represent equi-distant points on a scale. That is, they should have the same equal conceptual distance from one point to the next.

For example, researchers have shown the points to be nearly equi-distant on the strongly disagree–disagree–neutral–agree–strongly agree scale.

Set your bottom point as the worst possible situation and top point as the best possible, then evenly spread the labels for your scale points in-between.

What is your opinion of Crazy Justin s auto-repair?

This question puts the center of the scale at fantastic, and the lowest possible rating as “Pretty Good.” This question is not capable of collecting true opinions of respondents.

Survey Question Mistake #7: Not Asking Only One Question at a Time

There is often a temptation to ask multiple questions at once. This can cause problems for respondents and influence their responses.

Review each question and make sure it asks only one clear question.

What is the fastest and most economical Internet service for you?

This is really asking two questions. The fastest is often not the most economical.

How likely are you to go out for dinner and a movie this weekend?

Even though “dinner and a movie” is a common term, this is two questions as well. It is best to separate activities into different questions or give respondents these options:

Dinner and Movie

Summary

While not totally inclusive, these seven tips are common offenders in building quality questions.

Focus on creating clear questions and having an understandable, appropriate, and complete set of answer choices. Great questions and great answer choices lead to great research success.

What are some mistakes you ve made that you wish you wouldn t have? Comment below and let s discuss!

Latin American Guide: History Of The Cha Cha Dance #answer.com #dictionary

#cha cha answers

#

By Melanie LaPatin

Everyone knows how to dance the Cha Cha, even if they have never danced before in their life. Everyone knows the beat, One, Two, CHA-CHA-CHA! In fact, when it first caught on in America around 1954, it was known as the Cha Cha Cha.

The Bobby Rydell song begins, Baby, baby, come on sway me, drive me crazy. Do the Cha Cha Cha. Theres a recent song by David Nash called Cha Cha like Charo, referring to the blonde Latin bombshell known for being unabashedly Latin in all her unbridled glory. Born in Murcia, Spain, Charos real name is Mara Rosario Pilar Martnez Molina Moquiere de les Esperades Santa Ana Romanguera y de la Najosa Rasten and she helped popularize Latin music in the United States.

Immensely popular for the beginning, the Cha Cha is a dance that has never gone out of style and is a perennial favorite at weddings. The dance is very easy to learn, and once you have the basic pattern down, you can use as much of the dance floor ” or as little ” as you like.

You can dance it in a crowded room or a wide open space. Cha Cha came from the Mambo, as people began dancing to the distinct background beat. Originally called the Triple Mambo, the Cha Cha soon spun off on its own.

Havana, Cuba was one of the hottest hot spots to go in the 1940s. Sky Masterson takes Miss Sarah Brown to Cuba to impress her and win a bet in the Broadway musical, Guys and Dolls. Tennessee Williams and Ernest Hemingway visited Cuba and the experience influenced their writings. Havana was an extremely popular resort for the rich and famous who could get there.

The most famous American dance bands as well as many outstanding Latin orchestras native to Cuba played in the city’s casinos. It was here that the Mambo was born, and the Cha Cha Cha was an offshoot of that dance.

The Cha Cha was originally one of the Mambo moves, where two slow steps were followed by three quick steps, changing weight on each step. This figure from the Mambo became the basic step of the Cha Cha. Given its close association with the Rumba and Mambo, it should be no surprise that the Cha Cha is very similar in style. The feet remain close to the floor as in most Latin dances. The hips move free freely, although the upper body is usually erect and the dancers glide across the floor at approximately 126 beats per minute in 4/4 time.

In 1952, an English dance teacher named Pierre Lavelle travelled to Cuba, and brought his version back to the British Isles. The famous American dance instructor Arthur Murray thought it would be easier to learn if he simplified the dance to a 1, 2, 3, Cha Cha rhythm. Although this amounted to pretty much the same thing, the Cha Cha slowed down somewhat and became a bit more mechanical for Murrays students.

To this day, the Cha Cha has remained one of the most popular dances in competitions and dance halls. Less sensual than the Mambo and less erotic than the Bolero, it is just plain fun to dance. In the words of the immortal Sam Cooke, Everybody loves the Cha Cha Cha! – 30231

Illusions

If you stare at the following picture long enough, you should see a giraffe.

Gotcha! But the rest of these optical illusions are on the level.

What are illusions? Illusions trick us into perceiving something differently than it actually exists, so what we see does not correspond to physical reality. Hence, the word illusion comes from the Latin verb illudere meaning, “to mock.” In addition, some illusions show us one thing in a picture, while someone else sees something entirely different in the same picture.

Research scientists must be sure that the results of their work are not “illusory” in nature. They need to accurately report what “is,” rather than their general “impression” of “what is.” So, many times a scientist will repeat an experiment many times, or in different laboratories, to ensure that their results were valid. Science is only “good science” when anyone can repeat the experiment and get the same results.

Examples of Rebuses #instant #answers #to #questions

#rebus puzzle answers

#

Rebus rhymes and stories are great for young children who are just beginning to learn to read. There are pictures instead of words throughout the story and rhyme. These can really make reading fun, entertaining, and hopefully, help children develop a love of reading.

Rebus Stories and Rhymes

Some rebus stories have the picture and the word to help kids learn to read. Some have only the picture and child fills in the word.

There are many sources for rebuses on the Internet including:

  • Enchanted Learning.com has Mother Goose rebus rhymes and others. They have both the picture and the word.
  • At ABC Teach. there are rebus stories with the picture only.

Rebus Puzzles

Another type of rebus is a puzzle using words and numbers, sometimes called a pictogram puzzle. Rebus puzzles use pictures, symbols, and letters to represent a word or words.

These are really great for kids or adults because you have to use both sides of your brain. They are like mental exercises for a healthy mind.

The key to unlocking a rebus word puzzle, or a word picture puzzle, is the location of the letters or words. That has a bearing on the answer.

Here are a few examples:

HEELS which means head over heels.

  • 1 2 BLAME which means one to blame.
  • 1,2,3,4,5,6. 38,39,40 LIFE which means “life begins at 40.”
  • FAREDCE which means “red in the face.”
  • WINEEEE which means “win with ease.”
  • PumPkinPie which means “piece (Ps) of pumpkin pie.”
  • JOBINJOB which means “in between jobs.”
  • SYMPHON. which means “unfinished symphony.”
  • another 1 which means “one right after another.”
  • T_RN which means “no U turn.”
  • counCLOSEters which means “close encounters.”
  • WORL which means “world without end.”

