P.A.T.C.H. Assessment Scale v. 3

P retest for A ttitudes T oward C omputers in H ealthcare

June Kaminski 1996 – 2016

I created the first version of the P.A.T.C.H. (Pretest for Attitudes Toward Computers in Healthcare) in 1996 to help my students explore their feelings about learning to use computers both in education and healthcare. Further revisions occurred in 2007, which culminated in the second version. The third version debuted in 2011 to include statements related to social media, ehealth, electronic health records, and mobile technology. It also streamlined the scoring process. This scale focuses on attitudes and feelings about using computers in the practice setting. You may download a pdf copy to print and complete by hand in the Competencies Plan section below.

Or, you can click on the right image to securely complete and score the assessment scale online. You will need to create an account in the course area to access the online scale. If you are from an educational institution, please ensure that the site is approved by your server so you receive your confirmation email when you sign up. Also remember to notice your final score to compare it to the scale interpretations (download at bottom of page this is part of the pdf version of the Scale and the Personal Plan).

Application

Over the years, the P.A.T.C.H. Scale has been used quite consistently by various educators from around the globe (i.e. USA, Canada. Philippines, Jamaica, China, and Turkey) to test their Nursing student’s attitudes towards computers in health care. Nurse administrators and clinicians have used it with various groups of nurses working in hospitals, community health centers, schools, and home health. It has also been used in several graduate students’ thesis and dissertation work and by other nurse researchers. Some published highlights are listed below. If you would like to use the P.A.T.C.H. Scale in your research, writing, or curriculum materials, please contact me for written permission, and cite the Scale appropriately in your work.

Master data management solutions #industry #leaders, #it, #online #only

Q1: Although master data management (MDM) can improve the organization and analysis of data, it is often neglected by pharmaceutical companies. Why is this?
Despite a glut of data, pharmaceutical companies suffer from insufficient customer insight, with inconsistent addresses, specialty or relationship data in various source systems, hindering efforts to align with emerging sales models and gain competitive advantage. Likewise, data on products, such as APIs, the production facility, product packaging or product market information, is held in disparate, often inconsistent source systems. However, nearly all large and mid-sized pharmaceutical companies have by now realized the wide-ranging benefits of MDM and, despite substantial data governance and project management hurdles, have started investing into data harmonization and analysis solutions.

Q2: What can MDM help companies to achieve?
Benefits range from gains in corporate efficiency, growth and agility, in particular achieving improved data accuracy, regulatory compliance, personalization and customer service, scalability, flexibility and data traceability. Additionally, MDM solutions usually provide substantial cost savings by driving the cost of ‘dirty data’ out of the information supply chain.

Q3: Why do you feel pharmaceutical companies should invest in your technology? What advantages does it offer compared with other, commonly used data management systems employed by the pharma industry?
The benefits of an MDM programme cannot be achieved with other solutions. Indeed, most pharmaceutical companies have embarked on an MDM journey already. We offer three levels of MDM architectures: a shared services approach, an MDM Express software factory approach, and the modular MDM-in-a-Box approach with its pre-built functionalities. In all of these approaches, we deploy MDM solutions in a time-frame that is significantly faster and more cost-effective than the industry average.

Q4: Would it help with the stringent regulatory processes in the pharmaceutical industry?
Indeed, pharmaceutical companies have to comply with numerous regulatory processes, such as Health Professionals Council Spend Compliance Monitoring or privacy policies. MDM helps enable regulatory compliance by producing master data, or the ‘gold copy’ of critical corporate product and customer data.

Q5: Cognizant, in conjunction with Siperian, has developed MDM-in-a-Box for life sciences companies. How does this product compare with traditional MDM?
MDM initiatives can be highly effective, but first need to overcome perceptions of complexity and hesitation around cost and time-to-ROI. MDM-in-a-Box for Life Sciences is a Quickstart Solution that can be deployed rapidly, at about half the time and cost of a typical bespoke implementation. It is preconfigured with pre-built solution accelerators, data governance frameworks, user interfaces, data models, connectors etc. and therefore delivers business value quickly, at lower risk, and in an evolutionary, modular approach.

Q6: Have you identified any areas where the product can be improved or expanded?
The life sciences industry grapples with numerous types of data. The existing MDM-in-a-Box modules cover the main ones: customer data, product data, patient data and vendor data. Future modules might cover other types of data entities, such as clinical trials data, employee data and locations data.

Q7: In this day and age, how important do you think it is for companies to deploy the latest information technology systems?
Pharmaceutical companies, while not as badly affected by the economic downturn as other parts of the economy, face revenue challenges from other directions such as intense competition from generic drug manufacturers. To keep a competitive edge, providing industry-leading customer service levels, exemplary regulatory compliance and cost-effective, flexible management of critical corporate data are business imperatives.
