What s the funniest thing that happened to you on a set?

Not the funniest, but I had the most fun playing Backgammon with Glenn Close. She’s very competitive.

I have noticed that in your career you have not made films from the time of the kings. Would you like to?

Yes. I recently did a period piece in the 1920’ where I played Bugs Moran. Head of the Chicago Mobs Irish territory. Had so much fun playing that period. I’d like to do more period pieces. Scorpion King was the closest I got to playing that “ln time of kings”, different time then Middle Ages but I still got to wear some chaimail shirts, carry a sword, and ride a horse. I’d like to do more of that. It’s so fun traveling back to different time periods.

What is the first thing you notice in someone?

Their eyes. It’s the window to the soul

How many Ethan’s naughty magic chocolates do you think you ate during the filming of the movie?

Any plans on writing any more YA novels or sequels to After The Red Rain?

Not at this time. I’m focusing my writing on some screenplays and TV shows I’ve been working on.

I speak some. I can understand more then I speak. When I go back to Italy I pick it up fairly quickly. But I’d like study it more and be more affluent.

What s your favorite song at the moment ?

The Weight by The Band. Been learning to play it in my guitar so it’s stuck in my head all the time.

If you could meet any person dead or alive, who would it be?

If you could be anyone for one day who and why?

Hmmm. I kinda like being me.

What s one place you haven t traveled to but would like to someday?

A few. India. Bali. And Africa.

What To Do When You’ve Made Someone Angry

I was running late. My wife Eleanor and I had agreed to meet at the How to do peter answersrestaurant at seven o clock and it was already half past. I had a good excuse in the form of a client meeting that ran over and I wasted no time getting to the dinner as fast as possible.

When I arrived at the restaurant, I apologized and told her I didn t mean to be late.

She answered: You never mean to be late. Uh oh, she was mad.

Sorry, I retorted, but it was unavoidable. I told her about the client meeting. Not only did my explanations not soothe her, they seemed to make things worse. That started to make me angry.

That dinner didn t turn out to be our best.

Several weeks later, when I was describing the situation to a friend of mine, Ken Hardy, a professor of family therapy, he smiled.

You made a classic mistake, he told me.

Me? I made the mistake? I was only half joking.

Yes. And you just made it again, he said. You re stuck in your perspective: You didn t mean to be late. But that s not the point. The point is that you were late. The point and what s important in your communication is how your lateness impacted Eleanor.

In other words, I was focused on my intention while Eleanor was focused on the consequences. We were having two different conversations. In the end, we both felt unacknowledged, misunderstood, and angry.

The more I thought about what Ken said, the more I recognized that this battle intention vs. consequences was the root cause of so much interpersonal discord.

As it turns out, it s not the thought that counts or even the action that counts. That s because the other person doesn t experience your thought or your action. They experience the consequences of your action.

Here s another example: You send an email to a colleague telling him you think he could have spoken up more in a meeting.

He replies to the email, Maybe if you spoke less, I would have had an opportunity to say something!

That obviously rankles you. Still, you send off another email trying to clarify the first email: I didn t mean to offend you, I was trying to help. And then maybe you add some dismay at the aggressiveness of his response.

But that doesn t make things better. He quotes the language of your first email back to you. Don t you see how it reads? He asks. BUT THAT S NOT WHAT I MEANT! You write back, IN CAPS.

So how do you get out of this downward spiral?

It s stunningly simple, actually. When you ve done something that upsets someone no matter who s right always start the conversation by acknowledging how your actions impacted the other person. Save the discussion about your intentions for later. Much later. Maybe never. Because, in the end, your intentions don t matter much.

What if you don t think the other person is right or justified in feeling the way they do? It doesn t matter. Because you re not striving for agreement. You re going for understanding.

What should I have said to Eleanor?

I see you re angry. You ve been sitting here for 30 minutes and that s got to be frustrating. And it s not the first time. Also, I can see how it seems like I think being with a client gives me permission to be late. I m sorry you had to sit here waiting for so long.