A famous use of a rebus puzzle was the television game show “Concentration.” It was a matching game, but each match uncovered a part of a rebus puzzle. The rebus puzzle was sometimes like an equation, where you had to add letters and pictures together to come up with the words they were representing.

Some examples of rebuses are:

  • 2 = to or too, 4 = for, 8 = ate, R = are
  • F + (picture of an ear) = fear
  • D + (picture of a light) = delight
  • GR + 8 = great
  • L + 8 = late
  • 2 + L = tool
  • 4 + T = fort

Pictures and symbols commonly used in rebus puzzles:

  • a bee = sound of be
  • a sheep = sound of ewe

There are many sites online that have rebus puzzles.

More Word Games

If you enjoy word games and puzzles or are looking for some rebuses for classroom use, here are some Internet resources which are particularly good for teachers:

  • Word searches – Addicting Games.com. It is timed and has hard words, so it is not for young children.
  • Word puzzles – If you have watched the TV game show Lingo, you can play it online at Big Money Arcade.com. It has 1260 puzzle words and you have five tries to guess the word. If you guess one or more of the letters, the letter(s) will appear on the next line, if they are in the right spot. If not, the correct letter that is in the wrong spot will be highlighted with a gold circle. They also have several hints to help you and some possible next letters at the bottom of the puzzle.
  • Word games – East of the Web has 10 games. In Cryptoquote, you have to figure out the code to read a quote. Your powers of deduction are needed for Codeword, and Definetime tests your knowledge of word definitions. There is a new Word Search game every day, and a multiplayer game similar to Scrabble, but you can place letters on top of existing letters, like in the game Upwords.

Do you have a good example to share? Add your example here.

Please read this instruction about how to contest a question before you log in to GOAPS.

The drop down menu of question numbers in GOAPS has question numbers from 1 to 65 for all papers except GG, XE and XL. For all papers other than GG, XE and XL, the first ten questions are GA, i.e, question numbers 1 to 10 are GA questions. The question numbers 11 to 65 in the drop down menu correspond to questions 1 to 55 in the question paper respectively. Thus, for example, question number 37 in the drop down menu has to be chosen if you want to challenge the answer of question number 27 in the subject part of the question paper PDF.

For GG, the first ten questions are from GA, i.e. question numbers 1 to 10 are GA questions. The question numbers 11 to 35 in the drop down menu correspond to questions 1 to 25 of the of the common section (Geology) in the question paper PDF. The question numbers 36 to 65 in the drop down menu correspond to questions 26 to 55 of the Optional Section I (Geology) in the question paper PDF. The question numbers 66 to 95 in the drop down menu correspond to questions 26 to 55 of the Optional Section II (Geophysics).

For XE, the questions in the question paper are arranged according to sections, i.e. first the GA section, then sections A to G. The drop down menu is for questions from 1 to 153. Note the following for the drop down menu:

Q. 1-10 correspond to GA
Q.11-21 correspond to XE-A
Q.22-43 correspond to XE-B
Q.44-65 correspond to XE-C
Q.66-87 correspond to XE-D
Q.88-109 correspond to XE-E
Q.110-131 correspond to XE-F
Q.132-153 correspond to XE-G

Thus, for example, question number 112 in the drop down menu corresponds to question 3 in XE-F paper.

For XL, the questions in the question paper are arranged according to sections, i.e. first the GA section, then sections H to M. The drop down menu is for questions from 1 to 125. Note the following for the drop down menu:

Q. 1-10 correspond to GA
Q.11-25 correspond to XL-H
Q.26-45 correspond to XL-I
Q.46-65 correspond to XL-J
Q.66-85 correspond to XL-K
Q.85-105 correspond to XL-L
Q.106-125 correspond to XL-M

Thus, for example, question number 112 in the drop down menu corresponds to question 7 in XL-M paper.

    Start: 04:15pm – End: 05:15pm

“A strongly interacting massive particle (SIMP) is a good candidate for dark matter (DM) because its self-interaction can address some astrophysical offsets, such as the “core vs cusp” problem and the “too-big-to-fail” problem. A low energy effective theory of a strongly interacting non-Abelian gauge theory gives a simple realization of the SIMP mechanism in a dark sector, though we need to introduce a nontrivial interaction between the Standard Model (SM) sector and the dark sector to maintain kinetic equilibrium. In this talk, I will first explain a SIMP model in a strong non-Abelian gauge theory with a singlet field in the hidden sector. Assuming a mixing between the singlet field and the SM Higgs field, we can maintain the kinetic equilibrium between the hidden and SM sectors. The mixing effect leads to signals for future collider experiments, direct DM detection experiments, and beam-dump experiments. Then I will explain a SIMP model in an Abelian gauge theory that is confined due to a monopole condensation. This model is much simpler because the monopole plays the roles of U(1) confinement and mediator between the hidden and SM sectors.”

Title: “Current aspects of topological superconductivity”

Abstract: Recent experiments have provided mounting evidence for the existence of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in condensed-matter systems. Until the long-term goal of braiding MBSs is achieved, one is prompted to ask: what is the next step in the study of topological superconductivity and MBSs? In my talk I will discuss two topics relating to this question. In the first part I will examine the possibility of, not only detecting the Majoranas, but also witnessing some of their exotic properties. In particular their non-local nature, or in other words, the fact that the MBS is half a fermion whose occupation is encoded in a nonlocal way. I will show that current cross correlations in a T-junction with a single MBS exhibit universal features, related to the Majorana nonlocality. This will be contrasted with the case of an accidental low-energy Andreev bound state. In the second part I will discuss the possibility of realizing a different topological phase hosting MBSs in currently available experimental platforms. This will be a topological superconducting phase which is protected by time-reversal symmetry, and which is characterized by having a Kramers’ pair of MBSs at each end. As I will discuss, repulsive interactions are a necessary ingredient for the realization of this phase. I will present a mechanism, based on the interplay between repulsive interactions and proximity to a conventional superconductor, which drives the system into the topological phase. The effect of interactions is studied analytically using both a mean-field approach and the renormalization group. We corroborate our conclusions numerically using DMRG.

