    Life insurance policyholders may fail to inform the beneficiary(ies) of a policy’s existence. In life insurance, the beneficiary is the person or entity entitled to receive the policy proceeds upon the death of insured. Because some beneficiaries are not aware of their entitlement to the death benefit proceeds, they may fail to claim them. Insurance companies would like to distribute what is rightfully due, but they are bound to identify and pay the proper beneficiaries under the policies that they issue and they may only do so when claims are made.

    Today, consumers have several options available to them when searching for life insurance policies for deceased family members, including: searches provided by state treasurer and national unclaimed property searches; insurance company Lost Policy Finders; state insurance department Policy Locators; and private, fee-based services (for instance, MIB’s Policy Locator Service ).

    First Steps.

    Check the decedent’s personal papers and address books looking for listings of insurance agents, lawyers, estate planners, and financial advisors.

    Check safety deposit boxes for an insurance policy or related papers.

    Check with any current or former employers for group life coverage or other life insurance policies purchased through work. Check with a spouse s current or former employer to determine whether spousal coverage may apply.

    Check the decedent s bank accounts/cancelled checks for premium payments or policy loan interest payments to an insurance company.

    Review the decedent s income tax returns for any distributions from life insurance companies that have de-mutualized.

    Check the decedent s mail for at least one year following his or her passing for any premium notices, dividend notices, policy status notices and statements that are mailed generally around policy anniversaries or tax time.

    Check with any fraternal organizations, associations, professional membership groups, unions and other such entities to which the decedent belonged that may make life insurance available to their members.

    Check with the decedent s homeowner s and auto insurance agent to see if they also may have sold life insurance to the decedent.

    Careful searching may provide vital clues like company names or former states of residence which may be helpful when selecting free or paid services to continue your search. If your research turns up evidence of a life insurance policy, it is best to check directly with the insurer s claims or customer service departments. Even if a policy has lapsed, benefits may still be payable under a whole life insurance policy s non-forfeiture provision.

    Finding an Insurance Company That May Have Changed Name

    If the insurer is no longer doing business or it was acquired by another insurer, a web search may uncover the successor insurance company. If you know the state in which the insurer had its home office, you should check with the state insurance department in that state to find out information about its successor. A.M. Best’s Insurance Reports. available in the reference section of many larger libraries, provides lists updated annually of insurance company names and addresses, as well as insurers’ name changes, mergers and other changes.

    In addition to implementing a new PMP Certification test there was one other major change PMI made to the certification requirements. “Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree are required to have 4,500 hours and 36 months of unique non-overlapping project management experience leading and directing project tasks”. The key words here are leading and directing project tasks. Hour spend providing deliverables for projects do not count as part of the 4,500 hours.     For project team members, the Project Management Professional (PMP) credential remains the global gold standard in certifications. Have you considered attaining the PMP?

    Employers voice confidence in PMP credential holders. As a PMP, your responsibilities may increase and your rewards may increase as well: the PMI Project Management Salary Survey-Fourth Edition reports that on average, PMP credential holders command salaries that are 17 percent higher than their non-credentialed counterparts.

    To be eligible for the PMP credential, you will need to demonstrate that you have led and directed project tasks in these performance domains: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing the project.

    Ask yourself these questions to determine if you qualify, as a PMP candidate:

    • Do you have the authority to add, assign or remove resources on your project? Or do you have the ability to influence resources?
    • Do you make budgetary decisions? Or do you influence expenditures?
    • Do you have the authority to accept risk? Or do you influence the decision-maker in this area?

    “You don’t have to be at the table when decisions are made but you do need to know what is important to your company,” Mr. Norman said. “Be able to speak to the boss about a specific decision and speak with authority about what needs to be solved. Give your input to a decision-making session. You can do this from anywhere in the organization.”

    PMP candidates should be active, not passive in their work and must be communicators. “A leader is constantly moving forward, creating vision for what needs to happen and doing analysis and work to make your communications credible,” he added.

    In the domain of project initiation, have you helped select a project and evaluate what is needed to begin such as clear objectives, a charter and adequate support and resources?     Overview of All VA Benefits for Disabled Veterans

    Many benefits are available to veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). If you are a veteran with a disability, you should be aware of all of these benefits and their eligibility requirements.