All of that is true. Your job is to acknowledge their reality which is critical to maintaining the relationship. As Ken described it to me: If someone s reality, as they see it, is negated, what motivation do they have to stay in the relationship?

In the email back and forth I described earlier, instead of clarifying what you meant, consider writing something like: I could see how my criticizing your performance especially via email feels obnoxious to you. How it sounds critical and maybe dismissive of your efforts in the meeting.

I said this was simple but I didn t say it was easy.

The hardest part is our emotional resistance. We re so focused on our own challenges that it s often hard to acknowledge the challenges of others. Especially if we are their challenge and they are ours. Especially when they lash out at us in anger. Especially when we feel misunderstood. In that moment, when we empathize with them and their criticism of our behavior, it almost feels like we re betraying ourselves.

But we re not. We re just empathizing.

Here s a trick to make it easier. While they re getting angry at you, imagine, instead, that they re angry at someone else. Then react as you would in that situation. Probably you d listen and let them know you see how angry they are.

And if you never get to explain your intentions? What I have found in practice and this surprised me is that once I ve expressed my understanding of the consequences, my need to justify my intentions dissipates.

That s because the reason I m explaining my intentions in the first place is to repair the relationship. But I ve already accomplished that by empathizing with their experience. At that point, we re both usually ready to move on.

And if you do still feel the need? You ll still have the opportunity, once the other person feels seen, heard, and understood.

If we succeed in doing all this well, we ll often find that, along with our relationships, something else gets better: our behavior.

After that last conversation with Eleanor after really understanding the consequences of my lateness on her somehow, someway, I ve managed to be on time a lot more frequently.

1 Peter 3: 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord,

how to do peter answers

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it.

but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to articulate a defense to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But respond with gentleness and respect,

But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord, always ready for a defense to everyone asking you an account concerning the hope in you; yet with gentleness and fear,

but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

but honor the Messiah as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

Instead, exalt the Messiah” as Lord in your lives. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you to explain the hope you have.

But set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess.

But sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with humility and fear:

But hallow THE LORD JEHOVAH The Messiah in your hearts, and be ready to return a defense to everyone who requests a statement from you about the hope of your faith, in meekness and in reverence,

But dedicate your lives to Christ as Lord. Always be ready to defend your confidence [in God] when anyone asks you to explain it. However, make your defense with gentleness and respect.

but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to respond to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and reverence,

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear:

But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always to satisfy every one that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you.

but sanctify [the] Lord the Christ in your hearts, and [be] always prepared to [give] an answer [to] every one that asks you to give an account of the hope that [is] in you, but with meekness and fear;

but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear:

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.

but in your hearts consecrate Christ as Lord, being always ready to make your defence to any one who asks from you a reason for the hope which you cherish.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear:

and the Lord God sanctify in your hearts. And be ready always for defence to every one who is asking of you an account concerning the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear their intimidation; do not be shaken. 15 But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to articulate a defense to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But respond with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who slander you will be put to shame by your good behavior in Christ.

The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.

To make you know the certainty of the words of truth That you may correctly answer him who sent you?

But the LORD of hosts will be exalted in judgment, And the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness.

“You are not to say, ‘It is a conspiracy!’ In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy, And you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it.

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

He must gently reprove those who oppose him, in the hope that God may grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy, He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work impartially, live your lives in reverent fear during your temporary stay on earth.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

with. See on ver.

fear. or, reverence.

And be. –The better reading omits the connecting particle, so that we should put “being” instead of “and be.”

Ready always to give an answer. –This is the consequence of sanctifying Christ within by the worship of a pure life, that no moment, no questioner finds us unprepared to speak with freedom of our hope in Him. The word for “answer” here is apologia, an apology; not, of course, in the modern sense of an excuse, but a defence, the reply of an accused person, like the well-known Apologia Socratis, or the great modern Apologia pro Vita Sua, or the works from which Tertullian, Athenagoras, St. Justin, and others are called “The Apologists.” It does not mean that every person is bound to be able to state intellectually the nature and grounds of the Christian creed, though such a duty may, perhaps, be fairly deduced from the text. It does not say that every Christian ought to know why he is a Christian, but that every Christians own life ought to be so free from taint, so conscious of Christ enshrined within, as to cause him no misgiving in defending the faith from the calumnies (see 1Peter 2:12) brought against it. The constant readiness, or freedom from encumbrance of sin, is the main point, “which intimates,” says Leighton, “it was not always to be done to every one, but we, being ready to do, are to consider when, and to whom, and how far.” Consciousness of impurity of life shuts a man’s mouth from defending Christian morality.