Title: Soliton motion, dissipation, and death in quantum superfluids

Abstract: Solitons are fascinating non-linear phenomena that occur in a diverse array of classical and quantum systems. In particular, they are known to exist in quantum superfluids, and have been demonstrated experimentally in Bose-Einstein condensates and fermionic superfluids. In this talk, I will first review the general theory of solitons in superfluids and present an exact solution to the problem of a moving soliton in a one-dimensional superconductor. Connections to the inverse scattering method and supersymmetric quantum mechanics will be emphasized. Using these exact methods, the full soliton spectrum will be derived along with its “inertial” and “gravitational” masses. The former will be shown to be orders of magnitude larger than the latter. This results in slow motion of the soliton, consistent with recent MIT experiments. In the second part of my talk, I will discuss the soliton decay and derive the quasiclassical equations of motion containing a non-local in time friction force. Interestingly, Ohmic friction is absent in the integrable setup and the Markovian approximation gives rise to the Abraham-Lorentz force (i.e. a term proportional to the derivative of the soliton’s acceleration), which is known from classical electrodynamics of a charged particle interacting with its own radiation. These Abraham-Lorentz equations famously contain a fundamental causality paradox, where the soliton/particle interacts with excitations/radiation originating from future events. We show, however, that the causality paradox is an artifact of the Markovian approximation, and our exact non-Markovian dissipative equations give rise to physical trajectories. In the end, I will show results of recent experiment that observed soliton diffusion and decay in superfluids, well described by our theory.

Relativistic electron scattering and QED

Abstract:
The results of non-perturbative relativistic electron-atom scattering calculations are presented. Hans Bethe’s work on relativistic electron scattering in the 1930’s is also discussed, together with various historical aspects of Enrico Fermi’s and Bethe’s early QED papers. The evolution of ideas related to the use of renormalization in quantum field theory are outlined.

    • We present the foundation for a holographic dictionary with depth perception. The dictionary consists of natural operators associated with CFT bilocals whose duals are simple, diffeomorphism-invariant bulk operators. These objects admit a description as fields in kinematic space, a phase space for such probes. The framework of kinematic space allows for conceptually simple derivations of many results known in the literature, including linearized Einstein’s equations, the relationship between conformal blocks and geodesic Witten diagrams, and the CFT representation of bulk local operators. Updated August 25, 2016.

    Biology

What is biology? Simply put, it is the study of life — life in all of its grandeur. From the very small algae to the very large elephant, life has a certain wonder about it. With that in mind, how do we know if something is living? Is a virus alive or dead? What are the characteristics of life? These are all very important questions with equally important answers.

    Characteristics of Life

Living things include both the visible world of animals, plants. and fungi as well as the invisible world of bacteria and viruses .

On a basic level, we can say that life is ordered. Organisms have an enormously complex organization. We re all familiar with the intricate systems of the basic unit of life, the cell .

Life can also work. No, not the daily employment variety, but living creatures can take in energy from the environment. This energy, in the form of food, is transformed to maintain metabolic processes and for survival.

Life grows and develops. This means more than just replicating or getting larger in size. Living organisms also have the ability to rebuild and repair themselves when injured.

Life can reproduce . Have you ever seen dirt reproduce? I don t think so. Life can only come from other living creatures.

Life can respond. Think about the last time you accidentally stubbed your toe. Almost instantly, you flinched back in pain. Life is characterized by this response to stimuli.

Finally, life can adapt and respond to the demands placed on it by the environment. There are three basic types of adaptations that can occur in higher organisms.

    • Reversible changes occur as a response to changes in the environment. Let s say you live near sea level and you travel to a mountainous area. You may begin to experience difficulty breathing and an increase in heart rate as a result of the change in altitude. These symptoms go away when you go back down to sea level.

    • Somatic changes occur as a result of prolonged changes in the environment. Using the previous example, if you were to stay in the mountainous area for a long time, you would notice that your heart rate would begin to slow down and you would begin to breath normally. Somatic changes are also reversible.
    • The final type of adaptation is called genotypic (caused by genetic mutation ). These changes take place within the genetic makeup of the organism and are not reversible. An example would be the development of resistance to pesticides by insects and spiders .

In summary, life is organized, works, grows, reproduces, responds to stimuli and adapts. These characteristics form the basis of the study of biology.

    Basic Principles of Biology

The foundation of biology as it exists today is based on five basic principles. They are the cell theory, gene theory. evolution, homeostasis, and laws of thermodynamics.

    • Cell Theory. all living organisms are composed of cells. The cell is the basic unit of life.
    • Gene Theory. traits are inherited through gene transmission. Genes are located on chromosomes and consist of DNA .
    • Evolution. any genetic change in a population that is inherited over several generations. These changes may be small or large, noticeable or not so noticeable.
    • Homeostasis. ability to maintain a constant internal environment in response to environmental changes.
    • Thermodynamics. energy is constant and energy transformation is not completely efficient.

    Subdiciplines of Biology

The field of biology is very broad in scope and can be divided into several disciplines. In the most general sense, these disciplines are categorized based on the type of organism studied. For example, zoology deals with animal studies, botany deals with plant studies, and microbiology is the study of microorganisms. These fields of study can be broken down further into several specialized sub-disciplines. Some of which include anatomy. cell biology. genetics. and physiology .

Ask.fm, the troubling secret playground of tweens and teens

Spy on Ask.fm’s public stream and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to middle school, dumped in the center of he-said, she-said dramas — sometimes innocuous, sometimes not. Here, hormone-crazed young boys and girls banter about their after-school plans, tease their peers, boast about their most recent hookups, and try to appear cool with expletives and graphic language.

Ask.fm is a 3-year-old question-and-answer app that’s wracked up 57 million users and is adding members at a rate of 200,000 a day. It’s spreading from kid to kid, infiltrating middle schools and high schools the same way that mobile sensations Instagram and Snapchat have.

The Latvian-run platform, launched in June 2010, resembles predecessor Formspring and offers a Web and mobile space where people create profiles so that anyone, not just other members, can ask them questions. The service was essentially a European clone of Formspring until the latter shifted focus in July of last year. Since then, Ask.fm has added about 50 million users.

Today, Ask.fm has ballooned into a parent-free digital space where kids go to goof off and escape the built-in accountability of Facebook. According to brother co-founders Mark and Ilja Terebin, Ask.fm is big in Brazil, the U.S. Italy, Russia, the U.K. Germany, Turkey, Argentina, Poland, and France, though it has a presence in 150 additional countries.