    Basic Eligibility for VA Benefits

    There is a threshold level of eligibility that must be met for a veteran to be considered for any VA benefit. To be eligible for VA benefits, a person must have:

    • been on active service, and
    • received a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable.

    After meeting these basic requirements, specific benefits programs will have additional eligibility requirements that must be met.

    Active Military Service

    Active military service includes:

    • full-time service in the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force or Coast Guard
    • service in the Reserve or Air or Army National Guard when service is activated by the federal government, or
    • cadets at the U.S. Military, Air Force, and Coast Guard academies and midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy.

    In some cases, for some VA benefits, the following counts as active service:

    • enrollment at a preparatory school at the Military, Coast Guard or Air Force academies
    • service in certain national organizations outside the Armed Forces, and
    • engaging in training for the Armed Forces.

    Discharge Under Conditions Other than Dishonorable

    Even if a veteran meets the active military service requirement above, the VA will not consider a person a veteran for benefits purposes unless they were discharged “under conditions other than dishonorable.” Qualifying discharges include:

    • honorable discharges
    • discharges under honorable conditions, and
    • general discharges.

    Veterans discharged under other than honorable conditions, with undesirable discharges, or with bad conduct discharges may or may not be eligible for benefits, depending on the particular benefit (details are available in our articles on the specific benefit; see below for links to these articles).

    Veterans with dishonorable discharges cannot receive benefits of any kind from the VA.

    A veteran can apply for a discharge upgrade or military records correction in order to obtain a character of discharge that will qualify for benefits.

    Willful Misconduct

    Veterans who are seeking a VA benefit based on a disability whose disability was caused by their own willful misconduct will be barred from receiving benefits for that disability. However, the VA will have to prove that willful misconduct caused the disability. Willful misconduct is “an act involving conscious wrongdoing or known prohibited action.

    Types of Veterans Benefits

    The following are the various benefits that veterans with disabilities can receive.

    Service-Connected Disability Compensation

    Service-connected disability compensation is a monthly cash benefit payable to disabled veterans. Eligibility for Service-Connected Disability Compensation requires, in addition to the basic eligibility requirements described above, an illness or injury incurred during service that caused a disability or aggravated an existing disability.

    For certain severe disabilities, such as loss of vision or a limb, Special Monthly Compensation is also available.

    VA Pension

    VA Pension is a monthly cash benefit that assists disabled or retired veterans.

    Eligibility for a VA Pension requires:

    • low income and assets
    • 90 days of service, including at least one day of service during wartime, and
    • total and permanent disability (or a being deemed disabled by the Social Security Administration) or age 65 or older.

    In addition, some veterans can qualify for Housebound Benefits and Aid and Attendance (A A), improved pension programs.

    Concurrent Retirement and Disability Payments (CRDP)

    Concurrent Retirement and Disability Payments (CRDP) is a program allowing certain military retirees to receive retirement benefits and disability payments at the same time.

    Eligibility for CRDP requires a military retiree to have:

    • service of 20 or more years, and
    • a service-connected disability rated 50% or more.

    Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSP)

    Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSP) is a special program providing compensation to certain military retirees for combat-related injuries and illnesses.

    Eligibility for Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSP) generally requires military retirees to have:

    • at least 20 years of service or a medical retirement
    • combat-related service-connected disability, and
    • a disability rating that is 10% or higher.

    VA Health Care

    You do not need to have a disability caused by service or to have served in combat operations or during wartime to be able to get VA health care, though in some cases there are copays for medical treatment depending on your type of service.

    For veterans who enlisted after September 7, 1980 or entered active duty after October 16, 1981, eligibility for VA health care requires continuous service for at least two years. Veterans who were discharged for a service-connected disability or due to hardship may not have to meet this minimum service requirement. Also, veterans who served prior to September 7, 1980 do not have to meet a minimum service requirement.