That asketh you a reason. –Rather, that demandeth of you an account. It does not mean inquirers about Christian doctrine, but those who call Christians to account for their profession of the Gospel hopes. Though it must not be exclusively so taken, St. Peter evidently means chiefly the being called into the law court to give account. Probably he is thinking of our Lord’s charge to himself and his co-apostles, in St. Luke 12:11. (Comp. Matthew 10:5; Matthew 10:16; Matthew 10:19.)

Of the hope that is in you. –More literally, with regard to the hope that is in you: i.e., with regard to the Christianity in which you share. It is, of course, quite a modern application to the text to see in this anything of the individual assurance of salvation. However fairly it may be argued that a Christian ought to know why he, personally, expects to be saved, it is not the thought of St. Peter here. Christianity is here called a hope, rather than a faith, as in Acts 28:20, Colossians 1:23, because, especially in times of persecution, so much of our creed has a future tinge.

With meekness and fear. –There ought certainly to be added a warning But before these words. The readiness of the Christian’s defence of himself and the Church from all moral aspersions is not to be marred by any self-exaltation or improper confidence. Archbishop Leighton says, “Not, therefore, blustering and flying out into invectives because he hath the better on it against any man that questions him touching this hope, as some think themselves certainly authorised to use rough speech because they plead for truth. On the contrary, so much the rather study meekness, for the glory and advantage of the truth.” The “fear” will be, in large measure, a dread of overstepping the bounds of truth or modesty in speaking of the Christian morals. The Acts of the Martyrs, with all their splendour, too often show how St. Peter’s cautious But was needed.

Shocking! You Won t Believe What I Learned About Peter Answers

How to do peter answers

Tonight, I ve discovered something terrible. Or maybe it s wonderful. Depends on how you look at it, I guess . . .

from the diary of Peter Galliger, December 3rd, 2006

Peter Answers: More than just a clever prank

Hi. My name is Chris Wondra.

I thought I had peteranswers.com all figured out. Start by typing a period in the petition box, blah, blah, blah all that.

I was wrong. Very wrong.

And so is everyone else out there offering up their smarty-pants instructions.

Strange messages from users of Peteranswers.com

I thought I was so smart posting my cute little story and instructions about how the prank actually works. You can see them here if you like. Or you can find them on someone else s blog. Practically everybody knows how to pull the prank now. And if you don t, it s not hard to find the secret.

Except nobody knows the real secret. Sure the prank is cute, but Peter Answers has another side that few people see. A very dark side.

Sure the prank is cute, but Peter Answers has another side that few people see. A very dark side.

Something is wrong.

Too many people are getting strange answers from Peter when they are ALONE!

And these people keep sending me emails or telling me about it by commenting on my blog. At first I ignored them. I thought they just didn t know how to follow directions. But the stories keep coming.

After awhile, I couldn t ignore them.

Something is going on.

Time after time Peter knows things he shouldn t. Again and again he tells people facts about their pasts. In some cases Peter even tells the future AND IT COMES TRUE!

If you ve read my previous post on the subject, you can understand why I might be skeptical. The problem is that time and again, these people report using the website ALONE!

The problem was that time and again, these people reported using the website ALONE!

And then one night, six months ago, I pulled all the messages and emails together and printed them out.

All 500 of them!

Until I actually sat down and counted them, I had no idea there were so many!

So I began to wonder: Is it possible that all these people are lying? I had over 500 messages in front of me all of them claiming to have had an unexplained interaction with a spirit while they were ALONE on the internet.

Were all these people lying?

Why would so many people lie to me (a complete stranger) about something like that?

