Carpet Water Damage

This section of the carpetbuyershandbook.com examines flood damaged carpet, water intrusion, flood classification, carpet warranty, sanitary flooding, unsanitary flooding, black water, home owners insurance, carpet cushion (carpet padding), padding, flooding types, and carpeting restoration.

Carpet Water Damage

Water intrusion affecting carpet and other floor coverings is among the most difficult situations faced by a homeowner or building manager. There is no standard procedure for dealing with every flooding situation. Each crisis must be evaluated on a case by case basis. Every flooding situation will have its own distinguishing problems. There are a number of standard questions that must be addressed in evaluating the proper protocol for returning the carpet to its pre-flood status. The primary question that must be addressed is the type of flooding that has occurred, sanitary, unsanitary, or black water.

Sanitary Flooding

The carpet must be treated with a disinfectant following extraction of excess water. Most homeowners insist that the carpet should be replaced in all flooding situations but this is usually not necessary in the case of sanitary flooding. A few simple guidelines may be followed to insure the carpet can be returned to pre-flood conditions.

  1. Traffic on the wet carpet should be kept to a minimum until the carpet is completely dry. The latex that holds the primary and secondary backings together is weakened when wet. Excessive traffic on the carpet may cause delamination. The latex should regain most of its strength after drying.
  2. Action should be taken immediately to shut-off and control the source of the water. It may be necessary to punch small holes in the drywall to release any standing water that has accumulated within the walls. It is impractical to begin restoration efforts prior to identification and elimination of the water source.
  3. Quickly remove any furnishings that may stain or damage the carpet.
  4. Immediately contact a professional restoration technician to perform the work.
  5. Extraction of excess water should begin immediately and the carpet should be completely dry within 12 hours following intervention. Failure to follow these recommendations may allow for the development of several types of bacteria and fungi that may negatively affect human health. To reduce the possibility of this occurrence, the application of a disinfectant to the face fiber is recommended. Many of these treatments will destroy stain resist treatments.
  6. To expedite drying, the carpet should be removed from the tack strip and the carpet padding (carpet cushion) always should be discarded. Carpet should be elevated and fans should be utilized to speed drying time. In circumstances where high humidity may delay drying time, dehumidifiers should be secured to assist in drying out the environment.

Unsanitary Flooding

If the water can be identified as unsanitary, there are few safe options. Anytime the water intrusion is a result of water with some degree of contamination, the water source can be classified as unsanitary. Examples of unsanitary water intrusion include dishwasher overflows, toilet overflows with urine present, punctured water beds, or other water sources that may contain biopollutant contamination. It is recommended the carpet be discarded due to bacterial concerns. If the decision is made to restore the carpet, disinfectants must be used to protect human health. In situations associated with unsanitary water intrusion, the primary concern should be protecting public health. The classification of unsanitary water versus black water contamination is dependent upon time. Unsanitary water that is left untreated for significant periods can change from unsanitary to black.

In dealing with unsanitary water sources, you must always assume there is a significant threat to human health. Rubber gloves, boots, goggles, and other protective clothing should be used. Anyone with cuts or open sores should avoid contact with the flood waters.

Black Water

Black water can be described as any water that contains raw sewage. Sea water and any water that comes in contact with the ground may also be classified as black water. Black water is considered highly unsanitary. This type of flooding can produce serious health effects. When black water is involved in flooding situations the facility must be evacuated to protect public health. All floor covering materials must be discarded and other surfaces should be carefully evaluated. It is recommended that all porous surfaces are removed and discarded. The facility should be evacuated by inhabitants until the environment can be returned to pre-flood conditions. Worker safety precautions similar to those utilized in dealing with unsanitary water should be used for black water.

Carpet Warranty

Regardless of the flooding type, all carpet manufacturers typically void any existing warranty (see carpet warranty) that may have been in effect at the time of the flood. While many insurance companies insist that carpet performance is unaffected by flood damage, this is not always the case. The lamination strength of the synthetic latex is usually weakened by excessive moisture and may affect long term carpet performance.

Guidelines for Response to Clean Water Damage within 24-48 Hours to Prevent Mold Growth*

  • For non-valuable items, discard books and papers.
  • Photocopy valuable/important items, discard originals.
  • Freeze (in frost-free freezer or meat locker) or freeze-dry.