    VA Nursing Home Care

    While priority for VA nursing home care is given to veterans with service-connected disabilities rated at 60% or higher, any veterans who meets the basic eligibility requirements for VA benefits can be eligible for VA nursing home care.     Other VA Benefits

    How to Get a VA Loan

    Step 1 Get Pre-Qualified

    The first step in getting a Vet Mortgage is to contact a Specialist to get pre-qualified for a home purchase using your Veterans Affairs benefit. A Specialist will be able to let you know the requirements, what price home you are pre-qualified for and issue you a Veteran Mortgage pre-approval letter.

    Step 2 – Find a Home

    Once you have been pre-qualified. the next step is to find a house. Make sure you show the realtor or seller your pre-approval letter so they know you are qualified. Veteran mortgages allow for the seller to pay for the buyer’s closing costs, up to 4% of the amount. If you are going to utilize this VA benefit, make sure that the seller-paid closing costs are specified in the home purchase contract.

    Step 3 – Full Application

    Once you have found the house you want to buy, contact your Veteran Specialist. They will need a copy of the contract for the house you are buying. From this, they can prepare your full application. They will also prepare all of the required disclosures for you to sign and provide you with a list of personal documents that will be required.

    Step 4 – Close

    After your lender has received your application and documents. they will process and underwrite your mortgage, including ordering the Veterans Affairs Appraisal. Once you have an approval, you will go to the closing where the loan documents are signed and the purchase transaction is officially completed. And then you get to move in to your new home!!

    Help desks in companies implementing telework programs will experience a higher volume of calls and requests than normal, especially during the first month following implementation.

    Without proper planning and infrastructure in place, the help desk can quickly become overwhelmed. This can lead to escalating support costs and decreased employee and help desk staff productivity, all potentially negating the cost savings realized by teleworking in the first place.


    Teleworker Help Desk Requirements

    Most teleworkers will work out of their home offices. If they do run into difficulties, these are likely to be related to connectivity issues and malfunctioning applications; especially VPN and password problems. Teleworkers IT complaints and requests are likely to be staggered throughout the day and those experiencing issues outside of normal business hours can experience loss of productivity and intense frustration. Because of this, some companies that have implemented telework programs choose to extend their help desk hours.

    A help desk supporting teleworkers should be capable of the following:
    ” Tracking and prioritizing IT issues.

    ” Remotely diagnosing, troubleshooting and resolving PC issues.

    ” Providing training on the use of company equipment and programs.

    ” Providing information on how to set up home offices for top equipment function.

    Multiple Methods to Access Ticketing System
    Existing help desks should already be tracking and prioritizing employee issues through a help desk ticketing solution. However, given their remote nature, teleworkers should have more than one means of reporting a problem. If a teleworkers computer is not functioning properly or if they are experiencing basic connectivity issues, they will not be able to access Web and e-mail based tracking systems. Therefore, it is important to have a phone access number for employees to report issues.

    Self-Help Solutions
    IT departments should offer training and self-help solutions for simple IT issues that teleworkers may encounter, especially low priority ones that the help desk may be unable to address immediately. These self-help solutions can be in the form of:
    ” Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and the answers.

    ” Teleworker training sessions and online training documents.

    ” Step by step self-help instructions for solving simple problems.

    ” Wikis where teleworkers post tips and help educate each other.

    ” Online message boards where changes and reoccurring problems are addressed by the help desk technicians.

    Implementing self-help solutions for teleworkers will reduce the volume of calls the help desk receives. By providing troubleshooting information and training on how to set up home offices, internet connections, printers, and fax machines, companies can ease teleworker frustration and decrease downtime associated with related problems. Additionally, implementing self-help solutions will lessen the need for employees to search for software workarounds on the Internet to solve their problems, potentially leading to security issues. Obviously, benefits will only be realized if teleworkers are aware of the resources available to them. It is therefore important for the help desk to provide teleworkers with a list of available resources and where they can be accessed.

    Remotely Diagnose and Resolve Problems
    Teleworkers are likely to experience most of their problems at home, where there is no on-site help. As such, one of the most important and common capabilities that IT departments have is the ability to remotely diagnose and resolve computer issues. This capability serves to accelerate repair times by eliminating the hassle of carrying the computer to the office and having the technicians speculate about the problem. Generally, in Windows environments, Microsoft’s integrated Remote Assistance tool suits this purpose. However, hosted remote desktop support services that do not rely on a VPN connection, such as Citrix GoToAssist and LogMeIn Rescue, can serve as a more versatile solution for larger distributed environments.

