If you were let go, be honest and explain the situation and own it. Explain what you learned from the experience, because the interviewer knows you’re human, you make mistakes, and just wants to see that you were able to do something about it)

        7. what is your greatest accomplishment? (be specific and talk about a past work accomplishment. Make sure you pick an accomplishment that shows how valuable you will be in the position you are interviewing for)

        8. Describe a difficult work situation and what you did to overcome it. (Again the key is to be specific. Bring up a past work situation that you handled well. Try and pick an example that shows you tackling a problem that could arise at the new company you’re interviewing for. This shows your value)

        9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? (Your answer should show that you are a person with direction and that you have goals. You should show that those goals include you advancing and thriving at the company or organization you’re interviewing with. But don’t over do it. If you are going for an entry-level job, don’t say you plan to be CEO in 5 years. It will seem unrealistic and could take you out of the running. )

        10. Do you have any questions for me? (This is your time to make an impression and show your knowledge and passion for the company or organization you are interviewing for.

        There are several different ways to answer when you re asked during a job interview what your greatest weakness is. You can mention skills that aren t critical for the job, skills you have improved on, or turn a negative into a positive.

        How to Answer What Is Your Greatest Weakness

        Even though the question is about weaknesses, your answer should always be framed around positive aspects of your skills and abilities as an employee.

        Discuss Non-Essential Skills

        One approach to answering this question is to analyze the key skills and strengths required for the position you are interviewing for and then come up with an honest shortcoming which is not essential for success in that job.

        For example, if you are applying for a nursing job, you might share that you are not particularly adept at conducting group presentations. In this case it will be critical to underscore your strength in one-on-one communication with patients, while providing an example of your difficulty with presentations to large groups.

        Mention Skills You Have Improved

        Another option is to discuss skills that you have improved upon during your previous job, so you are showing the interviewer that you can make improvements when necessary. You can sketch for employers your initial level of functioning, discuss the steps you have taken to improve this area, and then reference your current, improved level of skill.

        If you use this strategy be sure not to mention anything that you improved upon that is related to the job for which you are interviewing. You don t want your qualifications for the job to be questioned.

        Turn a Negative Into a Positive

        Another option is to turn a negative into a positive. For example, a sense of urgency to get projects completed or wanting to triple-check every item in a spreadsheet can be turned into a strength i.e. you are a candidate who will make sure that the project is done on time and your work will be close to perfect.

        Note that the term weakness isn t used in the sample answers —​​ you always want to focus on the positive when interviewing.

        • When I m working on a project, I don t want just to meet deadlines. Rather, I prefer to complete the project well ahead of schedule.
        • Being organized wasn t my strongest point, but I implemented a time management system that really helped my organization skills.
        • I like to make sure that my work is perfect, so I tend to perhaps spend a little too much time checking it. However, I ve come to a good balance by setting up a system to ensure everything is done correctly the first time.
        • I used to wait until the last minute to set appointments for the coming week, but I realized that scheduling in advance makes much more sense.
        • Sometimes, I spend more time than necessary on a task, or take on tasks personally that could easily be delegated to someone else. Although I ve never missed a deadline, it is still an effort for me to know when to move on to the next task, and to be confident when assigning others work.
        • I had difficulty with calculus during college, but I persevered with tutoring assistance and extra effort and completed 2 levels with a B minus average.
        • I used to like to work on one project to its completion before starting on another, but I ve learned to work on many projects at the same time, and I think it allows me to be more creative and effective in each one.
        • I ve learned to make my perfectionism work to my advantage. I have become proficient at meeting deadlines, and with my attention to detail, I know my work is accurate.
        • As an undergrad, I used to leave assignments until the last minute, but with the workload of graduate school, I learned to schedule my time very effectively.

        Whether it was a successful meeting with a client, a complex project wrangled into submission, learning a new skill, or anything else, keep this in your mind when framing your answer. If you are applying to be a manager, framing an answer around relationship-building and helping other succeed and meet goals might be a stronger answer than a discussion about learning new things or working with clients.

        Your qualifications include your education from High School on and any special training you may have done in the past. Your experience is any work that you have done that is directly or indirectly related to the job you are applying for.