A quick glimpse at the Ask.fm stream shows young kids engaging in lighthearted banter and sexual conversations. Screenshot by Jennifer Van Grove/CNET

As a back-channel for after-school chitchat that can stay anonymous, the app often exacerbates offline dramas and has even been linked to a handful of teen suicides. The Terebins will tell you the tool simply promotes honest communication and that negativity on the service reflects society’s growing lack of moral values .

Because of its adolescent audience, common questions on Ask.fm can be harmless and adorable in what they reveal or keep secret. Do you like me? Are you going out with Alex? Why is Sarah mad at Holly?

Yet, intermixed with these ordinary tween concerns are troubling inquiries. An anonymous user asked a female teenager, “Have you struggled with an eating disorder/ depression/ self harm/ suicidal thoughts before? It’s okay if you don’t wanna answer, I just need some advice:).” The young girl’s response: “all of them. “

In the obscene spectrum, statements such as “Tits or ass,” or “you’re such a slut,” are also prevalent. There’s worse. Much worse. All there for your viewing pleasure — for anyone else’s viewing pleasure.

On Ask.fm, members pick which questions, often just statements, they want to respond to. Their answers, which can include photos and video, are posted to their profiles, as well as to a real-time feed of responses. Though hidden from public sight, this stream makes it easy for any lurker with an account to glimpse inside this secret, profanity-laden world where crushes are exposed, Snapchats and Kiks are exchanged, insecurities are latched on to, and bullies go unchecked.

The popularity of the Formspring replica may come as a shock. In April, Ask.fm racked up 13 billion page views from 180 million unique visitors, Ilja Terebin told CNET. Each visitor spends, on average, 100 minutes per month on Ask.fm.

There is no question that Ask.fm, an ad-based service that’s backed by RubyLight Fund. is predominantly a playground for youngsters. The service’s primary audience is between the ages of 13 and 25, and 50 percent of registered users are under 18, Terebin said. The numbers don’t reflect Ask.fm’s popularity with the under 13 crowd, a group that frequently fudges birth dates to gain access to apps. Still, the data confirms the obvious. Just observe the stream for a few minutes and you’ll see the youthful faces of boys and girls alongside the SMS-style vernacular — unmistakable and unpunctuated — of the Millennial generation.

These kids, it would seem from observing their behaviors, are posting their Ask.fm profile URLs to their Instagram accounts as a way to solicit questions from friends and strangers. Schools and classmates are often mentioned by name in posted questions, which suggests the platform acts as an uncensored gossip zone where anonymity masks the identity of people encountered on a daily basis.

Such an environment is ripe for digital sport that can devolve into quarrels that trickle back to school grounds. The 13-year-old daughter of a CNET colleague said that Ask.fm was the cause of frequent conflicts at her school. The service became popular with her friends, mostly kids between the ages of 12 and 14, in March. Now everyone at her school has “an Ask.fm,” she said.

“At first, I really liked it. It was interesting. friends would say inside jokes and I would try to figure out who it was ,” she said. “You could talk to your friends and they wouldn’t know. You could mess around.”

The fun stopped when inappropriate questions trickled in from people she didn’t know, a side effect of promoting her account on Instagram. Her father discovered one such comment and forced her to close the account. But the bigger drama, in the teen’s view, was when her friends started sharing their passwords with each other. Someone was blamed for something someone else wrote, things escalated, and problems arose.

So now she is back using the services she loved before: Instagram, Kik, and Snapchat. Though she sometimes misses the questions, she appreciates being distanced from Ask.fm-related drama at school.

For most adolescents, anonymous services such as Ask.fm protect them, to a degree. They’re not out to say or do extreme things, said Danah Boyd, a senior researcher for Microsoft who studies how young people use social media. They just want to hang out and goof around with their peers, without always being accountable to ever-peering adults. Yet left unsupervised, kids often find their way to trouble, intentionally or otherwise.

With privacy options like the ability to turn off anonymous questions or block users, Ask.fm should be an above-board, safe zone where members can enjoy their digital freedoms.

The site’s terms of service restricts membership to those who are at least 13 years of age, claims to require a valid name and e-mail address during the registration process, and bans obscene, vulgar, and abusive chatter. Ilja Terebin insists that Ask.fm performs automatic and manual content moderation around the clock to keep out sexually explicit posts and derogaotry language. The screenshots above suggest otherwise.

But Terebin stands by the use of anonymity, which he said allows for “true content.”

Parents in the know would probably disagree.

Ask.fm has been linked in the media to a handful of suicides. Irish teen Ciara Pugsley, 15, committed suicide in September of last year following months of online bullying, her parents said. Her Ask.fm account remains online, providing a twisted glimpse at the perverse questions she fielded before her death. Joshua Unsworth, also 15, allegedly ended his own life after being bullied on Ask.fm. The family of Anthony Stubbs, a 16-year-old suicide victim, believes Ask.fm is partially to blame and wants the site to be shut down.

Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler has urged advertisers to spend their money elsewhere. Ask.fm runs banner ads and sells sponsored questions. “This Web site is putting children at risk,” he wrote in a letter to advertisers. “A growing number of children under 13 use Ask.fm because it makes no meaningful effort to limit underage access, and these kids are being exposed to malicious anonymous postings, including racial slurs, sexual references, drug use and personal assaults.”

The Terebin brothers won’t admit to any wrongdoing, of course. Nor do they seem motivated to make changes. Negativity on Ask.fm is just a reflection of society’s shortcomings and a lack of proper education, they argue. Maybe so, but it’s an unavoidable element of the anonymized zone. For now, a parent’s best hope is that kids tire of Ask.fm and move on to the next app.

    Order of Operations #get #answers #to #questions

    #math answer

It seems that each student interpreted the problem differently, resulting in two different answers. Student 1 performed the operation of addition first, then multiplication; whereas student 2 performed multiplication first, then addition. When performing arithmetic operations there can be only one correct answer. We need a set of rules in order to avoid this kind of confusion. Mathematicians have devised a standard order of operations for calculations involving more than one arithmetic operation.

First perform any calculations inside parentheses.

Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.

Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

The above problem was solved correctly by Student 2 since she followed Rules 2 and 3. Let’s look at some examples of solving arithmetic expressions using these rules.

Evaluate each expression using the rules for order of operations.

In Examples 2 and 3, you will notice that multiplication and division were evaluated from left to right according to Rule 2. Similarly, addition and subtraction were evaluated from left to right, according to Rule 3.

When two or more operations occur inside a set of parentheses, these operations should be evaluated according to Rules 2 and 3. This is done in Example 4 below.

