On-demand (OD) computing is an increasingly popular enterprise model in which computing resources are made available to the user as needed.

Lead generation is the use of a computer program, a database, the Internet, or a specialized service to obtain or receive information for the purpose of expanding the scope of a business, increasing sales revenues, looking for a job or for new clients or conducting specialized research. Leads can consist of the names and addresses (or e-mail addresses) of individuals, corporations, institutions or agencies. Lists of leads can be gathered or filtered from targeted databases such as telephone and Internet directories.

On the Internet, Web sites and search engines can be excellent sources of leads, although the process can be time consuming. Web sites, such as TechTarget.com, have evolved for the specific purpose of making it easy for personnel to obtain leads. Companies have emerged that specialize in lead generation for a fee. They perform the research, and then provide the client with a list of leads. Services of this kind have been used by insurance companies, real estate agents, wholesalers, marketing firms, private investigators, research scientists and educational institutions.

Several vendors offer computer programs designed to assist businesses in lead generation. Ethics are an important consideration in the choice and implementation of such programs. The use of spyware, Trojans or other intrusive means of gathering information without the knowledge or consent of targeted individuals or entities is frowned upon. Mass unsolicited e-mail advertising (or spam) is also considered unethical by many, and it can result in electronic blacklisting.

About LEAD

Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) is a new innovative pilot program that was developed with the community to address low-level drug and prostitution crimes in the Belltown neighborhood in Seattle and the Skyway area of unincorporated King County. LEAD will divert low-level drug and prostitution offenders into community-based treatment and support services including housing, healthcare, job training, treatment and mental health support — instead of processing them through traditional criminal justice system avenues.

A unique coalition of law enforcement agencies, public officials, and community groups collaborated to create this pilot program. These groups make up LEAD s Policy Coordinating Group. which governs the program.

LEAD s goal is to improve public safety and public order, and to reduce the criminal behavior of people who participate in the program. The program will be thoroughly evaluated to determine whether it has been successful or not.

LEAD is a pre-booking diversion program that allows officers to redirect low-level offenders engaged in drugs or prostitution activity to community-based services instead of jail and prosecution. LEAD participants begin working immediately with case managers to access services. LEAD s goals are to reduce the harm a drug offender causes him or herself, as well as the harm that the individual is causing the surrounding community. This public safety program has the potential to reduce recidivism rates for low-level offenders and preserve expensive criminal justice system resources for more serious or violent offenders.

How does LEAD differ from other drug programs?

First, LEAD is the result of a commitment from law enforcement agencies, public officials, and community organizations to work together in implementing a new approach to addressing drug and prostitution activity. Second, the diversion in LEAD is made at the pre-booking stage, in the hopes of bypassing the costs and time entailed in booking, charging, and requiring court appearances of an individual. Finally, LEAD provides participants with immediate case management services, and access to additional resources not available through existing public programs.

Who is eligible for diversion into LEAD?

Individuals who are arrested for eligible offenses within specified boundaries for Belltown or Skyway may be diverted into LEAD. Eligible offenses include low-level drug offenses, and engaging in prostitution. Individuals who have certain violent offenses in their criminal history are ineligible for diversion.

LEAD is the result of an unusual collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Collaborators include the King County Prosecuting Attorney s Office, the Seattle City Attorney s Office, the Seattle Police Department, the King County Sheriff s Office, the King County Executive, the Mayor s Office, The Washington State Department of Corrections, The Defender Association, the ACLU of Washington, and community members. The collaboration of these stakeholders was motivated by a shared dissatisfaction with the outcomes and costs of traditional drug law enforcement.

As noted, LEAD is the result of a collaboration among a number of stakeholders. All stakeholders are represented on LEAD s Policy Coordinating Group. and the group makes decisions by consensus via a memorandum of understanding. LEAD is entirely voluntary, and any stakeholder may choose to withdraw from LEAD at any time.

Who will provide services to LEAD participants?

LEAD stakeholders have contracted with Evergreen Treatment Services (ETS) to provide services to LEAD participants. ETS has provided addiction treatment services in Washington for over 30 years, and has been actively involved in federally-funded research projects. ETS REACH Program has been a key provider in the delivery of street outreach services to chronically homeless and chemically addicted adults in Seattle for 15 years. ETS will follow harm reduction principles and will attempt to provide immediate access to services.

How will we know if LEAD works?

All LEAD stakeholders are committed to evaluating the program rigorously. The evaluation will consider, among other factors, whether LEAD has resulted in reductions in drug use and recidivism, whether LEAD is more cost-effective than traditional criminal justice processing, and whether LEAD has had a positive impact on a community s quality of life.

How much will LEAD cost the City of Seattle and King County?