        Remember that your education took place in the past. Therefore you need to use the past tenses, for example:

        I attended the University of Helsinki from 1987 to 1993.
        I graduated with a degree in agricultural planning.
        Etc.

        If you are currently a student you should use the following present tenses :

        I am currently studying at the University of New York and will graduate with a degree in Economics in the spring.
        I am studying English at the Borough Community College.
        Etc.

        Remember to include any training you may have had when talking about your education. This includes any computer training, correspondence courses, etc. Make sure to mention your English studies. This is very important as English is not your first language and the employer may be concerned about this fact. Assure the employer that you are continuing to improve your English skills by any courses you may be taking, or by saying that you study a certain number of hours a week to improve your skills.

        Experience and Qualifications

        Work experience is by far the most important topic of any job interview (at least in the United States and Britain). Therefore, it is important to explain what experience you have in detail. Generally, employers want to know exactly what you did and how well you accomplished your tasks. This is not the time to be modest. Be confident, and talk freely about your accomplishments in past employment.

        The tenses you should use are the following:

        When talking about current employment be careful to use the present perfect or present perfect continuous. This signals that you are still performing these tasks at your current job, for example:

        Smith and Co. have employed me for the last 3 years as a salesperson.
        I have been creating customer contacts for 6months.
        Etc.

        When talking about past employers use the past tenses to signal that you are no longer working for that company, for example:

        I was employed by Jackson s from 1989 to 1992 as a clerk.
        I worked as a receptionist at the Ritz while I was living in New York.
        Etc.

        Talking about Responsibilities

        Most importantly, you will need to demonstrate your qualifications and skills, which are required for the job you are applying for. The job skills that you have acquired in the past may not have been for the same exact job. Therefore, it is important to show how the capabilities you do have relate to the job you are applying for.

        I remember a wonderful example of adapting skills to fit the job desired. I had a student from Moscow who had worked as the manager of an important theater in Moscow. Unfortunately, he had to start from the beginning in New York and therefore wanted to get a job as a rodent exterminator (someone who kills rats!). When asked what kind of experience he had, he replied that, as the manager of the theater, he had had to make sure that the theater was always rodent free and was therefore capable of doing the job well! This is a fantastic example of the type of adaptability most employers in the United States are looking for.

        Smart Answers to Common Job Interview Questions

        One of the most common questions in an interview is “Tell me about yourself.” Actually, it is not even a question–it is an invitation. It is an opportunity to share with the interviewer whatever you think is important in their hiring decision.

        More importantly, it is your chance to differentiate yourself. In most cases, most of the standard questions allow the same.

        As some of you know from reading my free Job-Hunt interviewing guide — Successful Job Interviewing: What Job Candidates Need to Know — I recommend building a checklist of key experiences and attributes you want to cover and find opportunities to present them during the interview. The “Standard Questions” are often times those moments.

        Answering the Most Common Job Interview Questions So You Stand Out

        Here are some of the most popular questions and my thoughts on how to answer them.

        Where do you see yourself in five years?

        Employers don’t necessarily care to hear that you expect to climb the corporate ladder and be a supervisor. If the job you’re interviewing for is not a supervisor, they probably aren’t concerned about your management skills. You can share how you’ve been a mentor to others and led projects with little to no supervision. That should indicate you have leadership potential.

        Focus on them: In five years, you should have made a significant impact to the company’s bottom line. Think about how you can achieve this in the role you’re interviewing for. In technology careers, advancing your skills is important, too. You should be able to share what areas you want to strengthen in the near term (but be careful that they are not areas of expertise that the company needs now).

        Why should we hire you?

        This is a differentiation question. What you want to tell them is: they’d be crazy not to they hire you.

        Focus on them: You need to not only share how you meet almost all the criteria they seek, but also have two to three additional abilities that they might not even know they need…yet. They need to know you are a candidate who can meet their needs now, but also be valuable for where they want to go. Are they likely to need another skill set as they grow as a company? Or maybe you have skills that you noticed are in another job description they are looking to fill; you can help out with those deliverables until they find someone (or be a backup to the person they hire).

