    My Lasek Experience #lasek #experience

    #

    My Lasek Experience

I have to say that deciding what type of treatment to have once you have built up the bottle to do it at all, is extremely difficult. The information on epi-Lasik, with or without wavefront, intralase, epi-Lasik again with our without wavefront is a bit overwhelming and as the documentation you are given is after all a sales document, you tend to have to do a lot of research online to get a more balanced view.

I had epi-Lasek recommended to me on the grounds that I sometimes throw myself down mountains on pieces of wood. Also with contacts I have tendency to have some dry eye and Lasek apparently reduces the instances of that too. Apparently a large high speed collision could have a chance of forcing the flap created in the cutting procedure for the epi-Lasik open. Some comments on the web even say a collision in your car which triggers the air bags could in fact cause similar damage to the eye.

A family friend has recently had epi-Lasik with the use of the Intralase laser that cuts the flap rather than the automated scalpel. He has given a big thumbs up to the procedure. Although the treatment itself was uncomfortable. It healed very quickly. Very little pain and he has a huge improvement in vision almost immediately. In addition however, he has been given the impression by his provider that the treatment results in eyes as structurally sound as Lasek which involves no cutting. In fact they have given the impression that the US Air force, Navy and even NASA recommend their pilots use this treatment.

However, various notes out there suggest otherwise. Laser eye surgeons are stating that once the eye is cut that the structure is changed for ever. And that unlike bone it doesn t heal stronger where the cut or break occurs (See http://www.parkavenuelaser.com/about-lasek-surgery.php ). I have even seen references that the flap has been eased open during operations up to 10 years after the original surgery.

I was most surprised when I read in many forums that the US Air force and Navy only allow their combat pilots to use Lasek, as it preserves the original strength of the eye. Although this is reserved for existing pilots and not new recruits. This fly s in the face (pardon the pun) at the blurb of the other provider.

It does appear that NASA is indeed recruiting its latest astronauts who have had Intralase Lasik as per loads of references on a number of sites out there. However, it appears that they are also recruiting candidates who have had PRK, Lasek and standard Lasik eye surgery too (http://www.top10lasik.com/astronauts-allowed-to-have-lasik.htm ). As long as the person has experienced 12 months being problem free since surgery. So claims that only Intralase Lasik is being considered seems inaccurate.

So after a slight flirt with the idea of chucking in the Lasek for Lasik with Intralase. I have decided that I don t really want a door in the front of my eye to open at 3000m up a mountain, no matter how remote and that I will stick with the original recommendation. Anything which reduces the risk of such damage to what are my most precious organs (Well in the top half of my body anyway) has got to be worth a bit of pain for a few days.

PLEASE NOTE – I am NOT an expert in the field of laser eye surgery in anyway. I am your normal Joe Blogs on the street who is simply noting the process of what they are going through. My knowledge comes from research on the web and from talking to different service providers. And of course first hand from going through the procedure. In addition, as I have a friend who has only a week ago had epi-Lasek +Interlase, I am in a good position to compare the two which may prove useful in your decision making process. Talk to as many people as you can about this before making any decisions.

I m currently three days away from what I’m hoping will be a life changing experience. The mood however has changed from one of excitement to a more nervous sick feeling. To be more accurate I seem to be fluctuating between excitement and feeling slightly vomitous.

Now before you tell me that nervousness is simply another form of excitement, I need to tell you that it is mainly due to the fact that I have been selected for epi-Lasek surgery rather than the more common epi-Lasik surgery. The documentation provided for this type of surgery warns that in certain cases epi-Lasek may actually result in and I quote “Severe Pain for the first 12 – 24 hours or more”.

Now I have to say its the or more get out clause which is causing most concern. It is far too similar to the from 395 per eye clause in the sales literature. After my meeting with my treatment provider I realised the from bit is most definitely the key word in the pricing, therefore I am very concerned as the time draws near at the use of “or more” when describing pain.

So how did I reach this point? I have been wearing contact lenses for around 10 years now. And glasses for a further 10 years before that. Although my prescription in comparison to many isn t too bad at only -1.5 (L) and -2.5 (R) with slight Astigmatisms in both. It is bad enough that I am either wearing my glasses or contacts full time. Generally only staggering around my house first thing in the morning without either.

I can t really remember the beginning of my journey to getting Laser eye surgery. I have been carrying out a little bit of research every few years and occasional discussions with my Optician. With the later over the last couple of years I have begun to notice a thawing in his perceptions of it. In particular the last couple of occasions I have brought up the subject he had been very positive. So this time I took the bull by the horns and decided to contact my provider for the initial check-up.

Even before the check-up I have to say my provider were excellent. Very polite, helpful and gave the impression of being completely transparent and not trying to push you into anything you don t want to do. To a contact lens wearer like my self the degree of tests were similar but a little more involved than your average check-up and included an eye mapping test. After another eye test which last a half hour. I was told I was best to go for epi-Lasek.

It didn t mean a great deal to me at the time as at that time I kept getting Lasek and Lasik mixed up for obvious reasons. However, after spending more time reading the documentation and the internet I have realised the differences, and so here I am stressed at the thought of what s to come.

AIU’s Open Access Initiative: Open Courses / Free Courses

Sharing knowledge is a vital component in the growth and advancement of our society in a sustainable and responsible way. In order to contribute, Atlantic International University is implementing an Open Access Initiative with academic work, select courses, scientific research, projects, and other scholarly work by students, faculty, and other contributors seeking increased access to Higher Education by making learning materials and research Publicly Accessible. The primary goal of this page is to present AIU’s open courses to the world. All courses on this page are free and open to the public without any requirements for registration or payment. These online courses are intended to be easily taken independently, without supervision or guidance at a pace defined by the user. Each open course includes all necessary video conferences, lectures, course materials, and even tests. Tests are offered as a tool for the user at the end of each lesson to verify that learning, retention and comprehension of the material presented have occurred. However, the tests are optional and the full online course content and lessons are available at once to users.

Through Open Access, AIU and other leading institutions through out the world are tearing down the barriers to access and use research literature and academic materials. Our organization is interested in the dissemination of advances in scientific research fundamental to the proper operation of a modern society, in terms of community awareness, empowerment, health and wellness, sustainable development, economic advancement, and optimal functioning of health, education and other vital services. AIU’s Mission and Vision is consistent with the vision expressed in the Budapest Open Access Initiative and Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. Some selected Student Publications are also available for this purpose: Student Publications.