Nothing. LEAD stakeholders obtained funding from private foundations to implement the program. Its funders include the Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Vital Projects Fund, RiverStyx Foundation, Massena Foundation, and the Social Justice Fund Northwest.

Do community members support LEAD?

Community members strongly support LEAD. LEAD will be piloted first in Belltown, and then in Skyway (in partnership with the King County Sheriff s Office). Members of both communities have participated in the program s design, and will continue to provide feedback about the program. For example, the LEAD Community Advisory Board in Belltown includes representatives from the Belltown Community Council, Belltown Business Association, Downtown Seattle Association/Metropolitan Improvement District, Recovery Caf , YWCA, Plymouth Housing Group, and Millionair Club Charity. The LEAD Community Advisory Board in Skyway includes representatives from Skyway United Methodist Church, Westhill Community Council, and Skyway Solutions.

For how long will LEAD be implemented?

LEAD formally began on October 1, 2011. The program is anticipated to run for two years before an evaluation is begun, and to continue with foundation funding for an additional two years while the evaluation is conducted and analyzed. If LEAD is found to be effective, an ongoing source of funding will be sought.

Have programs like LEAD been implemented elsewhere?

LEAD was inspired by arrest-referral programs in the United Kingdom. Those programs have recently been implemented in virtually every police department in the United Kingdom because pilot projects proved to be so effective.

You ve printed flyers, you ve sent out mailers, you have blasted your social-media followers, but you re still not getting the lead flow you need to grow your company into the next billion-dollar brand. Well, there are hundreds of ways to generate leads, so don t hang your head.

Here are ten of my favorite.

1.eBooks

These work great for B2B companies or a business that works in a very technical space, as people love to read and gain expertise about their industry. Make sure you don t promote your services or products. People don t want to be sold, they want to be informed. So write it from a neutral perspective and give actionable insights. Share the eBook socially and ask your network to share it for you.

You ll want to ensure that you have a landing page set up that requires visitors to input their name, email and phone number for a chance to download the eBook. Pages like this can be built easily with tools like Unbounce.

2. Newsletter

Do you have a newsletter yet? If not, you re missing out on one of the simplest way to generate more leads. Make sure you put a newsletter sign up in every possible place that makes sense on your website.

With these newsletter, not only do you have a captive audience (people have to opt-in to your newsletter) but email pathways are a great way to avoid getting lost in all the Internet noise. Again, don t make it all about you. Instead, share with your contacts your insights, recent wins you created for your customers and industry news.

Having a blog is one of the best lead generating tools you can use, as it not only allows a company (or person) complete control of what is said but also an opportunity to have the undivided attention of the reader. And I feel like a broken record, but don t make the blog all about you! Give real value.

Twitter is a dream for generating leads. Use it to reach out to influencers in your industry and get into conversations with them. Their followers, who are probably some of your potential customers, will see your interactions and follow you or visit your site. You can also follow trending subjects that pertain to your business and interject your thoughts into the general discussion by using the # symbol. For instance, if you are in the mobile world, you may use #iphone to find and eventually get leads.

5. Networking events

While a lot of action happens in the digital world, the real world still provides a lot of advantages — especially networking events. Even events that didn t directly pertain to my business have provided me with some of the most valuable contacts and leads. You ll meet more people, expand your network and gain referrals. Plus, it s a great way to build your brand. Make sure to bring business cards and don t be afraid to ask the people you meet for their patronage.

6. Develop an engaging video

Please don t produce another terrible commercial and post it on YouTube. The world doesn t need any more of these. What people always want more of is entertainment. So, spend some time on developing a great idea that promotes your business and engages your customers. Once you ve uploaded the video, you can get the ball rolling on making it go viral by using services like StumbleUpon to drive traffic to your video for pennies per viewer. Video sites like YouTube allow you to put links directly into the video. Use these to link back to specific landing pages on your website.

7. Infographic

Yes, infographics may have been overused a few years back, but people still share them and still stop and read them whenever they can.They re quite cheap to produce as well. Simply come up with an original idea (again, don t make it about you), find a quality (but affordable) graphic designer, then share it socially and ask your network to pass it along. You can also submit your infographics to publications that cover your industry.

    2011 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD – Instrumented Test – Car and Driver

    2011 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD

    If you want to gauge how successful a minivan is, talk to the occupants of the second-row seats. If they say they would be happy to schlep across the country in the vehicle, you know the van’s maker got the recipe just about right. That was the case with my 12-year-old twins as they lounged in the reclining captain’s chairs in the Sienna XLE, viewing their favorite media on a large, 16.4-inch-wide screen.