I wanted Answers

Then, even more surprisingly (after I had them printed, counted and organized), I was shocked to discover a disturbing pattern. At first I didn t believe it. I couldn t see the pattern on my computer, but once I had them printed, it was obvious.

Since then I haven t slept much. The moment I printed out the messages and discovered the pattern, I was hooked obsessed with Peter and his haunting answers.

So I ve spent the last 6 months researching his story.

I ve interviewed hundreds of people. Dug up dozens of photographs. Surfed through thousands of digital and electronic message boards, blogs, spoken with dozens of paranormal experts.

And what have I found?

Without knowing the whole story, you ll never believe me but I ll tell you anyway. I call it e-haunting. I ve found absolute proof that spirits can haunt us using electronic devices. Computers, phones, cell phones, fax machines, the internet, ipods. . . you name it.

Before he died, Peter had it all figured out. And now he s doing it!

Sometimes people say truth is stranger than fiction. Now I know why. Peter s story is the strangest tale you will ever read. But the truly freaky thing about it is that it s COMPLETELY TRUE!

Why Peter s story must remain hidden

So are you wondering why, in this day and age, when you can find everything on the internet, you haven t heard this before? Don t you think it s strange that everyone is posting instructions to the prank, but nobody seems to know who Peter is or why he built his website?

I ll tell you why.

Because every time someone gets close to the truth on-line, their computer crashes. . .or worse. So you will never I repeat NEVER find this story on any webpage, news story, or blog including mine.

Every time someone gets close to the truth, their computer crashes. . .or worse.

Believe me I tried. And I ll never do it again.

The reason? Believe it or not, Peter s story has to be kept off the internet. Sort of.

Let me try to explain.

Before his death in 2007, Peter made some incredible discoveries about the nature of, and relationship between, the supernatural world and electronics. These discoveries must not be posted on-line.

Peter reaches out. . .from the grave

Let me tell you what I can.

    Emily was Peter s girlfriend.
    Peter is dead.
Since his death he has been trying to contact her.
    Then she disappeared.

Emily didn t know it at the time, but the picture below is an example of one of those attempts.

How to do peter answers

The story behind the picture is just a snippet of the entire strange but true tale of Peter Galliger and the website he built before he died.

The story behind the picture is just a snippet of the entire strange but true tale of Peter Galliger and the website he built before he died.

One night, Emily was at a sleepover celebrating her 15th birthday. It had been hard for her friends to convince Emily to come. Peter had been dead only two weeks. Emily and Peter had been close, and she was still struggling with the grief and confusion that always follows the loss of a close friend.

Eventually though, Emily s friends convinced her. It was around 11:00 at night and as they were getting ready for bed (and goofing around with the camera they had given Emily as a gift) Jessica, one of Emily s friends, snapped the picture above. Emily and her friend Haley had just finished brushing their teeth in the bathroom.

See the deformed hand reaching for Emily s throat?

The accident that took his life also crushed one of Peter s hands.

Jessica swears the hand was not there when she took the picture. So you can imagine their surprise when they started looking through the pictures the next morning.

As it turns out, however, that picture wasn t the first time Peter had tried to contact Emily. Since then (and before she disappeared), she told of hundreds of different occasions Peter has tried to reach out from the dead.

It s a sad story. I just can t tell here. I wish I could. I know that doesn t make much sense to you now. But I ll post more when I can.

Understanding Mathematics, how to do peter answers.#How #to #do #peter #answers

Understanding Mathematics

How to do peter answers How to do peter answers

People wrote differently in those days, obviously the vulgar mechanick may be a man and he that is able to reason nimbly and judiciously may be a woman, (and either or both may be children).

for complicated mathematics building on simpler mathematics.

The following examples illustrate the difference between the two approaches to understanding mathematics described above.

You won’t be able to learn how to understand mathematics from abstract principles and a few examples. Instead you need to study the substance of mathematics. I’m hoping that the answers to the following

will illustrate how mathematics is meant to make sense and is built on a logical procession rather than a bunch of arbitrarily conceived rules.