    Evaluate 150 (6 + 3 x 8) – 5 using the order of operations.

    150 (6 + 24) – 5

    Multiplication inside Parentheses

    150 30 – 5

    Addition inside Parentheses

    Evaluate the arithmetic expression below:

This problem includes a fraction bar (also called a vinculum), which means we must divide the numerator by the denominator. However, we must first perform all calculations above and below the fraction bar BEFORE dividing.

When evaluating arithmetic expressions, the order of operations is:

    • Simplify all operations inside parentheses.
    • Perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
    • Perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

If a problem includes a fraction bar, perform all calculations above and below the fraction bar before dividing the numerator by the denominator.

Directions: Complete each exercise by applying the rules for order of operations. Click once in an ANSWER BOX and type in your answer; then click ENTER. After you click ENTER, a message will appear in the RESULTS BOX to indicate whether your answer is correct or incorrect. To start over, click CLEAR.

    A Question of Answers

    Jackpot for Kojak and Wallach

This opening episode for Kojak s third season boasts a really strong cast with the Kojak regulars and such people as Eli Wallach, Jerry Orbach, F. Murray Abraham, Michael V. Gazzo and Jennifer Warren. The focus of the story is on Wallach who is an old friend from Astoria of Kojak.

Wallach got himself jammed up when he hid some stolen furs from a robbery in his place in the garment district. But Telly Savalas also got jammed a bit because he didn t wait for a warrant. Jennifer Warren as Wallach s lawyer is ready to pounce.

But it all might get worked out through the Feds as Jerry Orbach who is totally unrecognizable with black hair and one of the stupidest looking mustaches ever would like to use Wallach to make a case against loan shark Michael V. Gazzo. Savalas approaches Wallach and he s set up and has to go through some real terror at the hands of Gazzo s enforcer F. Murray Abraham.

In fact Wallach, Abraham, and Gazzo all give performances that could have been Emmy material. This was a really fine beginning for Kojak s third season.

Peteranswers.com: The Peter Answers Computer Prank What is it? The Peter Answers (or peteranswers.com) Computer Prank is a magical virus, pure and simple. It s spread from host to host through word of mouth and has an incubation period limited only to a carrier s access to a computer with internet connection.

How is it spread? It all starts with an initial carrier some individual who knows the secret trick to this hypnotic prank. It works like magic, and if you knows it, you most definitely have the power hypnotic power, psychic power. Once you know the magic, all you need to do is simply hop on a computer, zip to the Internet and go to peteranswers.com

Once at the site, all you have to do to memorize your audience, is draw attention to the idea that there s an entity within the Internet that can answer all of your questions. What happens next, is what reminds me of a David Blaine trick. Because it s pure magic.

Pure genius. In the first box, the keyboardist types in the petition: Peter, please answer the following: In the second box the typist enters whatever question they d like usually from the growing crowd. What is Karan’s middle name? Upon hitting the return button, Peter, from his comfortable couch at peteranswers.com, instantly answers the question. Correctly.

How does peteranswers.com work? Subtle Mind Control. Like I said, I d already lost over half the room. Even if I d ordered all computers shut down, they d still be thinking about how to do the magic trick for the rest of the day. I m not kidding. Peteranswers.com had a firm hold of people’s minds, i personally was addicted to it as peter never answered me and answered only to my friend and i wasn t letting go any time soon this kept on and on till 3 days. So I figured I might as well do a little research. With Google s help, it didn t take me long to figure it out. And once I did, I knew peteranswers.com had met it s match. As with any infectious illusion, the best way to vaccinate is to simply reveal the magic trick. There s really nothing like a quick medicine of the truth. Sure, the David Blaine impostors will be furious at having their trick exposed. But being precise this causes manic-obsessive behavior whichs are the symptoms of the Peter Answers Computer Prank virus itself.

Peteranswers.com: The Magic Tricks Revealed First, instead of typing in the petition box, Peter, please answer the. begin by instead typing: . That s right. Simply type a period. What happens next is pure magical genius. Instead of seeing what you d expect (a . ) you see a P . Then type whatever the heck you want and the rest of the phrase Peter, please answer the following appears. As long as nobody pays any attention to where your fingers are actually landing the prank works slick. The trick to the prank is to here type in the answer to whatever question you are going to ask next. When you re done just keep typing until the phrase is complete. Whenever you hit the : your cursor will jump to the next box where you ll type in the actual question. Hit return and bingo! Whatever you really typed into the petition box appears.

Now stop dilly dallying and get on over to the real Peter Answers web site and have some fun!

But Make sure you dont hurt someones feeling with lies as you know Truth Never Hides.

Sweet Dreams are Made of These: Holiday Family Feud Game: Who d you like to be caught under the mistletoe with? #funny #questions #and #answers

    #family feud questions and answers

    #

Each Christmas we have something special planned just for the adults of our family. As parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents we are thrilled at the joy that we help provide for the kidlings in our family to celebrate Christmas, our favorite being our magical annual Polar Express Christmas Eve followed by a special devotional including the reading of the Birth of Christ to remind us all of the true reason for the season and provide another opportunity for us as adults to testify of that to them. But as adults we also look forward to a time to be kids ourselves-by ourselves, usually in the form of a game compiled by myself. In the past the basis for the games have been derived from our favorite movies. our unique Dix family vernacular, or we have been the subjects ourselves. This is of course accompanied by tear-jerking laughter and intense competition, some images and moments I will never forget!

This year I thought it would be fun to revamp an old classic and do a Holiday Family Feud Game.

Of course this is where you come in.
As you know each answer on the show is proceeded by the words, “Survey Says. “
And the survey was of course asked to 100 people with the top answers on the board.
So would you be 1 of those 100 people and please answer the following 10 questions/inquiries.
    Pretty please.
Once I reach a 100 I will post the top answers so that anyone who wishes to use this little game may enjoy it with their own wonderful family this Christmas season.

Please make a comment with your answers labeled 1, 2, 3. you get the idea:)
Thank you so much for your assistance in compiling my little game.