        Have you been down a path already that they are currently starting? Having “lessons learned” to offer them is a very strong plus for a job candidate.

        Why do you want to work here?

        The answer to this question has two aspects: the content and the delivery.

        • Content — Employers want to know you feel you can fit in at the company quickly. That means on deliverables, but also company culture. You’ll likely have to do some homework to answer this one. You need to understand the reasons why others enjoy working there. Is it a great place to advance your skills, have great challenges to add to your resume, or will it allow you to grow as a professional?
        • Delivery — The delivery must be genuine. If a hiring manager feels you’re just “telling them want they want to hear,” but don’t mean it…well, the interview is over in their mind. They want to know this is not just a job and paycheck. They want to hear this is what you want to do and the best place to do it.

        What do you know about us?

        This is actually a test. If you know very little, it is an indication that you are not very serious about working there.

        Focus on them: Candidates who are really excited about the prospect of working there have done their homework. If you really want to stand out, learn more than what is listed on their web site. Do some heavy research—perhaps find some articles on the company that not many would know about. It may even come up in conversation spontaneously, and you can show them a copy of the article (I have had this happen to me).

        How do people describe you?

        Here’s another opportunity to differentiate yourself. Everyone claims to be: a hard worker, good communicator, and team player. But how many are a: problem-solver, game-changer, leader in the industry? Be creative, and have stories to back it up. The interviewer will want to know why someone thinks you are one of these things.

        Focus on them: You want to present attributes that make you sound like the go-to guy or gal wherever you work. Even the standard answers can be taken a step further to be more valuable:

        • Yes, they want hard workers, but most likely that’s commonplace at their office. Maybe you work hard, but also help others work fewer hours (by helping them do their job better or making their jobs easier).
        • Good communicators are everywhere. But this doesn’t mean just speaking well. It includes listening. Do you hear things that others don’t? Do you understand things quickly? Can you figure out what people are trying to tell you through other clues (body language, for example)?
        • Being a good team player is expected, too. But what does this really mean? Getting along with everyone? That’s not hard to do if you’re a nice person. Pulling your weight in the office? Again, expected. What have you done, beyond your job description, that saved the team from a disaster or helped them make an impossible deadline? Have you won an award for this?

        What is your greatest strength/ greatest weakness?

        Your greatest strength is something they need.

        Focus on them: You have many strengths, but pick the one they need help with the most. Is it your expertise in a particular skill? Is it your ability to turn low-performing teams into high performers? Share something that makes them think they need to hire you…right now.

        I hate the “greatest weakness” question. Everyone knows it’s a trap, and everyone knows the candidate is going to say something trite (popular example: I’m a perfectionist ). When you give a real answer, you are being genuine. You are admitting you have some growth opportunities and are not perfect. But you can include that you already have a plan to overcome this weakness through training or practice.

        Some people even insert a little humor in their answer—“I wish I was better at tennis.” You can, too, if you feel like the interviewer has a sense of humor. But, be sure to quickly follow with a serious answer. Showing you have a lighter side is usually a good thing.

        When can you start?

        Be careful about this question for a few reasons. First of all, it doesn’t mean you “got the job.” They may be just checking to add that to their notes. You must keep your guard up until you are in your car and driving away from the interview.

        If you are currently employed, you should be honest about the start date and show professionalism. You should tell them you would have to discuss a transition with your current company and see if they require a two-week notice. If you currently have a critical role, your potential new employer would expect a transition period.

        If you can start right away (and they know you are not currently employed), you certainly can say you’re able to start tomorrow. Sense of urgency and excitement about starting work at the new company is always a good thing.

        Bottom line:

        Even the “boring, standard questions” can have unique and useful answers. You should think hard about how you can differentiate yourself from others every step of the way during the interview.

        How to Respond

        Your response doesn t need to be focused on work, but it should demonstrate your ability to devote yourself to a particular task or hobby about which you are passionate.

        Whatever your response, provide some examples of how you have dedicated yourself to that interest or activity. You can also mention goals (such as training for a race, if running is your passion), which gives interviewers a sense of your long-term thinking and perseverance.

        The interviewer may ask follow-up questions about your passion, so make sure it s something you feel comfortable discussing. If film is your passion, for instance, interviewers may ask for movie recommendations, or inquire about your favorite movie.