    Sometimes a problem cannot be resolved remotely and the malfunctioning computer must be sent to the IT department for remediation. In these cases, it is necessary for IT to have spares or loaner machines on hand that can be couriered to the teleworker to prevent teleworker downtime.

    Recommendations
    1. Provide multiple methods of contacting the help desk. This allows teleworkers to contact the help desk regardless of their IT problem.

    2. Create a self-help toolset for teleworkers. This allows teleworkers that are experiencing low priority issues to address them on their own.

    3. Offer teleworker application and office set up training. Offering teleworker training on how to set up a home office and properly configure the home internet connection and other equipment will reduce the number of preventable complaints that the help desk receives.

    4. Have the ability to remotely diagnose and resolve problems. This will help reduce teleworker frustration and downtime.


    Bottom Line

    Teleworking has specific help desk challenges that must be addressed and accounted for in the project planning stage of the program. Doing so will prevent the help desk from being inundated by teleworker support requests and help mitigate teleworker performance and frustration issues.

    Additional VA Life Insurance: Veterans’ Special Life Insurance (Korean War Program)

    The Insurance Act of 1951 established a program to meet the insurance needs of Korean War service personnel and veterans. During this period, all service members on active duty were covered by $10,000 of free insurance under a program known as Servicemen’s Indemnity .

    They remained covered under Servicemen’s Indemnity for 120 days after their discharge. Newly discharged veterans could then apply for Veterans Special Life Insurance (VSLI) which was renewable term insurance. The VSLI program was closed to new issues at the end of 1956. Effective January 1, 1959, VSLI term policies could be converted to permanent plans of insurance or exchanged for a limited convertible term policy. Today there are 181,000 policies still in force and the average age of policyholders is 75 years. Annual dividends are paid on these policies. The maximum face amount of a policy is $10,000. However, this limit does not include paid-up additional insurance which can be purchased with the annual dividends. Certain disability benefits are available under these policies for policyholders who become totally disabled before their 65 th birthday.

    Benefit corporation laws do not change or impact tax law in any way. A benefit corporation still must choose either C or S status like a traditional corporation, and are not taxed differently than other types of corporations.

    Benefit corporation status is a type of legal structure for businesses. It is not a certification, and it is available only in those states which have passed benefit corporation legislation. To become a benefit corporation, a company must incorporate as one in one of the states where it is available. Learn more about benefit corporation requirements.

    To be a Certified B Corp, a company must meet high standards of performance, transparency, and accountability as set by the non-profit B Lab, including meeting a certain score on the B Impact Assessment, which measures a company’s impact on its workers, community, and environment. Companies of any size, structure, or location may be certified as B Corporations. Benefit corporations may choose to be certified as B Corporations as well, but there is no requirement to do so.     Benefit corporations are for-profit companies that want to consider additional stakeholders in addition to making a profit for their shareholders. They are not non-profits, hybrids, or charities. Non-profits may not become benefit corporations unless they switch to a for-profit structure.

    Benefit corporations must use a freely-chosen credible, comprehensive, independent and transparent third party standard to create their benefit report, but they do not need to be certified or audited by that third party standard. Benefit corporations may choose to be certified by a third party standard as a best practice and as a means to attract capital, but there is no requirement to do so.     Any size company can incorporate or re-incorporate as a benefit corporation. Over 1,200 companies have incorporated nationally as benefit corporations, most in the last few years and all since October 2010. Some well-known benefit corporations include Patagonia, Method, Plum Organics, and King Arthur Flour.

    Benefit corporations are attractive to a large and growing market for socially responsible and impact investments. Multiple benefit corporations including Ello, Dancing Deer Baking Co. and Cotopaxi have already raised capital both from social impact investors and from more traditional funds. There is over $3.7 Trillion in socially responsible investing assets under professional management today; the benefit corporation structure reduces due diligence time for those investors to find businesses that meet their investment goals.