    ***UPDATED with ANSWERS ***
*** Thank you to everyone who helped me compile these results. I had so much fun reading everyone’s responses:) The top answers from 100 people surveyed listed below each inquiry. I will let each of you determine what to do them. Some answers could be combined, but I’ll leave that up to you. Click here for a link to the basic rules for playing Family Feud. We usually play men vs women – a little dangerous but loads of heated fun. I hope this will bring lots of laughter and energy to your holiday celebrations.***

    8. Betty White 2

honorable mentions – Audrey Hepburn, Maggie Lawson, Keri Russell, Zooey Deschanel, Jennifer Gardner

This question produced a wide range of answers. Was fun to read everyone’s crushes;). Since I was not able to question 100 men or 100 women for these questions, if you’d like to continue my quest, I can email you all the responses so you can continuing tallying til you reach 100.

Wishing you lots of “survey said” and “good answer! good answer!” this holiday season.

oh and for #10 I would love to be able to do separate questions for answers from both men and women, so ask the men in your life and you can label it 10 b. and no jealousy allowed. i already know that Mike’s answer would be Kate Beckinsale and I’m ok with it:)

    WebAssign is an on-line homework system used in Math 112, 113, 115, 115B, 140, 140, 140H, 141, 141H, 220 and 221.

Please read through the directions below before logging into WebAssign.

    Logging into the WebAssign system:

      • There are two methods of payment: credit card, or at the bookstore. You will see more information about this when you log on to webassign. The cost is $19.95 per semester per course as of Fall 2012.

    Selecting an Assignment:

      • Once you have successfully logged in, you will see an assignment list with information such as how many tries you have to complete each problem and when the assignment is due.
      • Select the assignment you want to work on.

Question Types – Within WebAssign there are different types of questions that can be asked, including Multiple Choice, Numerical, and Symbolic. Each type of question should be handled slightly differently.

        • Appearance: The question will be followed by a list of possible solutions. Next to each will be a square containing a circle called a radio button.
        • Use: Radio buttons only allow you to select one answer. If you try to select more than one, only the last answer you select will be counted.
        • Example: Problem 1 of the Assignment WA1.
        • Appearance: Like Multiple choice questions, Multiple Select Questions will be followed by a list of possible answers. However, next to each possible answer will be a square checkbox.
        • Use: A checkbox allows you to choose more than one answer. To get the problem correct you must check all of the correct answers. If you check an answer and then decide this answer is not correct, simply click on the box again and the check will disappear.
        • Example: Problem 2 of the Assignment WA1.

    Numerical, Symbolic, and Fill-in-the blank

        • Appearance: Numerical, Symbolic, and Fill-in-the-Blank questions will all appear the same on the screen. Somewhere within or at the end of the problem, you will see a rectangular box.
        • Use: Clicking in the box will allow you to enter your answer.

How do I know the difference? If the question asks for an answer which is a word, then this is a fill in the blank question. If the question says that you may use specific variables or constants within your answer, then it is a symbolic question. Otherwise, it is a Numerical question.

    Things to keep in mind:

      • Fill-in-the-Blanks are not case sensitive but be very careful to enter the answer with the correct spelling.
      • Symbolic questions are case sensitive. If the question states that you may use the variable “t” if you use “T,” then your answer will graded as wrong.
      • Numerical questions accept only numbers. You may not use any type of variable or function within your answer.
      • After answering all the questions, submit your assignment. Be aware of the maximum number of times you can submit the assignment (this may vary with the assignment).
      • Some of the symbols within the problems might look unusually large or small compared to the text
      • The equations seem to be wrapping around and becoming jumbled and unreadable.
      • The symbols within your assignments have been formatted to match a reasonable text size. If your computer web browser is not set to this size you may have trouble reading the problems. To change this setting, you must change the text size in your browser preferences. Here is how you would do this in Internet Explorer or Firefox:
          • Open the View menu at the top of the browser window.
          • Select Text Size from this mune
          • Set the text size to Largest
          • Open the Edit menu at the top of the browser window and go to Preferences (in some versions of Firefox) or the Options menu in the upper left (in more recent versions).
          • Select the Content tab and then go to Fonts and Colors .
          • Set the Font Size to 18 (both variable and fixed width).
      • Most of the problems within your assignments were created using some sort of formatting table. If your browser window is too small, this can cause the equations to line up improperly. To fix this, you should maximize your window by clicking on the maximize button in the top right hand corner of the window.

    Free IQ Tests

    GMA Practice Items

There are several different types of IQ or general mental ability tests. In general they are trying to measure how quickly and accurately you can solve problems, to give an indication of raw intellect.

The most complex IQ test is a series of tests that can take several hours to complete and can have up to 16 subtests within it.

There are diagrammatic IQ tests which test your ability to spatially recognise patterns and rotate objects and there are more general problem solving IQ tests.

    General Mental Ability IQ Tests

There are general mental ability (GMA) IQ tests that measure your ability to quickly solve a variety of different problems from verbal, to numeric to diagrammatic.

    Sample and practice IQ items:

    1. If Bob sold 15 apples in a working week, what is the average number of apples he sells each day?
    2. “Pig is to pork” as “Cow is to _____”:
      • Lamb
      • Beef
      • Stew
      • Cattle
    3. If it takes 2 hours to drive to City A and the city is 120km away, what speed was the vehicle travelling at?
    4. If Sally sells more tickets than Betty and Betty sells more tickets than Jodie, who sells the most if we compare Sally and Jodie?
    5. The words “inclusive” and “exclusive” have:
      • The same meaning
      • Different meanings
      • Are the opposite in meaning
    6. If you have a cube which is 5m x 5m x 5m, what is the cubic metres this container would hold?
    7. The acronym RSVP originally came from the French term Répondez s’il vous plaît – True or False?
    8. “Boat is to water” therefore “Plane is to _____”
      • Fly
      • Sky
      • Float
      • Air
    9. The following series of numbers contains one number that does not fit the pattern set by the others. What number does not fit? 3, 5, 7, 11, 14, 17
    10. The word PARTICULAR is the opposite of:
      • Distinct
      • Vague
      • Exacting
      • Fussy

Answers to the above IQ Ability Test:

    1. 3 – there are 5 days in a working week, so you divide 15 by 5 = 3
    2. Beef – Pig is the animal pork meat comes from so what meat comes from Cows – Beef
    3. 60km per hour – Take the number of kms 120 and divide by the number of hours, then you get the kilometres per hour
    4. Sally – Given Betty sells more than Jodie, and Sally sells more the Betty, therefore Sally must sell more than Jodie
    5. These words have opposite meanings
    6. 125 cubic metres – to work this out you multiple each dimension of the cube by the others. 5×5 = 25; 25*5=125
    7. True
    8. Air – Boats travel through the water and water goes through a boat’s engine, therefore what do planes travel through and what goes through the engine? The Air.
    9. 14 does not fit, the others are prime numbers, but 14 is not.
    10. Vague. Particular generally means to be quite specific and exact about what you want, therefore being vague would be the opposite.