    The previous Toyota Sienna wasn’t a bad vehicle, but it wasn’t as good to drive or as well packaged as the Honda Odyssey. This latest van rides on the same 119.3-inch wheelbase as the outgoing Sienna but is 0.8 inch shorter and 0.8 inch wider (coming in at 200.2 inches and 78.2 inches, respectively). It is the same height overall, though, at 68.9 inches. We would describe the redesign as distinctive, but the front end is pretty brutal.

    Underpinning the new sheetmetal is the same torsion-beam-rear and strut-front suspension as before, and Toyota has added a four-cylinder option to the powertrain lineup. This 2.7-liter, inline four-cylinder engine is good for 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque and drives the front wheels via a new six-speed automatic transmission. We suspect the trade-off for better gas mileage is slothlike acceleration. Our XLE example was powered by Toyota’s familiar 3.5-liter V-6 engine, making the same 265 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque as before. It has the new six-speed automatic in place of the previous vehicle’s five-speed. Models with the V-6 engine can be ordered with the all-wheel-drive system we drove, which carries about a $2000 premium depending on trim level.

    The XLE starts at $35,315 before adding the XLE Premium package, a $6225 option that includes touchscreen DVD navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, rear parking sensors, a 10-speaker JBL stereo with Bluetooth phone connectivity, and keyless entry and pushbutton start. The XLE comes pretty well equipped as standard, with first- and second-row leather seats, heated front seats, power-sliding side doors, a power rear hatch, a power sunroof, and tri-zone climate control. Our test vehicle stickered for $42,211, about what you would expect to pay for an uplevel van these days.

    The Good Kind of Nanny Tech: It Keeps the Kids from Fighting

    The interior is a pleasant environment, although there is evidence of cost cutting in some of the hard plastic pieces. The front seats give a commanding view of the road ahead, the gauges and the center stack are nicely arrayed, and the navigation system is as easy to operate as a light switch. Out back, our seven-seat Sienna was almost as voluminous as the author’s basement. The third-row seat folds and stows easily in a well that Toyota says facilitates loading five golf bags or four large suitcases with the rear seat up.

    The second-row seats recline and have extending footrests. They slide fore-and-aft nearly two feet, although we’d suggest hiring a gorilla to remove them because they’re heavy. With the third row folded flat and the second-row seats removed, Toyota says the floor space measures approximately eight feet by four feet. A go-kart would easily fit, and the space combines with a low load floor to make this minivan more accommodating for cargo than any SUV we can think of. The sliding center console is enormous and extends to the second row.

    The rear-seat entertainment system uses a single 16.4-inch-wide screen that can display two sources, or one if your kids are getting along. It’s certainly nice that if one kid decides his sister’s movie is sappy beyond belief, he can switch on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and blast away to his heart’s content on the other half of the screen. Like most of these systems, wireless headphones isolate unwanted noise from the grown-ups riding in front. In terms of features and interior space, the Sienna checks all the boxes. We’d like center-row seats that fold into the floor like a Chrysler minivan’s, but it’s hard to argue with the comfort afforded by the bulkier but more conventional seats in this Sienna.

    Drives Well Enough for the Minivan Crowd

    The Sienna drives nicely enough, which is all minivan owners ask of their vehicles. The V-6 engine is a sweetheart, as smooth as Velveeta and almost as unassuming. This Sienna wasn’t quite as spry off the mark as the last AWD Sienna we tested, reaching 60 mph from rest in 7.8 seconds compared with 7.4. (The previous all-wheel-drive Sienna we tested had the same power and was 126 pounds lighter.) Top speed is electronically governed at 115 mph.

    Other data gleaned at the test track included a skidpad figure of 0.76 g, up 0.02 on the old model, and 70-to-0-mph braking in 186 feet, a couple feet better than the previous Sienna and a foot shorter than the last Odyssey we tested. According to the EPA, the 2011 all-wheel-drive, V-6–only Sienna gets 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, whereas the 2010 model was rated at 16/21. The Car and Driver leadfoot squad eked out an overall figure of 19 mpg while the vehicle was in our hands, 2 mpg better than we achieved with the previous V-6 AWD Sienna.

    Dynamically, the Sienna is a lot more buttoned down than the floaty old vehicle and most of the rest of Toyota’s current lineup. The electric power steering has decent road feel and accuracy, the brake pedal is progressive, and body roll in corners is well controlled (for a minivan). The compromise is that the ride is quite firm, although it’s never uncomfortable. Toyota offers a more aggressive SE model, but we think a sporty minivan is pretty dumb.

    Overall, this is a top-notch minivan. It drives well and has a versatile and spacious interior with all the equipment needed to keep children occupied on long road trips. It is priced a little higher than the domestic opposition from Chrysler and Dodge, but it is a better product. At the moment, we think it’s better than the Odyssey, but that could change soon: An all-new Odyssey debuts this fall, followed in early 2011 by a new Nissan Quest.