    NAS Advantages, Limitations Recommendations for Ethernet Storage over TCP/IP Networks

    NAS is the short form of Network Attached Storage. Of course, we are talking about Ethernet, TCP/IP Networks and the storage systems that use them to store data. In this article, we will see why the NAS over TCP/IP Networks has gained a lot of popularity and acceptance in the recent years and matured as a reliable storage technology like SAN (Storage Area Networks). We will also see some best practices and recommendations for setting up a TCP/IP network to make NAS more efficient.

    What are NAS, SAN and DAS?

    DAS Direct Attached Storage. This refers to all forms of storage used by individual computers to store data like internal hard disks, USB hard disks, CD/ DVD s, USB flash drives, etc. This is the cheapest and the most accessible form of storage available. But the storage space in DAS systems is quite limited and they are not meant for multi-user purposes.

    SAN Storage Area Network. A storage area network is a separate network that uses its own protocols (read Fiber Channel), SAN Switches, HBA adapters in each server, SAN Controllers and Disks to store data. This is primarily meant for huge enterprises and data centers where the volume of data to be stored is huge and mostly consists of transaction intensive data-bases, ERP, CRM systems etc. The SAN system stores data in blocks (rather than files) which enables a lot of storage optimization techniques to be applied more easily. Yes, they are very expensive to create and maintain.

    NAS Network Attached Storage. A NAS storage appliance is a computing device that can be attached anywhere on the network, primarily to store files. NAS connects the storage to the TCP/IP network and enables users to access storage resources using both CIFS (Microsoft based Common Internet File System) and NFS (Unix based Network File System) protocols over the familiar TCP/IP networks. The NAS appliance has its own IP address and hence can be accessed by users directly over the network to store files as well as retrieve them when required. NAS generally uses multiple disks to store data and provides file level storage and access to data.

    Advantages of Network Attached Storage (NAS, compared to SAN):

    • NAS systems stores data as files (predominantly) and support both CIFS and NFS protocols. They can be accessed easily over the commonly used TCP/IP Ethernet based networks and support multiple users connecting to it simultaneously.
    • Entry level NAS systems are quite inexpensive (and the costs keep coming down with mass adoption) they can be purchased for capacities as low as 1 or 2 TB with just two disks. This enables them to be deployed with Small and Medium Business (SMB) networks easily. However, they can scale up very well, there are NAS appliances that support multiple array of disks giving a total storage capacity in excess of 1000 TB. You can add storage by plugging a new appliance or adding disks (if possible in a particular model) to existing NAS appliance.
    • A NAS device (based on the model) may support one or more RAID levels to make sure that individual disk failures do not result in loss of data.
    • A NAS appliance comes with a GUI based web based management console and hence can be centrally accessed and administered from remote locations over the TCP/IP networks including Internet/ VPN / Leased Lines etc.
    • Some entry level NAS systems come bundled with backup software which can be very useful for backing up critical data and retrieving them when required.
    • NAS appliances are connected to the Ethernet network. Hence servers accessing them can also be connected to the Ethernet network. So, unlike SAN systems, there is no need for expensive HBA adapters or specialized switches for storage or specialized skills required to set up and maintain the NAS systems. With NAS, its simple and easy.
    • Ethernet networks are scaling up to support higher throughputs Currently 1 GE and 10GE throughputs are possible and very soon 40 GE and 100 GE throughputs would be supported through a single link. NAS systems are also capable of supporting such high throughputs as they use the Ethernet based networks and TCP/IP protocol to transport data. Also, the interoperability of various vendor devices on the TCP/IP network is already proven.
    • The management tools required to manage the Ethernet network are well established and hence no separate training is required for setting up and maintaining a separate network for storage unlike SAN systems.
    • Storage Network convergence is happening all around the world and the convergence is happening over, no wonder, the IP Network! Standards like iSCSI, FCoE etc enable SAN and NAS to coexist on the same IP network, protecting existing SAN investments. Advancements in the TCP/IP networks like Lossless Network standard and Pausing transmission from individual devices to avoid congestion etc, would make TCP/IP network as reliable as Fiber Channel network in the near future.