One of the main things that turned me on to mathematics were certain concepts and arguments that I found particularly beautiful and intriguing. I’m listing some of these below even though they may not be frequently asked about. But I’ll hope you’ll enjoy them, and perhaps get more interested in mathematics for its own sake.

Solving Mathematical Problems

The most important thing to realize when solving difficult mathematical problems is that one never solves such a problem on the first attempt. Rather one needs to build a sequence of problems that lead up to the problem of interest, and solve each of them. At each step experience is gained that’s necessary or useful for the solution of the next problem. Other only loosely related problems may have to be solved, to generate experience and insight.

Students (and scholars too) often neglect to check their answers. I suspect a major reason is that traditional and widely used teaching methods require the solution of many similar problems, each of which becomes a chore to be gotten over with rather than an exciting learning opportunity. In my opinion, each problem should be different and add a new insight and experience. However, it is amazing just how easy it is to make mistakes. So it is imperative that all answers be checked for plausibility. Just how to do that depends of course on the problem.

There is a famous book: G. Polya, How to Solve It , 2nd ed., Princeton University Press, 1957, ISBN 0-691-08097-6. It was first published in 1945. This is a serious attempt by a master at transferring problem solving techniques. Click here to see an html version of Polya’s summary.

The main thing that keeps mathematics alive and interesting of course are unsolved problems. Many open problems that are important in the contemporary view are hard just to understand. But here are

for which you can form your own conjectures. The word simple in this context means that the problem is easy to state and the question is easy to understand. It does not mean that the problem is easy to solve. In fact all of these open problems are difficult. (That’s why they are unsolved, it’s not that nobody tried!)

Acquiring Mathematical Understanding

Since this is directed to undergraduate students a more specific question is how does one acquire mathematical understanding by taking classes? But that does not mean that classes are the only way to learn something. In fact, they often are a bad way! You learn by doing. For example, it’s questionable that we should have programming classes at all, most people learn programming much more quickly and enjoyably by picking a programming problem they are interested in and care about, and solving it. In particular, when you are no longer a student you will have acquired the skills necessary to learn anything you like by reading and communicating with peers and experts. That’s a much more exciting way to learn than taking classes!

Here are some suggestions regarding class work:

Ask Peter what the name of my dog is!

(whispered) Ask it who is in love with Nicki.

No, I was pretty sure this was not what I assigned. Sometimes a little distraction is a good thing. It helps to break up the day a bit. Keep things fresh. But this was like a virus. A nasty one. And it was spreading rapidly.

Peteranswers.com: The Peter Answers Computer Prank

The Peter Answers (or peteranswers.com) Computer Prank is a magical virus, pure and simple. It s spread from host to host through word of mouth and has an incubation period limited only to a carrier s access to a computer with internet connection.

It all starts with an initial carrier some individual who knows the secret trick to this hypnotic prank. It works like magic, and if you knows it, you most definitely have the power hypnotic power, psychic power. Once you know the magic, all you need to do is simply hop on a computer, zip to the Internet and go to peteranswers.com.

Once at the site, all you have to do to memorize your audience, is draw attention to the idea that there s an entity within the Internet that can answer all of your questions. Kind of like a Ouiga board but with dead on accuracy. What happens next, is what reminds me of a David Blaine trick. Because it s pure magic.

In the first box, the keyboardist types in the petition:

In the second box the typist enters whatever question they d like usually from the growing crowd.

Upon hitting the return button, Peter, from his comfortable couch at peteranswers.com, instantly answers the question. Correctly.

Peter Answers My Question: How does peteranswers.com work? Subtle Mind Control.

How to do peter answers

Like I said, I d already lost over half the room. Even if I d ordered all computers shut down, they d still be thinking about how to do the magic trick for the rest of the day. I m not kidding. Peteranswers.com had a firm hold of these kid s minds, and it wasn t letting go any time soon. So I figured I might as well do a little research.

With Google s help, it didn t take me long to figure it out. And once I did, I knew peteranswers.com had met it s match. As with any infectious illusion, the best way to vaccinate is to simply reveal the magic trick.