Carpet and backing – dry within 24-48 hours§

  • Remove water with water extraction vacuum.
  • Reduce ambient humidity levels with dehumidifier.
  • Accelerate drying process with fans.

Concrete or cinder block surfaces

  • Remove water with water extraction vacuum.
  • Accelerate drying process with dehumidifiers, fans, and/or heaters.

Hard surface, porous flooring§ (Linoleum, ceramic tile, vinyl)

  • Vacuum or damp wipe with water and mild detergent and allow to dry; scrub if necessary.
  • Check to make sure underflooring is dry; dry underflooring if necessary.

Non-porous, hard surfaces (Plastics, metals)

  • Vacuum or damp wipe with water and mild detergent and allow to dry; scrub if necessary.
  • Remove water with water extraction vacuum.
  • Accelerate drying process with dehumidifiers, fans, and/or heaters.
  • May be difficult to completely dry within 48 hours. If the piece is valuable, you may wish to consult a restoration/water damage professional who specializes in furniture.

Wallboard (Drywall and gypsum board)

  • May be dried in place if there is no obvious swelling and the seams are intact. If not, remove, discard, and replace.
  • Ventilate the wall cavity, if possible.
  • Follow laundering or cleaning instructions recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Remove moisture immediately and use dehumidifiers, gentle heat, and fans for drying. (Use caution when applying heat to hardwood floors.)
  • Treated or finished wood surfaces may be cleaned with mild detergent and clean water and allowed to dry.
  • Wet paneling should be pried away from wall for drying.

* If mold growth has occurred or materials have been wet for more than 48 hours, consult Table 2 guidelines. Even if materials are dried within 48 hours, mold growth may have occurred. Items may be tested by professionals if there is doubt. Note that mold growth will not always occur after 48 hours; this is only a guideline.

These guidelines are for damage caused by clean water. If you know or suspect that the water source is contaminated with sewage, or chemical or biological pollutants, then Personal Protective Equipment and containment are required by OSHA. An experienced professional should be consulted if you and/or your remediators do not have expertise remediating in contaminated water situations. Do not use fans before determining that the water is clean or sanitary.

† If a particular item(s) has high monetary or sentimental value, you may wish to consult a restoration/water damage specialist.

§ The subfloor under the carpet or other flooring material must also be cleaned and dried. See the appropriate section of this table for recommended actions depending on the composition of the subfloor.

Did you know?

Carpet water damage can be one of the frustrating occurrences for any homeowner. In most case, the insurance provider will choose to restore the flood damaged carpet, but the carpet manufacturer will void all carpet warranty following flood damage.

While both Yellowstone National Park and the Black Hills of South Dakota have unforgettable scenery, there’s plenty between the two you won’t want to miss. The fastest way to get to Yellowstone from the Black Hills area is along Interstate 90, a journey of 474 miles and seven and a half driving hours. By adding just 50 miles and three hours to your drive, you can take in a number of scenic byways, monuments and park lands along the way.

Through Black Hills and Palisades

After making memories at Black Hills attractions like Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore and Deadwood, make your exit equally memorable with a scenic drive up Spearfish Canyon. Head south out of Deadwood on U.S. Highway 85 and turn onto the U.S. 14 Scenic Byway to take in the views of Spearfish Canyon. Towering limestone palisades, dramatic waterfalls and vivid autumn foliage are just a few of the sights you’ll see along the 28-mile drive from Deadwood to Spearfish.

Where the Deer and the Antelope Play

Bypass I-90 in Spearfish, and continue up Highway 85, also known as the Canam Highway, for about 10 miles. Turn west on Highway 34 to journey into the wide open grasslands. The road follows a meandering stream punctuated with tree-topped bluffs. You’ll enter Wyoming, slicing through the Beartooth Mountains and the Wyoming part of Black Hills National Forest. The road takes you to Devils Tower National Monument, where the stump-shaped granite monolith rises more than 1,200 feet above the valley below. Continue south onto Highway 14, and set up camp on the shores of Keyhole Reservoir at a state park by the same name. This part of the scenic drive covers just over 100 miles in South Dakota and Wyoming.