        No matter what you answer is, be sure that what you share isn t something that could potentially cut into your working hours. For example, you don t want to say that you re a mountain climber with the goal of climbing Mountain Everest soon or that you re getting ready for the Tour de France or looking to spend the winters skiing in Aspen.

        • One of my greatest passions is helping others. When I was younger, I enjoyed helping my mom with household repairs. As I grew older, that habit grew and I desired to help others as well. I like helping people find solutions that meet their specific needs.
        • I m passionate about painting. I take an evening art class once a week and try to find time each weekend to paint. Painting is a good way for me to relax after a busy week.
        • I lost my father to pancreatic cancer and ever since then, I have spent time volunteering to help raise awareness and funding for cancer research. It s a way to break the ice and make you feel more comfortable during the interview process. It s also a way for the hiring manager to get insight into your personality to help determine if you re a good fit for the job .

          Sharing too much or too little information isn t a good idea. The interviewer doesn t want to know everything about you, but disclosing too little can make him or her wonder why you aren t more open.

          How to Answer the Tell Me About Yourself Interview Question

          Although it might be tempting to share a list of your most compelling qualifications for the job at hand, a more low-key approach will probably help you to develop a personal rapport with your interviewer.

          Try starting out by sharing some personal interests which don t relate directly to your work. Examples might include a hobby which you are passionate about like quilting, astronomy, chess, choral singing, golf, skiing, tennis, or antiquing.

          Interests like long distance running or yoga which help to represent your healthy, energetic side are worth mentioning. Pursuits like being an avid reader or solving crossword puzzles or brain teasers will help to showcase your intellectual leaning. Interests like golf, tennis, and gourmet food might have some value if you would be entertaining clients in your new job.

          Volunteer work will demonstrate the seriousness of your character and commitment to the welfare of your community.

          Interactive roles like PTA volunteer, museum tour guide, fundraiser, or chair of a social club will help show your comfort with engaging others.

          Transition to Professional from Personal

          After sharing a few interesting personal aspects of your background, you can transition to sharing some key professional skills that would help you to add value if you were hired for your target job.

          Consider using phrases like In addition to those interests and passions, my professional life is a huge part of who I am, so I d like to talk a bit about some of the strengths which I would bring to this job.

          Share Your Expertise

          Be ready to share three or four of the personal qualities, skills and/or areas of expertise which would help you to excel in the job for which you are interviewing. Ultimately, you will want to share several other strengths before the interview is over.

          Make a list of your strengths before you go into the interview, so you know what you will share. Look at the job description and match it with your skills. Then share the top few skills which make you an ideal candidate for the job.

          However, be careful not to overwhelm the interviewer with too much information. After mentioning three or four strengths, you might mention that you have several other assets which you would like to discuss as the interview unfolds.

          At first, you should only mention the asset and allude only briefly to some proof of how you have tapped it to your advantage.

          For example, you might say that you love to give presentations and that has helped you to generate lots of leads at sales dinners for prospective clients.

          Later in the interview, you will want to be more specific and detailed in discussing situations, interventions and results flowing from your strengths.

          Avoid Politics and Controversy

          Happy New Year From RMS

          I missed the opportunity to greet everyone a Merry Christmas, so I will start by wishing everyone have a Happy New Year. Every year around this time, I have the feeling to take a look back at how Ragnarok Online has come along. As I have probably said it before, what started out as a pastime once upon a time during a Christmas holiday had turned into a major part of my life for the last 10+ years.

          Over the last year, I’ve seen many players feeling nostalgic and came back to RO looking for their happy memory. This is all thanks to the years of work from many talented people put into emulator projects. While keeping good record of the game’s development, servers are able to go back in time and create their own golden age of RO. It is a really nice concept that servers these days can choose to start at one episode and live back in the time that they think is the best. I appreciate every servers created by people who have a heart for RO and the effort they put into (re)building the shared memory we have.

          As for 2016, I await for more quality server to come and keep the community strong. Once again, thanks for supporting RMS over the years. Also thanks for all the players and developers that have contributed to Ragnarok Online.