There s really nothing like a quick injection of the truth. Sure, the David Blaine impostors will be furious at having their trick exposed. But any short term disruption they may cause is nothing compared to the long term, manic-obsessive behavior that are symptoms of the Peter Answers Computer Prank virus itself.

Peteranswers.com: The Magic Tricks Revealed

First, instead of typing in the petition box, Peter, please answer the . . . begin by instead typing:

That s right. Simply type a period. What happens next is pure magical genius.

Instead of seeing what you d expect (a . ) you see a P . Then type whatever the heck you want and the rest of the phrase Peter, please answer the following appears.

As long as nobody pays any attention to where your fingers are actually landing the prank works slick.

The trick to the prank is to here type in the answer to whatever question you are going to ask next. When you re done just keep typing until the phrase is complete. Whenever you hit the : your cursor will jump to the next box where you ll type in the actual question.

Hit return and bingo! Whatever you really typed into the petition box appears.

peteranswers.com and peter answers for advanced users

Once you get the hang of how peteranswers.com works, it won t be long before you run into a little snag. The problem is, sometimes your answer is much shorter (has fewer characters to type) than the 41 keystrokes it takes to type peter please answer the following question :

There are actually three ways to solve this problem:

  1. Type another . When you do this, the program opens back up and shows exactly what you are typing again. For example, if your answer was Lisa. That s only 4 keystrokes, which would take you to Pete in the petition. Just type another . after the last letter of your answer. Now you ll have Peter and from now on you can continue typing the rest of the petition, please answer the following question:
  2. Another option is to fake it until you get to Peter, please answer. You don t have to keep punching keys until the entire long petition is filled out. Just remember to type the : when you re done.
  3. The final way to make this work is to simply play dumb. Pretend you lost control of your fingers and type a : when you re done. As soon as you type the : you ll skip to the next box. Just say oops or something and keep going.

So there, my dear friends. The truth has set you free. Once the mystery of peteranswers.com is solved, the novelty wears off pretty quickly doesn t it?

And if you re a school teacher, it s really fun to watch two things:

1) The air escaping from the Peter Answers carriers as they lose their power, and

How to answer the question ‘Do you have any questions?’

Surprisingly, the most common answer to the interview question, Do you have any questions? is no. Not only is this the wrong answer, but it s also a missed opportunity to find out information about the company. It is important for you to ask questions not just any questions, but those relating to the job, the company and the industry.

Consider this: Two candidates are interviewing for an inside sales position.

Henry asks, I was wondering about benefits, and when they would become effective. Also, what is the yearly vacation allowance? And, does the company match the 401k plan?

Assuming this is the first interview, it is premature to ask about benefits. What s in it for me? questions can be interpreted as self-centered and a sign of your lack of interest in the job.

The next candidate, Chris, says, No, I think you just about covered everything I wanted to know. I m sure I ll have more questions if I get the job.

This is a very passive response that doesn t demonstrate interest or imagination. Once you get the job if you get it may be too late to ask questions.

It is important to ask questions to learn about the company and the job s challenges. In some cases, the interviewer will be listening for the types of questions you ask. The best questions will come as a result of listening to the questions the interviewer asks you.

A good response to the interviewer asking, Do you have any questions? would be: Yes, I do. From what you ve been asking during the interview, it sounds like you have a problem with customer retention. Can you tell me a little more about the current situation and what the first challenges would be for the new person?

This answer shows interest in what the problem is and how you could be the possible solution. It is also an opportunity to get a sense of what will be expected.

Be prepared

What information do you need to decide whether to work at this company? Make a list of at least 10 questions to take with you to the interview. Depending on who is interviewing you, your questions should vary.

  • If you are interviewing with the hiring manager, ask questions about the job, the desired qualities and the challenges.
  • If you are interviewing with the human resources manager, ask about the company and the department.
  • If you are interviewing with management, ask about the industry and future projections. This is your chance to demonstrate your industry knowledge.