Drive Across the Sky

Take I-90 west 113 miles across the grasslands to the city of Buffalo to see the Great Medicine Man Museum and catch the Cloud Peak Skyway Scenic Byway. The road slices through the southern part of Bighorn National Forest and the Bighorn Mountains on its 63-mile journey to Ten Sleep, topping out at more than 9,000 feet. Snow-capped mountains, rolling wildflower meadows and towering palisades make up some of the scenery along the way. Continue on Highway 16 to Cody, 113 miles northwest of Ten Sleep. The route meanders north along the Bighorn River to the tiny town of Greybull before heading west across the plains to Cody.

Scenic Byways to the Northeast Entrance

Head out of Cody on Highway 296, the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway. The road journeys 47 miles through Shoshone National Forest over the Absaroa Mountains. The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway ends at the Beartooth All-American Road, considered by some to be the most scenic roadway in the country. It passes between the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness and the North Absaroka Wilderness. Crazy Creek Falls tumbles down the mountainside in a zigzag flow. A half-mile hike along the trail brings you to a bridge overlooking the cascades. As the road crosses into Montana, you’ll find a mile-long recreation area with trail heads and picnic areas. The scenic drive dips back down into Wyoming, ending at the park’s northeast entrance and intersecting with Yellowstone’s Grand Loop Road.

My laptop computer screen is black

    Updated: 04/26/2017 by Computer Hope

Note: If you are having trouble with a monitor for a desktop computer, please see our page about no display or black screen on a computer monitor .

Follow the steps below to help solve or locate the cause of a black or blank laptop computer screen.

Tip: If you are seeing a white screen or rainbow of colors on the screen, this could mean the video card in the laptop is defective. In this case, the video card needs to be replaced by an authorized repair center for your brand of laptop.

    Computer is not booting

Although you may not be able to see anything on the screen, listen to the laptop and make sure it sounds as if the computer is booting. If it does not seem to be booting properly or it sounds different, follow the steps in the link below before trying any of the other steps on this page.

If the computer boots up and displays a login screen for the operating system, but the screen goes black or blank after you log in, there may be an issue with the operating system itself. A system file may have become corrupted, preventing the operating system from loading and resulting in the black or blank screen.

Try restarting the computer first, to see if it is a temporary issue and resolves itself with a reboot. If the problem persists, you may need to repair or restore the operating system through a recovery console. accessible with the operating system installation disc.

Brightness is set low or power setting

If the picture is partially visible, often it is only the laptop’s brightness that is set low, or a power setting is decreasing the brightness. Make sure your laptop is not in a power saving setting by plugging the laptop into the wall. Next, try increasing the brightness on your laptop to verify it is not the brightness causing your issue.

    Try external display

Verify there is not an issue with the laptop graphics card by connecting a monitor or other display to the laptop. If the external display works fine, it is an issue with your laptop display.

If an external monitor is also not working with the laptop and you have read through the above link, the internal graphics card or cable is defective and not the display. You may need to have the graphics card or motherboard replaced. Take the laptop to a computer repair shop to see if it can be repaired.

    Laptop Overheating

You can also check to see if the laptop is overheating. While typically a laptop shuts off when it overheats, it may only shut off the display, due to the graphics chip shutting off.

An issue with overheating may be due to dust or dirt build-up on the fan, heat sink or vents. You can try using canned air to blow the dust and dirt out and make it easier for the laptop to expel any heat that is generated.

Is there an on and off button for a laptop monitor?

No. The laptop screen should turn on with the computer. If the computer is experiencing problems or cannot boot the screen may not turn on.

    Another hardware issue

If after following the above steps the laptop still has a black or blank screen, your laptop has a hardware issue. Below are the most common hardware failures.

If your laptop is under warranty, it is recommended you contact the laptop manufacturer for directions on how to get the laptop repaired.

If the laptop is not under warranty, unfortunately for most end-users, repairing a bad LCD on a laptop can be complicated or may result in further damage if not done properly. It is recommended that you take the laptop to a repair shop and have them fix the laptop. However, if you want to try to replace the LCD yourself, below is a listing of companies that can send replacement screens for almost any laptop.