    Dis-advantages of Network Attached Storage (NAS, compared to SAN):

    • Transaction intensive databases, ERP, CRM systems and such high performance oriented data are better off when stored in SAN (Storage Area Network) than NAS as the former creates a network that has low latencies, reliable, lossless and faster.Also, for large, heterogeneous block data transfers SAN might be more appropriate.
    • At the end of the day, NAS appliances are going to share the network with their computing counterparts and hence the NAS solution consumes more bandwidth from the TCP/IP network. Also, the performance of the remotely hosted NAS will depend upon the amount of bandwidth available for Wide Area Networks and again the bandwidth is shared with computing devices. So, WAN optimization needs to be performed for deploying NAS solutions remotely in limited bandwidth scenarios.
    • Ethernet is a lossy environment, which means packet drops and network congestion are inevitable. So, the performance and architecture of the IP networks are very important for effective high volume NAS solution implementation at least till the lossless Ethernet framework is implemented.
    • For techniques like Continuous Data Protection. taking frequent Disk Snapshots for backup etc, block level storage with techniques like Data De-duplication as available with SAN might be more efficient than NAS.
    • Sometimes, the IP network might get congested if operations like huge data back up is done during business hours. That is not the case with SAN systems as it creates a separate network for storage and hence backup/restore operations can be done at any time of the day without affecting the normal functioning of the IP network.

    Network Recommendations and Best Practices for Ethernet Storage over TCP/IP Networks:

    • Use Manageable Switches throughout the network This is important for a lot of reasons, click on the link to know more. And besides, the price difference between unmanaged and managed switches is coming down fast.
    • The Network architecture should adhere to some type of established topology Star (preferred), Extended Star or Ring. Try not to connect switches arbitrarily throughout the network as trouble shooting such a network would become very tough.
    • Use a Network Management System or tools like Cacti / sFlow/ Netflow etc, to have a complete view of the performance/ congestion in the network.
    • Implement VLAN s throughout the network to logically segment the network according to the various departments/ functions etc, for both restricting the broadcast domain as well as restricting the network access.
    • In large networks, use VLAN trunking where ever necessary to allow multiple VLAN s to travel over a single high speed link (10 GE link, for example).
    • Also use Link Aggregation techniques to combine multiple links to form a single high speed logical link and use Spanning Tree Protocol (Or RSTP) to avoid loops in the network (which might cause congestion) as well as provide redundant paths to compensate for cable cuts or link failures.
    • Use Jumbo Frames (9000 byte payload) instead of the normal Ethernet Frame (1500 byte payload) where ever possible to communicate with the storage device This method reduces the number of packets that need to be processed resulting in higher efficiency and higher effective throughput.
    • Configure priority groups using IEEE 802.1q, thereby creating end to end QoS settings for various forms of traffic (including storage) traversing through the network. This would give more control over parameters like latency and bandwidth reservation which is necessary for high performance storage networks.

    Child Tax Credit is changing THIS WEEK and this is what you need to know

    New rules on Child Tax Credit – which will affect hundreds of thousands of parents across the UK – are set to come into force today (Thursday April 6).

    The Tories may have promised to stop their attacks on the welfare state, but there remain a number of measures still to take effect that were announced by former Chancellor George Osborne before he was sacked.

    And those coming in this week could prove more painful for families across the country than any others since the Conservatives launched their austerity campaign back in 2010.

    The changes will hit lowest-income families the hardest.

    They have taken two years to come into force since being announced by Osborne.

    It is estimated the cuts will affect 515,000 families by 2020.

    The Tax Credits two-child limit

    Child Tax Credit is paid by the Government to low income families to help parents with the costs of bringing up a child.

    Couples make a joint claim, and if you’re a single parent, the resident parent is usually the one to make the claim.

    The amount of money parents are entitled to depends on factors including income and other circumstances. You do not need to be working to claim Child Tax Credit.

    Those responsible for children receive money for each child which qualifies. However the amount of children it helps per family is set to change.

    Child Tax Credit – which is worth up to 2,780 per child per year – will only be paid for the first two children in any family.

    Historically there has not been a limit on how many children a parent can claim for.

