Our focus this week is applying word problems to what we ve learned about decimal multiplication. Our Decimal Multiplication Test is Friday! Your study guides will be due Friday as well.

Our test is Monday. Please use your study guide to review the skills we ve covered during this unit. You should have examples, directions, and sample problems to practice with!

What will we be doing this week? On Monday we will take our end of unit test on Decimals! On Tuesday, anyone that needs to complete the test, or do corrections may. On Wednesday, we will begin our new unit on decimal multiplication and division. We ll begin with estimation and modeling. Here is the new study guide we ll use Wednesday:

We will be completing Unit 2 in one week. Our test is scheduled for October 30. I hate to have a test on a Monday, but that Tuesday is Halloween, and I know that children are usually so excited that day that it makes focus more of a challenge! We ll be working on rounding, and this study guide all week!

Morning Work – On Monday, you will receive your study guide, and you will need to work on it each day. In light of that, I will not assign morning work this week. BUT, you will be required to complete it, and you will receive a grade on the study guide. PLEASE use the folded paper strategy on the notebook paper you use for computation!

What will we be doing this week? Rounding.

Homework- IXL G8-G14 (Our goal is 90%) We will hold off, and do G7 G19 next week!)

In Advanced/Accelerated Math.

Morning Work Due to testing, we will take one week off from Morning Work. In the morning, you should be studying your study guide!

What will we be doing during class this week? On Monday, we will complete the second part of the expressions exam! It is a challenging exam, so please study your notes! Tuesday and Wednesday, we will begin studying Rates with an introduction to vocabulary. This is a FUN unit! You are going to LOVE it. Study materials will be checked off on Monday. I will give a grade for completion.

Week of October 16.

Fall Festival was AWESOME. We had an excellent turn-out this year, and wonderful weather! Thank you to all the parents that volunteered to work at this event! You did a great job! It was so much fun.

My favorite part of Fall Festival is always seeing former students, and hearing about their adventures in Middle School! It makes me smile to think that next year you might return as well!

Morning Work- The Friday eblast provided some background information about Morning Work, and how it helps us prepare for the Milestone exam. If you didn t receive it, please let me know! Morning Work is a spiral review of the many skills we learn in 5th grade, as well as the concepts we need to maintain from earlier years.

Remember to fold 2 sheets of paper into 4 squares in order to record your answers! If you have any questions about how this should be set up, please come by and see an example. We want to practice transferring problems from the screen to paper, so please do not turn in a printed copy of the morning work!

What will we be doing this week? We will continue our study of Decimals this week. We will be review the ordering we studied last week, and reinforce what we learned by using number lines. We will also begin adding and subtracting decimals. Here are some resources that should be helpful:

Our Philosophical Foundation

Our guiding principle for this work is that the teacher orchestrates the learning in the classroom, not a text or group of standards. We feel that our role is to provide teachers, students and parents with materials that are varied enough so that they can learn from them, adapt them, and use them in a way that makes them comfortable with the authority they have. The controversy over explicit instruction vs. inquiry is, in our view, a distraction from the goal of interconnecting subject matter content and pedagogy.

Our hope is that teachers will organize the classroom around learning in the way that is most suitable to them and their students. Our role is to provide materials that are adaptable by the teacher whatever the pedagogical approach.

We believe success hinges on student engagement in the classroom as well as the influence of outside agents, primarily parents. Thus, the parent resource materials are aimed at engaging parents in the education of students.

Central to active student engagement are a solid and flexible understanding of the subject being taught and the intentions of the course material by those teaching students.В We encourage teachers to start each chapter by talking with their colleagues about the mathematic in the chapter; what are the essential ideas you want students to walk away with? What are the foundational concepts on which you will be building understanding?В What are the pitfalls or misconceptions involved? How does the path laid out in the text fit with what you believe your students need? Lastly, how will you know your students met the goals you set for them?

Our mathematical goals are the CCSS Content Standards listed at the beginning of each chapter. Also listed at the beginning of each chapter is how the Practice Standards uniquely unfold for the given chapter. Throughout the workbook, you will find notes on the mathematical foundations on which our activities are based and, based on our collective experiences working with students, pitfalls and misconceptions we foresee. On the teacher page, you will find the word versions of all our student workbooks. That way you may edit materials to best fit your students needs.

Please know, there is more material in each lesson than you likely need.

Original Funding, Pilot and Writing Team (7th and 8th Grade Materials)

The original 7th and 8th grade textbook materials were created in response to the Math Materials Access Improvement solicitation issued by the Utah State Board of Education in June of 2012. For those materials, Hugo Rossi was the Principal Investigator with Maggie Cummings and David Wiley serving as Co-Principal Investigators. Those materials were a collaborative work with contributors from University of Utah, Utah State University, Snow College, and Weber State College; Jordan, Granite, Davis and Salt Lake City School districts; and many teachers throughout Utah.