Timing is important

You will have to use your judgment about the number of questions you ask and when to ask them. Think of this as a conversation. There will be an appropriate time to ask certain types of questions, like those about benefits and vacation. To be on the safe side, concentrate on questions about the job s responsibilities and how you fit the position until you get the actual offer.

When you begin to think of the interview as a two-way process, you will see it is important for you to find out as much as possible about the company. Questions will give you the opportunity to find out if this is a good place for you to work before you say yes.

How Much Do You Expect to Get Paid – Interview Question

Updated August 03, 2016

When you are applying for a job a typical job interview question is How much do you expect to get paid? Depending on your answer, you can price yourself out of a job offer or you can get a job offer that is lower than you might have expected. This is one of the very trickiest questions to answer since it s so easy to give a self-defeating response.

The key to answering this question well is to prepare in advance by researching salaries at the company, and in similar positions in the same industry.

Sample Answers

  • I understand that positions similar to this one pay in the range of $X to $Z in our region. With my experience, I would like to receive something in the range of $Y to $Z.
  • I would like to be compensated fairly for my experience.
  • The research I ve done indicates that positions like this one pay $X to $Z and something in that range would be acceptable to me as a starting salary.
  • My salary requirements are flexible, but I do have significant experience in the field that I believe adds value to my candidacy.

Tips for Answering Salary Questions

Here are some strategies to try when asked how much you expect to get paid:

  • Provide a range: Experts suggest that you give a range, rather than an actual number. If you are offered the low end of your range, use that as an opportunity to request other non-salary benefits as well, such as reimbursement for classes, vacation days, etc.
  • Do your research: Not only should you know the average salary for your industry, but it s also wise to know geographical information as well. A nurse in Alaska and a nurse in New York will not necessarily have the same salary. Salaries can vary widely based on the cost of living in the area, as well as the number of qualified applicants nearby. Use sites like Glassdoor. Payscale. and Salary.com to research salaries.
  • Play it coy: Typically, experts recommend that you avoid saying a number first. You can say something like, I d need to know more about the position and its responsibilities before thinking about salary.
  • Keep your cost-of-living needs in mind: It can feel very game-like to negotiate a strategy, but it s important to keep your financial needs front-and-center. Will the salary you request cover your expenses? If not, how will you make up the difference? Weigh your needs against the research you ve done about salary — if the two numbers aren t a close to each other, it could be a sign that the role isn t a good match.
  • Get information from the interviewer: Use this question as an opportunity to flip the tables on the interviewer, and find out what the salary range is for the position. You can ask: What s the range you have in mind for the position? or What are some non-salaried benefits available?

Survey Questions 101: Do You Make any of These 7 Question Writing Mistakes?

Details, details, details. Creating surveys that yield actionable insights is about details. And writing effective questions is the first step.

We see common mistakes that keep survey questions from being effective all the time.

Here are the 7 most common:

Survey Question Mistake #1: Failing to Avoid Leading Words / Questions

Subtle wording differences can produce great differences in results. “Could,” “should,” and “might” all sound about the same, but may produce a 20% difference in agreement to a question.

In additions, strong words such as “force” and “prohibit” represent control or action and can bias your results.

The government should force you to pay higher taxes.

No one likes to be forced, and no one likes higher taxes. This agreement scale question makes it sound doubly bad to raise taxes.

Wording alternatives can be developed. How about simple statements such as: The government should increase taxes, or the government needs to increase taxes.

How would you rate the career of legendary outfielder Joe Dimaggio?

This question tells you Joe Dimaggio is a legendary outfielder. This type of wording can bias respondents.

How about replacing the word “legendary” with “baseball” as in: How would you rate the career of baseball outfielder Joe Dimaggio?

Survey Question Mistake #2: Failing to Give Mutually Exclusive Choices

Multiple choice response options should be mutually exclusive so that respondents can make clear choices. Don’t create ambiguity for respondents.

Review your survey and identify ways respondents could get stuck with either too many or no correct answers.

What is your age?

What answer would you select if you were 10, 20, or 30? Questions like this will frustrate a respondent and invalidate your results.

What type of vehicle do you own?