    If your children were born before to this date, credits for three or more children will still be applicable.

    However, if you have a third child on or after April 6 2017, you won’t get any more money for the extra child.

    It is controversial because it will deny huge sums of money to large families in future.

    The Government is also removing the family element – a payment of 545 for a newborn first child. Parents of children born before Thursday will still get this.

    When is it coming in?

    This arrives today, Thursday (April 6) 2017.

    The Government are aiming to find 1.2bn by 2020 with this cutback.

    Child Tax Credit, worth up to 2,780 per child per year, will now only be paid for the first two children in any family.

    This will deny huge sums to large families in future, and women who had a third child through rape will have to prove their ordeal to get a special exception.

    Who will be affected?

    Lower-income families on Child Tax Credit (CTC) with more than two children where the third (or later) child is born after April 6 2017.

    The same group of people where the family has stopped claiming CTC for six months or more, then returns to it.

    • Children already alive, if their parents keep claiming without a long break
    • Children born through rape, but mum must prove it
    • Twins or triplets born to families who had one child
    • Children looked after by a ‘friend or family carer’
    • Children who have been adopted (except by step-parents)
    • Disabled children, who are counted separately

    Four other Tory benefit cuts are set to hit families across the UK – these include:

    1. 30-a-week disability benefit cuts

    When is it coming in?

    This one comes in from today

    Nationally this will cutback on 350m by the end of this Parliament in 2020

    From today, people claiming the disability benefit called Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) will be getting 29.05 less each week if they are deemed fit for Work Related Activity (WRAG).

    This means instead of 102.15 per week, this particular group of people will now recieve 73.10 per week – which is the same as jobseekers’ allowance.

    People who begin claiming ESA WRAG after today (April 3 2017)

    People who stop claiming ESA for 12 weeks or more, then return to it

    Current claimants, as long as they keep claiming without a break of 12 weeks or more.

    ESA claimants in the more serious Support Group.

    People who already recieve ESA who are moved from the Support Group to the WRAG group.

    2. Young people and housing benefit

    When is it coming in?

    It already has – on April 1.

    This one is aimed at saving 105m by 2020.

    Jobseekers aged 18 to 21 will no longer be able to get Housing Benefit, worth varying amounts and always paid directly to the landlord. It is supposedly to stop them going into a “life on benefits”.

    Charities have warned this could force thousands of young people onto the streets.

    Who will be affected?

    People aged 18 to 21 on jobseekers’ allowance who are eligible for Housing Benefit.

    • Current claimants
    • Young people earning at least 89.60 a week or apprentices
    • Young people who have their own children to care for
    • Young people in temporary accommodation for the homeless
    • Young people subject to / threatened with domestic violence
    • Orphans and care leavers
    • Youngsters on some disability benefits (the ‘daily living’ part of PIP)
    • Youngsters whose parents live abroad
    • Youngsters where it’s ‘inappropriate’ to return to their parents’ home (but charities warn this will be hard to prove)

    3. The Family element

    When is it coming in?

    This one arrives on Thursday (April 6).

    It is aimed at saving 540m by 2020.

    An extra payment in Child Tax Credit called the “family element”, worth 545 a year, is being shut down.

    This will deprive a many new claimants of a big payment, yet keep handing it to people who are already on the system.

    Lower-income families who claim Child Tax Credit entirely for children born after April 6 2017.

    Families who claim Child Tax Credit for any child born before April 6 2017.

    4. Changes for people who have been widowed

    When is it coming in?

    Thursday April 6.

    100million a year in the long term

    Three different benefits are being replaced with one new Bereavement Support Payment. It’s worth 3,500, plus 350 a month for 18 months, for claimants with dependent children ( 2,500 plus 100 a month for other claimants).

    While this will work out better for some – charities have warned the payments period is too short and widowed people are often in need of money for longer.

    Anyone who can claim bereavement benefits.

    This means people whose spouse or civil partner dies after April 6 2017, but the surviving partner must be under the state pension age and the deceased must have paid sufficient National Insurance.

    People already receiving bereavement benefits or whose spouse/civil partner died before April 6 2017.