Langsung aja to the point ya, rahasianya begini:

    synonym

Some differences between synonyms and antonyms

The English language (and, we may presume, many other languages) has both antonyms and synonyms . There are many more words with synonyms than there are words with antonyms. since many things exist which do not have an opposite (the word sandwich. for instance, may be said to have synonyms in the words hoagie . grinder . submarine . and many other words, but there is no opposite of sandwich ). Antonym is also a much more recent addition to English than synonym is; it first appeared in the 1860s, whereas synonym has been used for more than 500 years. Additionally, both nouns have adjectival forms: synonymous and antonymous. Synonymous. which is often used loosely (“She has become synonymous with good taste”), is the more common of the two.

    Origin and Etymology of synonym

Middle English sinonyme, from Latin synonymum, from Greek synōnymon, from neuter of synōnymos synonymous, from syn- + onyma name — more at name

    First Known Use: 15th century

12 of the Best Places on the Internet to Get Free Help with Computer Problems

Where do you go when you need help with a computer problem? One place to find answers is in one of the numerous technical forums on the Internet. These forums are community sites whose members help one another with technical problems. Some of these are major sites moderated by a group of experienced and knowledgeable experts and are excellent sources of free computer help. Here is a selection from the forums that I find most useful. Some are more specialized than others but all are useful places to know about. They are my personal choices and not official recommendations from Gizmo’s Freeware. They are listed in no particular order.

    1. Tom’s Hardware Forum – As the name indicates, this forum is hardware-oriented but there are plenty of posts on other subjects, including the Windows operating system and video games.
    2. Bleeping Computer Forum – Good forum covering many areas of using a PC.
    3. MajorGeeks Support Forums – You may know MajorGeeks as a major freeware download site but it also has an active forum covering a variety of topics.
    4. AnandTech Forums – AnandTech is known for hardware reviews and this forum has a lot of hardware threads but there is plenty of discussion of software and other subjects.
    5. Windows 7 Help Forums – A lot of information about Windows 7 but there are other threads as well.
    6. Windows 8 Forums – This one is about using Windows 8 and 8.1.
    7. Windows Secrets Lounge – Forum of the well-known newsletter. The newsletter is commercial but the forum can be read by anybody and registration is free. Discussion on many subjects here.
    8. TechSpot Forums – General computer topics of all sorts.
    9. CNET Forums – A wide variety of discussion from a major tech publisher
    10. Tech Support Guy Forums – Forum from our top-rated free online technical support service
    11. Wilders Security Forums – One of the best-known sites for security information.
    12. Neowin Forums – Forums on many technical subjects.

In order to submit a question to a forum, you generally have to become a member. However, previous posts are usually available to the general public and you can often find that your problem has already been the subject of a discussion thread that answers your question. One thing to keep in mind when using any forum is that all members do not have equal expertise. However, it is usually pretty easy to pick out who the most knowledgeable members are. Generally, these are the moderators and the senior members with the most posts. Before using any suggestions from a forum, always back up first.

And there you have it – great places to get your computer questions answered. Of course, there are a lot of forums and if you like one not mentioned in this list, please share it with us. And don’t forget our own forum .

I have used many of these sites over the years – both receiving and giving help. One of the truths that all of these sites have in common, is that there are a hardcore group of people, usually with the highest number of “Thanks” or “Kudos”; find these people and seek out their advice. It’ll save you a lot of time and frustration.

Make Use Of is a great site with lots of articles on. everything, but heavy on the computer help. You have to search for the Linux stuff, but there’s plenty of it.

All the sites listed above are for Windows, so are mostly useless for me.

I first go to the forum maintained by the Linux distro I’m using, or its derivative (e.g. Mint, Ubuntu). If I have a problem, a thousand others have had it too and a hundred have figured out the answer.

If I can’t, there’s a lot of small Linux forums but I find the best way of finding the topic is searching for it, making sure I use “linux” as one of the search terms.

    Submitted by v.laurie on 2. January 2015 – 20:06

A number of the sites given in the article’s list have threads for Linux and Macs. Just as one example, Tom’s Hardware has a forum, “Linux/Free BSD”, with over 33 thousand posts.

3 Examples Of Answered Prayers In The Bible

When I first started thinking about the subject for this article, I wondered how I could keep my examples of answered prayer to only three. The entire Bible is one long story of the prayers of God’s people and how He answered them – and is still answering them today. So after much thought, I picked three instances – one from the Old Testament, two from the New Testament – of specific times when someone prayed and their prayers were answered.

First of all, let’s define “prayer.” According to Merriam-Webster, prayer is “an address (as a petition) to God in word or thought.” To pray is to talk to God, whether giving Him praise, thanksgiving, or expressing your needs or desires. So here are three examples from the Bible of people who praised God, thanked God, or asked Him for something, and saw their prayers answered.

1 Kings 17:21-22 (ESV) Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the Lord, O Lord my God, let this child s life come into him again. And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived.

Elijah was an Old Testament prophet of God. He did many wondrous works for God, some of which made him popular among people, other times he was less than popular. But he knew that whether his deeds were popular or not, he must obey God’s commands. But just as Elijah listened to God’s voice, God himself listened to Elijah. Their relationship was one that in the Old Testament was reserved for priests and prophets, but today is available to anyone who accepts Jesus into their life.

In these verses from 1 Kings, Elijah had been staying with a widow woman and her son. He had already blessed the widow and proven himself as a man of God by miraculously causing her food not to run out, so that the widow, her son, and Elijah could all eat during a time of famine and drought. But during his stay, the widow’s son became ill and died. When Elijah prayed for the child’s life to return to him, God answered right away. This is a dramatic, immediate instance of God answering prayer.

Luke 1:47-50 (ESV) and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

This is Mary’s song of praise to God, sometimes referred to as the Magnificat. This is during the time that she is pregnant with Jesus and goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John (who grows up to be John the Baptist). When Elizabeth tells Mary that at the sound of her greeting “ the baby in my womb leaped for joy” (Luke 1:44), Mary then gives a prayer of praise to God.