    Only We Can Understand

ROUTINE SPEEDING STOP GOES OUT OF CONTROL

In the early morning hours of December 6, 2009, my whole life changed. I was the Municipal Court Judge for the City of Wentzville, member of a family of extremely well-known REALTORS, and a hard working criminal-defense attorney. I had never faced real criminal charges of any sort, and was/am a law-abiding citizen who took pride in contributing to my community.

So, imagine my surprise when, while driving home from a late night at the office, an officer pulled me over for speeding, but didn’t stop there. At first I thought it was a routine speeding ticket and was prepared just to wait for the paperwork — I own Traffic Law Counselors® and am familiar with the process. However, the trooper started asking me questions about what I’d had to drink that evening; to which I replied, “nothing.”

OFFICER SAYS GET OUT OF THE CAR

Still, the officer asked me to get out of the car and did not like it when I asked, “why?” — later he admitted at trial that he didn’t like someone questioning his authority. By the way, I never (not once) mentioned I was an attorney or judge. Regardless, I pretty much knew at that moment that the officer had decided to arrest me for DWI. After many, many past depositions, officer interviews and bench trials (as judge and attorney) this much was clear to me.

I’ve seen it a number of times, a person is singled out for something as minor as driving a little over the speed limit, and because of the hour and/or some other so-called “indicator” of intoxication, the officer has already made up his mind that the driver is drunk. In my case, the indicator was red, bloodshot eyes. Now, bloodshot eyes at 1:00 in the morning after hours of staring at a computer screen isn’t at all surprising to me, but to an officer who has seen firsthand the horrors that can result from having actual drunk drivers on the road, any possible indicator can be enough. A lot of the time these officers err on the side of caution, not thinking of the gross violation of the driver’s rights that they are imposing.

I KNEW MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, OFFICER DIDN’T LIKE THAT

As an attorney, I’m well aware of my constitutional rights and the way that they work, so I chose to exercise mine at that time. I didn’t submit to any testing and I didn’t answer any questions (even though I hadn’t been drinking), because I know better than anyone how easily your words can be twisted, and how the Standardized Field Sobriety tests are set up in a way to almost ensure that you will fail. In fact, to the trooper’s credit, his report and testimony did accurately reflect that I had always denied having anything to drink that evening.

Even though the officer had no evidence against me, other than bloodshot eyes and what he says was an odor of an intoxicating beverage, he placed me under arrest for DWI, and the rest of my life spun out of control as a result.

MY CHARGES AND LIFE WERE BROADCAST ALL OVER THE NEWS

Aware of one of the first rules of lawyering learned in every law school — “The Attorney Who Represents Him/Herself Has A Fool For A Client ” — I hired a good DWI attorney outside of my firm, knowing that I was going to fight the bad charges against me in a trial if the charges weren’t dropped (which I had mistakenly presumed would happen). Many people choose to take a plea bargain (which I could have done and was urged to do at one point), but I knew that I could not in good conscience plead guilty to something that I did not do.

And, because really fighting a bad DWI charge in our courts takes a LOT of time (especially if you are exploring ALL of your legal options/arguments), I suffered the embarrassment of having my charges broadcast through all the local media outlets — NBC, StlToday, Suburban Journals, Patch, CBS, ABC, and more. There was even speculation as to why my trial was being postponed which added to the pressures of properly performing my duties as a Municipal Court Judge at the time.

learned first hand what it’s like to have one’s personal life exposed to the world. That type of attention sure doesn’t help any in dealing with the sinking feeling you already have when thinking about all the uncertainties that seem to come with a DWI charge.

So, now I help people KNOW their OPTIONS, worry much less, get fair outcomes and keep their driver’s license.

MY FAMILY SUFFERED, YET I DIDN’T TAKE A PLEA BARGAIN

My family suffered as well. My wife had to deal with questions and comments from her co-workers, and my kids didn’t know what to make of the things their dad was being accused of. One time a co-student found my online story and brought it to the attention of my kid during class at school 🙁

In spite of all this, I didn’t cave to the plea offers that could have brought a quicker end to all of the scrutiny — which most successful public relations professionals recommend for elected officials (remember when Mizzou Coach Gary Pinkel pled guilty in less than 24-48 hours?). Instead, I chose to pursue reelection as judge in Wentzville, unashamed and unswayed by the negative attention and mudslinging of my election opponents

A JURY FOUND ME INNOCENT IN 9 MINUTES

Six days after losing reelection as judge because of these DWI charges, the jury in my criminal trial came back after a mere 9 minutes of deliberation, declaring me innocent of the DWI charge brought against me. Even though I was found innocent of the charge, my life was changed drastically just by the accusation.