This question has the same problem. What if the respondent owns a truck, hybrid, convertible, cross-over, motorcycle, or no vehicle at all?

Survey Question Mistake #3: Not Asking Direct Questions

Questions that are vague and do not communicate your intent can limit the usefulness of your results. Make sure respondents know what you’re asking.

What suggestions do you have for improving Tom’s Tomato Juice?

This question may be intended to obtain suggestions about improving taste, but respondents will offer suggestions about texture, the type of can or bottle, about mixing juices, or even suggestions relating to using tomato juice as a mixer or in recipes.

What do you like to do for fun?

Finding out that respondents like to play Scrabble isn’t what the researcher is looking for, but it may be the response received. It is unclear that the researcher is asking about movies vs. other forms of paid entertainment. A respondent could take this question in many directions.

Survey Question Mistake #4: Forgetting to Add a “Prefer Not to Answer” Option

Sometimes respondents may not want or be able to provide the information requested.

Questions about income, occupation, finances, family life, personal hygiene, and personal, political, or religious beliefs can be too intrusive and be rejected by the respondent.

Privacy is an important issue to most people. Incentives and assurances of confidentiality can make it easier to obtain private information.

While current research does not support that PNA (Prefer Not to Answer) options increase data quality or response rates, many respondents appreciate this non-disclosure option.

Furthermore, different cultural groups may respond differently. One recent study found that while U.S. respondents skip sensitive questions, Asian respondents often discontinue the survey entirely.

What is your race?

What is your age?

Did you vote in the last election?

What are your religious beliefs?

What are your political beliefs?

What is your annual household income?

These questions should be asked only when absolutely necessary. In addition, they should always include an option to not answer. (e.g. “Prefer Not to Answer”).

Survey Question Mistake #5: Failing to Cover All Possible Answer Choices

Do you have all of the options covered? If you are unsure, conduct a pretest using “Other (please specify)” as an option.

If more than 10% of respondents (in a pretest or otherwise) select “other,” you are probably missing an answer. Review the “Other” text your test respondents have provided and add the most frequently mentioned new options to the list.

You indicated that you eat at Joe s fast food once every 3 months. Why don t you eat at Joe s more often?

There isn t a location near my house

I don t like the taste of the food

Never heard of it

This question doesn’t include other options, such as healthiness of the food, price/value or some “other” reason. Over 10% of respondents would probably have a problem answering this question.

Survey Question Mistake #6: Not Using Unbalanced Scales Carefully

Unbalanced scales may be appropriate for some situations and promote bias in others.

For instance, a hospital might use an Excellent Very Good Good Fair scale where “Fair” is the lowest customer satisfaction point because they believe “Fair” is absolutely unacceptable and requires correction.

The key is to correctly interpret the scale. If “Fair” is the lowest point on a scale, then a result slightly better than fair is probably not a good one.

Additionally, scale points should represent equi-distant points on a scale. That is, they should have the same equal conceptual distance from one point to the next.

For example, researchers have shown the points to be nearly equi-distant on the strongly disagree–disagree–neutral–agree–strongly agree scale.

Set your bottom point as the worst possible situation and top point as the best possible, then evenly spread the labels for your scale points in-between.

What is your opinion of Crazy Justin s auto-repair?

This question puts the center of the scale at fantastic, and the lowest possible rating as “Pretty Good.” This question is not capable of collecting true opinions of respondents.

Survey Question Mistake #7: Not Asking Only One Question at a Time

There is often a temptation to ask multiple questions at once. This can cause problems for respondents and influence their responses.

Review each question and make sure it asks only one clear question.

What is the fastest and most economical Internet service for you?

This is really asking two questions. The fastest is often not the most economical.

How likely are you to go out for dinner and a movie this weekend?

Even though “dinner and a movie” is a common term, this is two questions as well. It is best to separate activities into different questions or give respondents these options:

Dinner and Movie

Summary

While not totally inclusive, these seven tips are common offenders in building quality questions.

Focus on creating clear questions and having an understandable, appropriate, and complete set of answer choices. Great questions and great answer choices lead to great research success.