Praise, worship, and thanksgiving are forms of prayer. But in this prayer, Mary also does make a request of sorts; she says “…from now on all generations will call me blessed.” This is not something that is possible for Mary to accomplish by herself – it’s not within her power alone to be blessed, or to have succeeding generations remember her and call her blessed. God listened to her prayer, and today, two thousand years later, God is still answering her prayer because we still remember Mary’s name and honor her for what she did.

Matthew 26:39 (ESV) And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.’

This is a prayer of Jesus. While he was on the earth, Jesus set the example of how we should talk to God by saying prayers himself. This particular prayer was done in Gethsemane, the night that he was betrayed and arrested. He knew what was going to happen. In this prayer, Jesus pleads with his Father to avoid the torture and death that he knew awaited him.

But Jesus knew that there wasn’t a way to avoid what was coming, no matter how much he dreaded it. And so he ended his prayer with a statement of complete obedience to God: “…not as I will, but as you will.” This is the part of the prayer that God answered, because it was the only part that He could answer.

God will not do things contrary to His nature, contrary to His laws, or contrary to love. In all of these examples, the prayers did not defy God’s nature or His laws. God always wants to answer our prayers to our satisfaction, but if we pray against His will for our lives, then it might appear that our prayers go unanswered. Jesus expressed his desires to God, but because he knew what was at stake, his ultimate desire was to do what God wanted him to do.

God always answers prayers, even if the answer is “no” or “not yet.” The answer to Jesus’ desire to avoid painful death was a “no.” The answer to Elijah’s prayer was an immediate “yes,” and the answer to Mary’s prayer was also a “yes,” but she did not live to see the centuries-long fulfillment of that answer. But regardless of the answer or the timing of the answer, God always listens – He always has, and He always will. These are just three examples in a long wonderful book of stories about answered prayer.

A Quick Tour of Bing the Search Engine

    The Bing Homepage

    The Bing Homepage.

The homepage is clean and uncluttered. Right off the bat, you can narrow your search options with the menu on the left: your options are Images, Videos, Shopping, News, Maps, or Travel. You can also check out the rotating bits of information at the bottom of the homepage; there s also a Popular Now link that will show you what topics are currently getting the most buzz.

    Bing Quick Preview

    Bing Quick Preview.

The Bing Quick Preview is a great way for you to get an idea of what s on a site before you actually click on it. This is definitely a time saver, as many sites in search results don t necessarily offer exactly what you are looking for. Your search term is highlighted in the Quick Preview window, so you can see that yes, indeed, it is in that particular site s information.

    Bing Instant Answers.

Bing s Instant Answers feature quickly grabs all the pertinent information that you need on your query. In this screenshot, you can see a quick flight status search; all you need is the flight number and you re good to go.

Bing Related Searches and Quick Tabs.

Any search you perform on Bing, for instance, U2 (as seen above), will come back with a wide variety of filtering options. For example, in this screenshot, the search was simply for U2 . You can see Bing s Quick Tabs option to the left there; this offers refinements and/or suggestions for your search, i.e. videos. songs, tickets, merchandise, etc.

This search initially started with U2, with a click on the Videos Quick Tab. You ll see screenshot previews of relevant videos, along with a neat video search filter there on the bottom left-hand side that sorts these videos according to length, screen size, resolution, or source.

    Rich Listing Results

    Bing Rich Listing Results.

One of my favorite things about Bing is the Rich Listing Results – another way to present for hey, what I wanted is all in one place! . For example, a search for a restaurant in Seattle doesn t just bring back multiple lists of links; you ll get a one-page resource including addresses, reviews, maps. driving directions. even photos.

Bing really starts to shine in its Travel search. I did a quick search for airfare from Portland, Oregon to Misawa, Japan, and here s what they gave me:

    • Non-stop or a few layovers option
    • Times I want to take off and land
    • A sliding scale for the price range I wanted
    • The option to compare prices in other travel search sites (Expedia, PriceLine, etc.)
    • The ability to track fares via email alerts; if my price goes down, I can grab the lower price.

In addition to flight information, you can also use Bing to search for hotels, cars, cruises, even package deals. In addition, you can frame searches for low fares across departure dates and looks at multiple routes in one map view: a nice way to figure out how you want to take that five-hour flight to Aunt Bessie s house.

    Bing Image Search.

Finding images on Bing is a snap. My search for Cannon Beach images brought back multiple results, as expected, but the search filters found to the left made it easy to find exactly what I was looking for.

For example, I was able to search by size (small, medium, large, and the VERY convenient wallpaper so I can change the look of my desktop), layout, color or black and white, style (photograph or illustration), and people (just faces, head and shoulders, or other).

Another search for tennis brought back more generalized results, with the option (via the Quick Tabs) to narrow down or expand my search; in this case with related searches such as US Open, Wimbledon, and Serena Williams.

    Bing Health Search.

We probably all share the experience of searching for a medical term in a search engine and getting back a ton of results that are either unreliable or unrelated. Bing tackles this problem with a carefully selected cadre of only nine – yes, only nine – trusted and verified medical resources (Mayo Clinic, Medicine.net, About.com, etc.). This makes it a lot easier to find results you can trust on nearly any health-related question you might have.

My search for carpal tunnel symptoms brought back an instant answer from the Mayo Clinic, with the option of related searches and medically approved articles as well – much better than slogging through a ton of links that might not be telling me what I need to know.

Online shopping is a major activity on the Web; in fact, more people today are shopping on the Web than ever before in history. Bing knows this and makes the shopping experience as easy and convenient as possible.

My search for ceiling fans returned results grouped by best match, best user ratings, or price. I had the option of following their related searches and search refinements on the left as well.

The best thing about this shopping search? Cash back, as in literal cash back in your pocket. Shop at the stores that you find here with the cashback option, and you ll make some money. Amazon s short-lived search engine A9.com did this with limited success way back when; I expect Bing to be much more successful.

    Bing – Worth A Look

Bing delivers fresh, relevant, and easy to follow results, and is definitely user-friendly. The search channels (Travel, Shopping, Images, etc.) send you right to the resources you want, the various search refinements (Instant Answers, Rich Results, Quick Tabs) are actually quite useful and don t require a degree in computer science to figure out, and it s easy on the eyes (not too simple, not too cluttered).

The best thing about Bing? You don t have to go all over the Web to get what you re looking for. The search tool attempts to keep your search results all in one convenient place so you can see all the information you need at a glance (something that other search engines need to emulate). Overall, it is surprisingly innovative, filtering out the fluff on the Web so you can get to what you want. I highly recommend it.