I like to believe that I have always approached my clients’ legal matters in the same way that I would if they were my brother or mother; but I know without a doubt that having personally faced a DWI charge, I have a whole new perspective on how serious a matter it really is. I never allow myself to forget that when I’m dealing with the charges my clients face.

I know first hand how badly and quickly someone wants this type of matter in their life’s rearview mirror. I hope that this website will help you feel a little more informed about the charges you are facing, and about what to look for in hiring an attorney to handle your case.

What Do Different Poop Colors Mean?

You’d probably notice if your poop is a different hue than normal. But what does it mean if it’s green? What about red, yellow, white, and black?

Most of the time, minor changes in the color of your waste are due to diet. After all, we don’t eat the same thing at every meal, every day. But sometimes a color change can signal a minor health issue. In rare cases, it means something serious is wrong in your digestive system .

If the color you see before you flush worries you, call your doctor.

    Poop Color 101

Poop is normally brown. The color is the result of what you eat and how much bile is in your stool.

Bile is a fluid your liver makes to digest fats. It starts out as a yellowish green color. But as the pigments that give bile its color travel through your digestive system. they go through chemical changes and turn brown.

    Green Poop

Most of the time, green or greenish poop is normal. Some of the things that can cause it:

    • Green veggies, like spinach or kale
    • Green food coloring, such as in drink mixes or ice pops
    • Iron supplements

If you have green diarrhea. the color of your food may not be to blame. It’s likely that your meal moved through your gut too quickly, so the fat -digesting bile didn’t have time to turn brown.

    Yellow Poop

This shade is also normal for many people. It’s common for babies, especially those who breastfeed. But if you have yellow poop that looks greasy and smells very bad, it may have too much fat. That could be a sign your body isn’t digesting food properly.

For example, if you have celiac disease. your body can’t handle a protein called gluten. which is in wheat, barley, and rye. If you have the condition and eat foods that have gluten. like many breads, pastas, and cookies, your intestines won’t work as they should.

There may be other causes of yellow poop that’s greasy and smelly. If it happens to you often, tell your doctor.

    Continued

    White or Light-Colored Poop

Medicines for diarrhea like bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate. Pepto-Bismol) can sometimes cause pale or clay-colored poop. So can barium, a chalky liquid you drink before you get X-rays of the upper part of your digestive tract.

A more serious cause is a lack of bile in your stool. (Remember, bile gives poop its brown color.) Bile is made in the liver. stored in the gallbladder. and released into your small intestine to help digest your food. If there’s not enough of it to give your poop its typical brown color, it could be the sign of a problem along the way.

Liver disease, such as hepatitis. can keep bile from getting into your body waste. So can a blockage in the tubes (called ducts) that carry bile. This can happen because of:

    Black Poop

Babies’ poop is black for the first few days after they’re born. After that, it may be because you ate something very dark-colored or took a medicine or supplement that causes black poop. But this color can be a sign of a more serious problem: bleeding in the upper part of your digestive tract.

Foods, medicines, and supplements that turn poop black include:

    • Iron supplements
    • Bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate, Pepto-Bismol)
    • Black licorice
    • Blueberries

Poop that looks like tar is often a sign of bleeding in the digestive tract. Some causes include:

If you don’t think black poop came from what you ate, you need to talk to your doctor.

    Red or Reddish Poop

If you see red or reddish poop in the toilet, don’t be alarmed right away. First ask yourself if you’ve had red foods lately. Beets, Jell-O, tomato soup. and red drinks can change the color of your stool.

If you don’t think your diet is the cause, the red you see may be blood. And if it’s bright red, the blood likely comes from the lower part of your digestive tract. Common causes include:

    • Noncancerous tumors
    • Cancer
    • Inflammation in the colon. called colitis
    • Growths called polyps in your colon
    • Conditions caused by small sacs in the wall of the colon, called diverticular disease
    • Hemorrhoids

Call your doctor if you see red that’s probably not from food you ate.
